I work for home and I need a new office chair. A combination of my large butt sitting for many hours a day, and cats loving to be near me, have destroyed my current chair. It looks like gaming chairs are a little less expensive than office counterparts. From some light research it seems gaming chairs don't present as professional appearance in online meetings. I'm too old and independent to care about that. Any reason not to get a good gaming chair?

Office chair, ergonomics are much better

Bought my steelcase leap v2 off ebay and it looked new.

Herman miller is also a top choice

Look for deals on slickdeals.net

Yes. Here it is:
(I am) sitting for many hours a day...
If you spend that many hours in a chair, it is like your shoes or your bed - not something to skimp on. If you can find a bargain on a good chair that's great, but a "bargain chair" is probably not, really.

My WFH set up costs less than just one very costly X Chair.
I got an adjustable height base on Amazon for about $200. Poplar blanks for custom top that is 26"X72".
My chair is the tallest drafting stool the Staples has. $130.
I can easily switch between sitting and standing without changing the desk height. My "monitor" is a 43" 4K tv mounted on the wall.

I bought some leather Herman Miller office chairs about 30 years ago - they still feel and look as good as ever. I I still use them every day and they are excellent. Buy once, cry once, be happy for the rest of your life.

Might be able to find some good stuff at an office furniture liquidator. A lot of businesses finally accepted that in person isn't required to function and got rid of a bunch of stuff.

Years ago when Herman Miller came out with the Aeron, a very large client company bought them for its headquarters. When I was meeting with a corporate EVP, she called her assistant into her office to adjust her chair. Later, the EVP told me she regretted skipping the 'mandatory' class on operating the chair. 🤣

This is NO JOKE. Those things have more knobs and levers than my HF radio.

OP, I've worked in places where I've held down chairs for 12+ hours a day. Used HM Aerons and now stuck with "pretty looking" gaming chairs. Buy a chair designed for long term use, your back will thank you.

What is your budget?

Unlimited = best “gaming” chair on the market.

More Realistic “gaming” chair

Ok, I am not exactly an “expert” on chairs, but I can tell you that it is extremely rare to find a “good” computer chair, of any kind under $100, you can find very, very good chairs between $100 & $200 but you really need to do your homework and steer clear of Chinese knock off clones of really good products that share similar names to actual good products, I am by no means suggesting that price reflects quality and/or comfort, but the higher you go above $200 the easier it gets to weed out the junk, simply because only 10% of the worlds population would ever consider spending that kind of money on a freaking computer chair, I’ve seemed to always have good luck by researching the Ridiculously priced stuff first, and then following the manufacturers products down to the lower tier of products, I guarantee you that if you Google a chair that’s say $300, you’ll find comments in the reviews that say “you’re crazy if you spend XXX on that chair, when you can get “this” for 2/3 the price”, you shouldn’t have any issue finding something of quality within the budget you have in mind, yeah it seems like a lot of work, but I’ve absolutely managed to have and use very, very good computer related “gear” over the years, but then again, I have zero qualms about using Hot Pink, Lime Green and Galactic lavender mousepad, I’m all about function over form haha.

Definitely get office chair.

Gaming chairs are just for the looks they're not as comfortable as A Good Office Chair

Maybe get your cats some scratch Towers?

my wife uses a gaming chair as an office chair. Its perfect for her back/lumbar support. Yes a good gaming chair is as good as an office chair (they just tend to have that "race" look). Her bosses nor her team have ever made a comment on the "looks". You just need to get a reputable brand, not some chinese knockoff. There's a reason professional gamers use those chairs. They sit in them for 8-12+ hours a day.

She uses a Secret Lab and would recommend it to anyone.

If you don’t have one of these you don’t have a hair on your ass.

That fact that gaming chairs exist show how far we’ve fallen as species.

I'm sure that the sharecroppers of the past probably looked at guys sitting on tractor seats instead of walking behind a mule and said the same thing. I'm probably much closer to a luddite than many on here twice my age, but I believe as robotics and technology advances, there will be more free time, and people will consume more and more entertainment (part of me wonders how people can stand it, but clearly they do) . Someone is going to need to "go to work" to provide that entertainment. These guys and girls in the gaming chairs making a living in the past ten years or so will probably one day be considered pioneers of the new entertainment industry. It's sad that is where we are heading, but be sure, that's where this train is taking us.

I am guess most people in gaming chairs are not making a living. This isn’t so e specialized piece of lab equipment for scientists and engineers. Although I’m sure some of them take advantage of it.

I agree that most with them are not making a living with it, similar to the tractor analogy. What I find more sad and detrimental than gaming chairs existing is the percentage of the population who work in jobs so sedentary that they need special office style chairs for the number of hours spent sitting. This is the way of the world, but I don't believe it's how we were designed to live unfortunately.
