I've been looking to get an RDS for my PPS .40 (gen 1) and was hoping maybe someone has one they have put one on.

I'm trying to avoid cutting the slide and use a mounting plate that would slide in the rear sight dovetail.

I'd appreciate any recommendations on a good mounting plate or a good RDS that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars.

I'm not opposed to "knock offs" but haven't bought any as I'm worried they will break after actual use.

Thanks!

Don't buy a Sig Romeo1.
I have one on a 320RX and while it works ok, it's just ok. For the dollars spent I'd suggest getting a Holosun if trying to keep costs down.

I was looking at the Holosuns actually good to know they are alright. I was looking at the HS407K .

I don't think I would get the SIG but what don't you like about it? not clear?

Battery compartment is on top, which seems nice...but the slot to remove the cover is cheap chinesium metal and deforms. You need to get the cover tight to confirm positive uninterrupted power when shooting, but then when it's time to change it the slot strips a bit. Over time it's going to be a problem. Battery life is inconsistent. I've had one last a few months. One about a year. One a few weeks. Knowing age of battery is difficult so I don't know what to condemn, but I've never had a battery issue with Aimpoints, Trijicons, or Primary Arms dots....

Wow. Well those are some serious issues especially for that brand and price tag. See it's things like this that have kept me back from really spending money on firearm electronics. nothing is as they claim.

I was thinking of trying out this mounting system:

Is this for fun at the range, or a edc type deal?
The mounts all put the dot up high. Milled is the best way to go. As far as rds, if you want to buy and not worry, get a Trijicon RMR and be done. Buy once, cry once. If not, the only other I would consider is a Holosun. I've had 4 different RMR's, and all run like a champ, and have very long battery life.

If you want the best MRD, then go with an Trijicon RMR, next go with a holosun. They are a very close 2nd and something I would feel comfortable using for carry or duty. As for the mounting plates, I would get a cheap one just to play around with to see if you like the red dot and if you do, then get the slide milled (if that’s even possible with a Walter, pretty thing slide so I’m not sure...) the sight mounting plates are going to sit ridiculously high on the slide.

Thanks for the advice, I like that.... buy once, cry once lol! They are quite expensive but I guess you get what you pay for.

I'm wanting one for edc and home defense.

But glad you're letting me know about how high it'll sit on this platform. I was worried about that. That'll be annoying for edc for holstering.

I've seen some super low profile set ups that are really nice, just not with a pps. lol.

Sitting high also has problems related to muscle memory. If you're trained to draw and aquire your old sights you will find yourself bobbling around looking for a dot. That could be the death of you.
You need to retrain yourself to draw and present an optic mounted pistol.

I've never shot with optics other than scopes on rifles, so I'll have to spend a decent amount of time retraining.

Hopefully not too long. I was also thinking about it and with the rds sitting high like that I probably won't be able to see the pistol at all in my sight picture, this may bother me too. Making lean toward getting the slide milled.

and I guess if I don't like it I can just buy a replacement slide.

Might be worth waiting for the newest gen Holosun. The 2020 407k/507k models have a side opening battery compartment so you won't have to rezero the thing every time you change the battery. Plus they're metal/glass and waterproof and they've got a rear sight built in for a backup. Here's a vid on it from SHOT. It's a modified RMSc mount so it'll need some minor modification if you already have RMSc milling. Need to remove the rear index lugs and shorten the front ones.

The good news is that you can just practice the draw at home with snapcaps/dummies. Doesn't have to cost a thing except time.

all of the Holosun MRDS’s have a side opening battery compartment. I have had a 407K on order since Jan, looks like they pushed delivery now to May.

yessir good idea! I got dummy rounds last year and have used them to practice my trigger pull. I should get the laser cartridges though for practicing draw, aim and fire with the new optics.

Did you order from Kenzie's Optics?

I like the back up rear sight. That is crucial.

I don't think you'll see the dot from the laser cartridge. And I don't know if it's more helpful or harmful overall even with old school sights. You should be focused on the front sight, not the target looking for "impacts." Working with someone to spot for you I think is a better idea if using a tool like that.
and it's putting the cart before the horse right now. You first need to learn to present the pistol at the proper height to get the red dot in line with your eye so you are looking for it. The dot just needs to be there in that spot.

Understood that makes a lot of sense.

I carry a gen 1 PPS as well, it's been my EDC for several years. I would have never thought a RDS would fit well on such a thin slide, I thought they were for full size pistols. I just measured the top of the slide and it is just shy of 3/4", with rounded sides. The Romeo 1 is 1.3", and the HS407k is 1.6" wide. Please excuse the EDC/holster dust :).

Just noticed that the camera was off to the left a little, but you get the idea.

I'm not up to date on this, but I believe there's models now made for single stacks that might be a good fit

For some reason my brain stopped reading after “Walther” and I just assumed it was a full size......

for the PPS, absolutely get it milled for a holosun 407/507K.

When I checked the HS407 was listed as 1.6" wide, that's twice as wide as the slide. Can't find width for the 507.

Length: 0.95 in
Width: 1.6 in
Height: 0.98 in
Weight: 1 oz

I’m thinking you’re not looking at the “K” model?

I totally forgot about the Shield RMSc red dot. It's .91 wide, which could help a bunch with that slim slide.

I love it....super slim and the accuracy from such a small pistol amazes me every time I shoot it. There are some RDS's that can fit on thinner guns though it's slim pickings.

However I think I know why you got confused. At opticsplanet.com they have the "k" listed at 1.6 inches wide in the specs. they made an error.

Thanks everyone for the input so far. Much appreciated.

Sucks they are on back order right now but good things come to those who wait right lol!
