So...my wife and I were sitting around the house this afternoon and hear a voice. Seems Amazon sent an automatic update to her Kindle Fire HD7 (4th generation) and the update includes Alexa embedded in the operating system. We are both more than a bit freaked out that this damn thing is listening, recording, and transmitting every word we say. It even wanted to save our wifi password to Amazon's server.
A couple of hours of research showed that Amazon has turned a deaf ear to all the complaints that they've gotten since November 2016. That research also shows there isn't much way to turn it off (you can, but it comes back on).
Question for the hive mind: anyone know how to permanently remove Alexa from an Amazon Kindle? Or, alternatively, root an Android device? I dug around the net trying to learn about rooting, but got enough of that frustration pretty quickly.
We've physically turned the device off, but these days...who knows...Alexa may be able to turn it back on. I'm looking for a way to save her Kindle (it was a gift from our daughter-in-law) and don't want to have to resort to bashing it with a sledgehammer.
Anyone have any good ideas on how to exorcise this demon?
