Fresh off the heels of a certain editor of the Winston Journal mentioning this (truly, I didnt realize it was there until about two or three weeks ago when I was walking around downtown for the thousandth time), the CSA monument on 4th has been vandalized.
The base was Spray painted with...well, I dont know what it says, the statue at the top was not damaged.
I had this discussion with a colleague yesterday, specifically about WS monument, and here we are.

One onlooker told the paper, "Balenton said he was OK with the statue’s defacing because “it gets us away from the Confederate mindset.”
Sophia Pappalardo of Winston-Salem accompanied Balenton as they stood in front of the statue. She said that all Confederate statues in the country should be removed.
“It’s a threat to different groups, such as black and brown people as well as Native Americans,” Pappalardo said. “It’s a threat to anyone who is different from the white majority. It’s a symbol of hate.”"
