Starting in August 2019 Foothills Defensive Shooters will be participating in a new venue, Southern Defensive Pistol League. My feeling about the sport that gave us our start here is that it is turning into something that is trying to be all for everyone. The defensive part has gone, the rules are always changing and it is just not fun to try to keep up anymore. With that being said a new set of rules have been drafted that tries to bring the defensive shooting sport many of us grew to love back. These rules are what we will be using at Foothills Defensive Shooters for pistol matches. They are at this time not finalized but are far enough along to get us started. Please take the time to read them and come shoot with us soon.

I've not enjoyed the new idpa rule structure for awhile now, so I'm going to give this a try tomorrow .
If you've nothing to do tommorow come out and give it a try.
I know this is late notice but I only found out about it Wednesday, and I've been a little busy

So S4f, did you get a chance to shoot the SDPL match?
We have run three of them so far with good comments from the shooters.

I was planning to be there on the 5th but life got in the way. Definitely have it marked on the calendar for Nov 2nd.

We've been hearing about changes comming. Since I've not shot there since the spring I'm sure any change will be noticed.

Great day at the southern defensive pistol league in Wilkes today,
Last match of the year, this is a great format that has put the fun back in shooting for me, come out and try it next year. This format emanated from the mind of one of our members @Ian McFinn and he's done a great job

Cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon!

The 2nd stage (1st bay) was fun. A lot of people missed the target to the far right through the 'window' or double shot the one exposed at the start & window.

The "stop sign" steel on the far right also managed to go quite a few rounds unscathed.

The match was lot of fun and incorporated a little bit of everything!

That one at 30yds was originally the smallest steel (4"?). We swapped it with the stop sign (6x8?) while setting up.

Bay 5 distance got me. 30yds with a 3" CC, not good, need to practice distance. I got them all but it took 3 each, including the non-threat, twice :(.

I liked all the steel in stage two.
Made too many mental mistakes but my accuracy was good.just have to shoot more next year.
My cousin finished first in accuracy for this match. He's the gentleman shooting in the above picture.

Saturday was a good way to end the year at Foothills Defensive Shooters. Thanks to the folks that came out with us all year long. Thanks for helping take down stages at the end of the day as well. It is appreciated so much.

We started the new format, Southern Defensive Pistol League, in August and people are telling me it is a lot of fun to shoot. Stages are meant to be fun but also test you. We try to keep things revolver neutral. Remember how to use cover without a stick on the ground when you come shoot. If you are shooting in Stock Pistol and your mag holds 17 rounds that’s what you load them with. Just like you would in the real world.

We will be looking over the rules during the winter and doing a few updates. So if you have any input weather you have shot a match with us or just read the rules please send it my way. You can find the rules at FoothillsIDPA.com at this time. They are in the link at the upper right of the page. After this review and update I expect the rules to not change for a while.

Thanks again for all that come shoot with us. I will be checking the forum and hope the see people in March.

So, it is that time of year again. Everyone has been running that reloader during the winter, practicing as well and tuning up for the start of the match year. It's here folks and Foothills Defensive Shooters in Wilkesboro NC will be holding our first match of the year on Saturday March 7th at Duncan's outdoor range.

The match will be using the Southern Defensive Pistol League rules for the entire year. SDPL now has a real web page thanks to our person that knows how to do that kind of stuff. Check it out at Southerndefensivepistolleague.com . SDPL rules can be found on the web page as well as directions to the range.

If you shot IDPA back in the late 1990's to early 2000's you will know what to do at this match. We don't use a stick on the ground to tell you how to stay behind cover, we load those high cap mags to full like in real life, the rest of the rules are pretty simple as well. Take 30 minutes to read them, come out on Saturday and have fun with us. Shooters brief at 10am, shooting starts shortly after that.....

Thanks for the heads up.
I'm looking forward to the new season and hope more of the forum members here find time to join us .

Looking forward to it. Had so much fun with the J-frame last year that I am bringing a proper K-frame out.

Is there any help needed with set-up?

We setup on Friday usually after 12 noon. Help is always welcome either then or early on Saturday getting the stages finalized before the match. If you come out Friday call me if the gate is locked. You can get my contact info from the SDPL web page.

I’m in the office all day Friday, but I’ll pick up my buddy early Saturday morning and we’ll head out y’all’s way.

I will have TacLoad Brass Exchange available at this match. This is an exchange service for those reloaders that absolutely hate cleaning brass. I deprime, resize, stainless steel pin wet tumble and dry the brass. Bag it in 500 piece vacuum sealed lots. You bring me 500 pieces of your sorted, dirty range brass and exchange it along with $20 for my ready to load brass of the same caliber.
I take cash or cards. No small children or farm animals please.

Thanks for setting up a great match and opening up a bit of a sounding board regarding the rulebook. My buddy really enjoyed his first match.

There was a really nice variety of target presentations and plenty of tight shots around barrels and no-shoots, and the whole match moved along at a nice pace.

Thanks to @Ian McFinn for putting on a great match today.
6 stages, a couple that were speed based a few that made you have to think, but added together they made for a fun day.
Got to meet @JRV in passing. We weren't squaded together. But it's always fun to run into other forum members
If you missed it this month join us next month and try the new format .

Hello all. Just wanted to let everyone know that the match in Wilks at Foothills Defensive Shooters for April 4th is cancelled. I have done this with the shooters and match staff in mind. Please check the web page Southerndefensivepistolleague.com for details and updates. I hope everyone will stay safe, be smart and practice as much at home as you can. I will be posting information about the May match as early as possible on the above page and here as well.

Be safe,
RN

Just received a second had email that the sdpl shoot will be an on the sixes match, which means it will be revolver friendly,
I will be running a revolver for the first time in competition, so come out and shoot ,
just watching me trying to run a revolver should be worth the price of admission

As a revolver shooter, that sounds like a great format.

As someone that will be on the other side of the State that weekend for a birthday, darn.

Hey all. It’s almost Halloween and that means November is close at hand. With that in mind please be sure to get out and vote. You are the only one that can cast your vote and every vote matters even more this year.

The other reason I am on the page is to let everyone know that on November 7th Foothills Defensive Shooters will be having it’s last match of the year in Wilksboro at Duncan Gun Shops outdoor range. We are still doing the Southern Defensive Pistol format and having a great time. For information on rules and directions please visit southerndefensivepistolleague.com. Registration will open at 9 and shooters brief is at 10.
