Long Range Bolt Gun

[ . . . ]

I also plan to try some other brands as well as soon as I come across them being sold in single boxes. I don't want to pay $65+ for a brick that my gun doesn't like.

What I have done is waited until Sportsman's Guide runs a free shipping code, then ordered a bunch of different types of ammo in 'single' boxes. They have a decent selection, with much more diversity than what I can find locally. For whatever reason, my rifle shoots best with the GECO Bolt Action Optimized and the Wolf Match.

Good idea. I have heard good things about the Wolf Match and SK Standard. Just haven't been able to find any locally.

It may seem hard to believe but use a Jones Gauge to measure rim thickness and sort it by thickness will shrink groups even more. Some people buy cases of rimfire to keep the same lot/run number and sort by rim thickness in said lots because that .01" difference does make a difference sometimes.

Interesting

I want to make one of those tables. Been eyeing them and different versions but haven't gotten around to it. How stable is that version with the fold leg kit?

I can see some troubles happening on uneven terrain. It's pretty nice on that concrete and our asphalt driveway though! :) I'll get it off road tomorrow and see how it does. I need to just bite the bullet and build something more substantial mounted to a pallet. Just tote the pallet around with the tractor when I need to.

Definitely interested. What kind of gear is needed in addition to the rifle? Which division would be best suited for the beginner? Is it possible to shoot the match twice in separate divisions?

First, read the web page, including the rules page linked from there. Complete firearm and other equipment guidelines are on the rules page, and yes, you may register twice in different divisions. Note that shooting once takes 2 20 minute time slots on range 1 (current location which is limited to 100 yards), and 3 when range 0 is open again and we have stages at 50, 100, and 150 yards, so don't sign up for consecutive start times.

Basic equipment needed is a rifle with scope zeroed at 50 with dope for 100, a front bag or bipod, 50 rounds of standard velocity (under 1100 fps) 22LR ammo per division, and mags to hold ~25 rounds (20 for record and ~5 sighters per stage). At 100+ yards you may also use a rear bag.

Sporter vs. target division depends on your equipment, and tactical adds the challenge of non-bench shooting positions that change each match. There are beginner and very good shooters in all the divisions.

Email [email protected] to get on the email list for announcements.

Still can't manage to get the CZ to shoot like the FV-SR but it's getting closer. Just seems to be somewhat inconsistent compared to the Savage. I really believe it's the trigger. Even with the lightest YoDave spring it just isn't as nice as the Savage Accu Trigger

5 shot groups at 50 yards with Norma Tac

Those are pretty good groups for 50yds. Norma Tac is actually made by RWS and I would classify it as lower tier target or match grade ammo in the ballpark of Wolf/SK Standard/Geco/RWS Target/Eley Club. You can always try different lot#'s of a specific ammo to see if it improves some, or spend more $$ on higher end ammo. However, that is pretty standard performance for that level of rimfire ammo.

As for the CZ trigger with a Yo-Dave kit not being better than a Savage Accu-trigger.... I have to respectfully ask if whoever did the trigger work on the CZ used the correct shim and spring combo?

I've shot a LOT of Savage Accu-triggers and Yo-Daved CZ's and never found the Savage to be better. What is your pull weight for both triggers?

This is a group that was shot from the same distance with the Savage using CCI Standard Velocity. I would say a significant improvement from what the CZ has been able to do with more expensive ammo.

As for the CZ trigger, I did not use any of the shims. Just swapped to the lightest spring. I didn't do anything to the Savage so regardless the CZ has already taken more work than the Savage did. Weight is just under 2lbs for both if I remember correctly.

I really want to like the CZ more. I'm a CZ fanboy as I own several CZ pistols but my admitted fanboism won't allow me to deny factual results.

Then sell that inferior CZ, buy another Savage to replace it, and be done with it.

I'm going to keep trying. I think there is something going on that my lack of knowledge and experience isn't allowing me to see. I may try to find someone with more experience to take a look at it. Or, perhaps I can find a way to improve the trigger a little as I really believe that's the issue. I'm not giving up on it yet!

Well, imo, there is a fairly high likely hood of that gun just shooting better. Rimfires are fickle. Some just shoot better than others regardless of the name on it, or even of the building techniques.
True for guns overall, in my experience. Sometimes you just get one that shoots really great. And sometimes you get one that doesn't!

I have some SK Standard to try.

If it takes Lapua to get it to shoot, it can find a new home. The Savage will shoot .2-.3 at 50 yards all day with cheap CCI SV. I won't be buying $14 a box Lapua to get another gun to shoot the same, or less. I don't think any "off the shelf" rifle is capable of better in my hands.

My b22 won't eject cci sv.... I emailed savage. It groups awesome with it but it's a single shot with it too! Lol only ammo that I have tried that it has problems with.

I screwed up a 455 when I removed the barrel to have it threaded. It went from sub MOA to. 1.5 to 2 at 100 yards. It took me a couple range days with the torque wrench to get the little booger shooting right again with the correct torques. Also after a clean the barrel it takes maybe 10-15 or so rounds to settle back down.

ETA: for real small groups mine like CCI Green (of course), Wolf Match Extra and Lapua Midas

Clean the extractors and firing pin as well as the respective channels. Mine is doing the same thing and that's the fix that I've found to most frequently solve the issue. I have not tried it yet. Too busy trying to get a more expensive rifle to shoot...

How does it shoot at 100? 150? 200?
You want to shoot your 22 as a trainer you might want to walk back talk of selling a gun cause you ain't buying Lapua.

If you want to run with the big dogs, you ain't gonna do it by picking guns and ammo you test at 50. If you ever want to make consistent hits at 200 you will have to choose ammo and rifles that can do it.

What a 22 can do at 50 means little to nothing for me, and you need @VA_GENTLEMAN to come in here and be honest about what he knows about what I'm telling you.

I understand and appreciate exactly what you're telling me. BUT, if it won't shoot at 50, it most certainly won't shoot at 200! I don't need anyone to tell me that.

Ordered it from Sportsman's Guide. I've read the Norma is virtually the same stuff. Cabelas has the Norma for $4/box.

It ain't virtually the same stuff unless it has the same lube, bullet shape, and headstamp.
