If you were going to buy some new 6.5 CM brass what would it be? I’m looking at buy a couple hundred rounds of virgin brass. Didn’t know if Peterson or Alpha was much of an upgrade over hornady brass.

Lapua in the top end. But I don't know that it always justifies the added cost. Several considerations in that debate/topic imo.

Hornady, Peterson, Alpha, Norma, Starline in the second tier. Pick one you like, and go.

I've been using Hornday and Norma in both 6mm and 6.5CM for the last 8ish or so firings and am still quite happy with both.

I’ve used lapua, Peterson, starline and Hornady.

Lapua/alpha/Peterson if cost is not a concern. For the money, the starline has worked really well. I think Peterson will be the next batch I go with after this. If you’re shooting matches, losing brass is a bummer. Losing lapua brass makes you sick.

I was using Hornady and it seems that after 4 or 5 firings I found minor splits and lose primer pockets in 5-10% of the brass. I'm running a low load (under 2800 fps). As the Hornady brass wears out I'm replacing it with Starline, which seems to be below Lapua in quality but makes it up in price.

I haven't tried Peterson brass.

Thanks for the relies. I think I will pick up a couple hundred Starline to give a shot. Now do I want SRP or LRP? lol there's always a decision to be made.

One of my shooting buddies runs SRP and I use LRP and we are always running neck and neck. The same with the 6mm Creeds too. So far not enough difference in group size. Usually it's the load, bullet and Wednesdays. I can't shoot worth a damn on Wednesdays. Since I load for half a dozen calibers I use the same primers (CCI or Federal) in all my rifles.

It also depends on what you are doing. If at the range where you can pick up you brass I use lapua. If it was a match where it’s going to be left on the ground I would use cheaper stuff. Just something to think about.

Matches don’t let you pick your brass up? That sucks.

some do, but it may not be your brass. And if you are running a stage and going from here to there may not be enough time to stop and pick it up. I guess depending on the course of fire set up

USPSA, Run and Gun, 3 Gun, etc. it's hard to shag your own.
NRL, PRS, NSC, F Class, etc. you pick up everything.

I've always picked up my own simply because I reload. And like other said, Lapua is fvcking expensive! I don't hate money.

Has anybody tried, or had luck with, one of the gun mounted brass catchers? Or do they just get in the way during the competition?

I have been using Starline small-primer Creedmoor brass. Groups with the small primer were smaller than the groups with the large primer and Starline brass was consistent and reasonable cost. I used Remington small rifle match primers and Federal Large Rifle Match primers.

They work to some degree.....it just depends if you can make it fit securely on your rifle. The picitanny rail models work great.....if you have enough room.....sometimes a scope wont leave enough clearance to mount it. The other models have some type of hook and velcro system that works ok, but depending on the fit to the rifle, they can work loose in a few rounds.

Never used one in competition, but i could see it being an issue if it worked loose.

I have both, and that has been my experience. The pic-rail mounted version has a better cage for the net, that holds its shape. The velcro strap version will slide around some. I always use it at the range so I don't have to chase my brass.

I have the one that mounts on the rail and covers that ejection port. Bought a could extra mounts and have them on 4 or 5 different ARs, same catcher. The Used to use the came net but it used Velcro around the upper and had nothing but trouble with it.
