How can UPS deliver a box to my door and my Ring video/motion-sensing doorbell not see it?

I installed Ring last week. I go in and out of my front door throughout the day, and Ring sees it and records it every time. I had a package delivered to my front door at about 4PM. I guess I was in the kitchen or something and didn’t hear it. I sit at my computer 10 minutes later and see the notification email from both UPS and Home Depot. I walk outside, pick up a fairly good sized package bring it in, and Ring records me like all the other times I went in and out of the house earlier. But it has no history of the delivery maybe twenty minutes earlier.

How would Ring miss a UPS driver and package at my door? It appears no where in “history”, even though it has recorded events after that delivery.

Is @Lil D working for UPS?

I don't have a ring camera. But I have other cameras. Mine all have sensitivity settings related to object size and zone within the image to adjust to maximize useful images and minimize images of birds and spiders and such. Does your ring camera have similar adjustments? Difference between walking all the way in the door and sliding a package toward it from halfway up the steps?

The box was sitting neatly right on my door mat right in front of the door. I walked outside just now and walked up to my front porch steps as if I was going to toss the box 3-4 feet onto the door mat (which i don’t think happened because it was standing neatly on its end just like it was placed there squarely on the mat) The camera still sensed me walking up to the step. But I wasn’t moving fast.

He was probably moving fast. I guess I need to dial up the sensitivity.

I'd bet your wifi burped. I was having issues with connectivity a few months back and decided to upgrade to a MESH router system. Problem solved. When that was going on the Ring would miss stuff.

My router uses MESH tech and is maybe two months old. So I don’t think that’s it.

I just dialed up the sensitivity, and frequency of motion alerts.

This^^... Motion based recording, especially with an PIR, is all about sensitivity & light/heat reflection for trigger.

It also depends on the “pre trigger” settings as well, if the camera will save 5-15 secs previous, or if it saves/records immediately once activated. Lost count over the years, when I was a alarm/cctv service tech, of the times I’ve had to explain & demo to folks why their motion detector didn’t go off, either on the alarm system or on a camera.

Yeah I doubt it was an WiFi issue- unless Ring has changed their system from when I was installing them, no WiFi would’ve meant no notification at all..

He didn't get a notification from Ring. He got emails form the places he ordered from and the shipper.

Should be able to check the history of the day. the Ring camera take a snapshot every 15 seconds or so. Give that a review and see if the Truck can be seen. Pay attention to time codes so you can spot a gap if there is one. A gap means no power or no wifi

It was a box of a dozen 14x20 air filters. I don’t think he threw it, and I don’t think it was by drone. I think he was moving fast and the system altogether missed him. I’ve dialed up everything, sensitivity, frequency, etc. I have it hardwired to the low voltage door bell connection, so battery life should be moot.

The guy must have been dressed in stealth brown....It worked too!

He probably threw it from the truck.
You're probably right...lol... or dropped it straight from the plane. Most of my packages look like they have been...

Well, Ring is a Bezos product. Maybe I should dump it and buy from someone else, in keeping with my recent Amazon boycott.
I’m going on 48 hours now.

Air dropped from a drone.

Mine will do that too. It’ll somehow miss the delivery guy every now and then but notify me the trash truck is stopped in front of the house 60’ from the camera.
Same here!

maybe internet issues when it was delivered ?

No joke thats what mine did. same situation. box there, no motion detect. mine records low res 24x7 and review showed a 20 ft toss to my front door.

If you are still on the 30 day trial, good luck on it working at all. Ours did that, then we went paid and EVERYTHING sets it off.

I bought it already. No trial.

I’ll see how it works with new settings. I didn't really want the danged thing to begin with, but we had a neighborhood break in, so like any good politician, I needed to do something. Wife doesn’t like it. I had to take the app off her phone.

4pm, so it wasn't dark yet...
I'd guess your delivery person is a vampire wearing sunblock
DO NOT invite them into the house to deliver large packages.

In a more serious issue... did everybody take a good look at their assorted control panels and what not? My alarm panel had a tiny camera built to face out from the screen.
The panel controls have no way to access it or review who has been doing what in front of it, so I'm forced to conclude that somebody out there is watching me and doesn't want me to know what they see
It's covered with a piece of tape now.

I don’t have an alarm panel. Which system are you talking about?

I’ve got a bunch of ring cameras and doorbell and have worked through many of the kinks.

is your doorbell hardwired to your old doorbell low voltage power or is it battery powered?

when you go to the ring app and look at the device health tile, what does it say under network strength?

did you set up the motion zones wide enough for your whole porch?

edit, it’s night so not very good picture in the dark with no lights on, but you get the idea on the zone I have setup

Wired to old doorbell low voltage. Battery is 99%. Device health report says "clean bill of health". connection is 185 down, 10 up. Motion zones have been set and are working, and I turned up the sensitivity after today’s fail.

Put ten boxes of 9mm ammo out, and I'll approach from the side of your stoop. We'll see if I can pick them up without being detected. If so, they're mine. If not, I'll put them back.

Slow as you move, the Ring will see you, and Fuquay police will be here in time to clean up the mess before you know what happened.
