In the midst of some remodeling. I'd like something bedside with a dependable biometric lock and quiet self open action so the wife and I could have quick access. Open to options and would prefer first hand experience if anyone has $0.02.

I have the hornady rapidsafe xl and couldnt be happier. Not sure if they have the biometric model mine is keypad and rfid. Had it over a year and open it almost everynight never failed. Has battery backup and a very dime green light on keypad so you see it in the dark. Quiet and pops open with authority. I can also fit 2 compact size guns g19 and p320 with light for example.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll take a look. I was thinking about biometric because it might be easier under stress but seemingly more room for errors in the unlock process as well.

Thats why i went with rfid. I was worried with biometric it may not read, or you may not put finger just right. I use biometric in certain securities of my job and have instances where they dont read. The rfid I took the bracelet rfid chip and epoxied it to my watch strap, then covered it with shrink wrap. So youd never notice it, its just the same as wearing my watch, but i can open any rfid device in my house and havent had a failure yet. Put watch up to safe and 2 seconds later have my gun.

Does the RFID sticker work reliably? I thought about going that route and putting the sticker inside the case on my cell phone (which sits next to me almost 95% of the time I'm in the house awake or asleep already).

Been watching this thread but haven't had anything to contribute (yet). Is the safe needed to keep a gun away from kids/guests or for some other reason? In other words, what would be the disadvantage for you in simply leaving the gun on top of a bedside table?

I went the opposite direction tech-wise. I didn't like the idea of having to rely on an item or gizmo to access my gun so I bought a mechanical shot-lock and mounted it inside the closet:

They make one for AR and pistol as well. Takes about 2 seconds to open, you can do it in pitch black with some practice, and no batteries.

And I went even lower tech. That's why I wanted to know his ultimate objective other than having a quickly accessible gun.

I have two small children. I carry daily and want a place to secure the pistol if I am asleep or in the shower. I may place two of whatever I decide on in the room so something is accessable if I'm not home.

Yessir, I have had it almost a year now and open it daily, sometimes a couple times a day. It has never failed me. it reads the tag through my watch band and epoxy/shrinkwrap, so yes the sticker on the back of your phone through a case should be no problem. I just liked it on my watch because my kids would never be able to grab my phone and open it. I never take my watch off so it was a perfect place. I also disabled the kaypad because I didnt want the 1 in 10,000,000 chance that they guess the code. That was not something hornady was set up for, so I removed the keypad, bent back the plastic pin that hits the 3 key after setting the sode using some 3's, and now you cannot use the KP to open it. And it has a key as well. Perfect solution for me.

One more thing to add, you can program the RFID stickers, bracelets, fobs so that you can have 5 safes/devices and all use the same access token. This was a huge plus for me.

Got it. I've worked out a no-tech way to hide a full-size 9mm almost "in plain sight" that makes it immediately available but virtually impossible for anyone else to find. But, I wouldn't use this solution if I had kids in the house. I'd never take that chance, no matter how small. Sounds like @Love2shoot has the right answer to your dilemma.

I have a wall safe from Harbor Freight that I've had for 7 years with no problems. Here's the link to their current model, though mine looks very similar with "Paragon" as the brand. I have 6 handguns mounted with rare earth magnets, along with their magazines and a few other things.

It isn't fancy, but it works and the price was right.

What's a watch?

That's slick, but won't work for me. Haven't had a watch on in 20 yrs.

I like that simple solution @Catfish

@Covfefe , that's an affordable solution with more storage. And I like the flush mount.

Still open to options but got to order stuff soon, I'm a couple weeks from dry wall.

It isn't perfectly flush. The lock sticks out about 1/2". I mounted a dry erase board over it (it's in my office) to conceal it, so I had to add some extra wood for the back of the frame to accommodate the lock. Then I put it on hinges and put a few magnets on the safe to keep it closed tight. I'll take a few pictures later today.

We went with a solution similar to Covfefe: a flush-mount wall safe. Although, not the same model, ours is the same design. I think we got ours from Tractor Supply for around $90.

It was easy to install and hides well by covering up with a picture frame, drape, etc.

Is it made for 16" or 24" stud spacing?

16". Installation was pretty easy. Just find a space between the studs, cut the right size hole with a drywall saw or utility knife, and screw using lag screws into the studs from the holes in the sides of the inside of the safe. It only takes a few minutes.
