Motorcycle love

Morrow Mountain. It was on that route, I just didn’t plot the route into the state park because I learned Google Maps only allows 10 way points.
Back when I used to live over there, Morrow Mtn was favorite of mine. Weekend days in the Summer was especially nice because the parking lot turns into a constantly changing bike show. Anything and everything shows up to show off their bikes, from custom, sport bikes, tourers and vintage.

I am stealing a post from another forum, by a guy over in Mocksville who likes to ride, a lot, and I thought that @Sp00ks and others who traverse NC on the pavement will appreciate. He was replying to a guy who travels on an old flathead from the northeast who was traveling with his crew to NC.

Here goes-

We love the mountains and visit Maggie Valley every year. But there is no place on earth like OBX.

Like mentioned the famous road here is Hwy 64, Murphy to Manteo. I have done it, but it takes a few days unless you are trying to rush right through. Way too much to try and enjoy in one trip unless you take at least two weeks in my opinion.

Coming down or riding back on the BRP to Maggie Valley is beautiful. Just note that there are a few major detours in NC. Most are south of Hwy 21 between 21 and Hwy 16. They are in the second year of bridge replacement (18 to 16) and replacing washed out roadway (21 to 18).

One of our favorite places is Freebornes and Stations Inn on Hwy 18 at the BRP (laurel Springs). They are both owned by the same person again. The little motel at Freebornes is cool. Good food, lots of bikes, music on the weekends and a great bar. Diane is the bar tender, and she is a sweetheart! You do have to detour now to get there, but not bad and all the roads are fun!

freebornes.com

Our other favorite places to stay on the BRP are Little Switzerland at the Inn, and Pisgah Inn.

We have stayed many times in Maggie at the Four Seasons Inn. The rooms on the back overlooking the creek are nice for sitting outside. However, we scouted a new place last fall and plan to stay at called Heart of the Valley Motel. Really nice folks, close to everything and they have both a motel and cabins if preferred.

Check out Bryson City also. Nice little town and if you haven't been there, it's how you get to the "Road to Nowhere". Worth the ride and also an interesting story. Always nice riding down the Nantahala River and stopping at the White-Water Center.

A real gem that we used to just ride by is Sylva, NC. We stayed there a couple of years back and it is such a beautiful town. Lots of excellent restaurants and a nice hotel called the Best Western Plus River Escape on the Tuckasegee River. Such a cool place and less than a half mile from the sight of the train wreck from the movie Fugitive. There are some cool cabins there also called The Great Escape Riverfront Cabins.

Of course, the most beautiful part of the BRP is from Cherokee to Asheville. Then from Ashville to Little Switzerland / Mt. Mitchell.

Hwy 64 east is awesome through the Waterfall Trail until you get to Highlands. From there it is a very slow ride. I live two miles off Hwy 64 in the Piedmont region east of Statesville. Hwy 64 east of my area is a very nice ride to the OBX with the exception of Raleigh.

The OBX for me is Hwy 12. From Corolla / Duck and the Currituck Light House, down through Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. Must eat at Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar. The Wright Brothers Museum is a must see.

Continuing South you will enter the Cape Hatteras Seashore which is simply amazing. The first stop should be at Bodie Island Lighthouse. Then you'll come to the Oregon Inlet. It has really changed at this point. I'm glad we got to experience the old Bonner Bridge and the very fragile and narrow land area south of the inlet. It used to flood really bad, and the bridge was considered the most dangerous in NC. It's all gone, and a huge bridge was built that extends into the sound for a few miles keeping traffic high and dry.

Kitty Hawk kites is a cool place to stop on the way and watch the very serious wind suffers. At Hatteras you'll find the famous Hatteras Lighthouse. An amazing sight. You can see its original location as well which is now under water. I was there in 1999 the last day you could go up in it prior to the move. I followed the move which was amazing. They laid railroad tracks, and it moved one inch per hour if memory serves me right.

There is a free ferry ride from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island which is a must visit. If you are that far south, I would stay at Ocracoke instead of Hatteras. Lots of good restaurants also. From there you can take the big ferry Swanquarter or to Cedar Island. It would depend on which way you will be heading and if the vacation is continuing. I would suggest Cedar Island because of Cape Lookout, Beaufort and Morehead City. All very cool places. Or you can reverse this and start at the South end and work your way North.

Happy planning and let me know if I can help you.

You guys might not realize but I live only a hours ride from the OBX less then 5 mins off 64 right outside of Plymouth NC. Feel free to PM me and you can use my house as a pit stop to stretch your legs and use the terlet and it will probably be cleaner then a fast food joints. So far, I've met Spooks, Red and Stickman, each visit was a high light in my life.

I have not been to Morrow Mountain in over 50 years, need to go back. Born and breed in Carthage. Thinking of moving back in a few years.
Been to most of the places in the post @fieldgrade copied.
Live in Bryson City, worked for Cherokee for 20 years, now work in Sylva. Road to nowhere is my quick fix if I need to ride, literally in my back yard.

And a good pit stop it was sir. We will stop by the next time we are down that way.

Been on the road two days to get mom moved to a different room at the nursing home.

Riding will commence hopefully in about 10 hours.

Stopped by Dips and Dogs in Broadway today. Not impressed and the parking lot sucks. Loose gravel, my favorite.....

We went to Selma, then back west on 301 through Four Oaks, ended up in Sanford then back home. That wind was rather brutal, lots of bikes out.

@fieldgrade when are you back in town ?

150 miles of no general plan. Found lunch in Asheboro, saw a huge crowd at the top of Morrow Mountain (including a group of 30 3 wheelers and a wedding), hit a couple miles of gravel along the way, all in all a good day.

Where did you eat in Ashboro? We should get a group of us to meet for lunch sometime. Good half way point.

Ate at "The Table". Had a line out the door so figured it must be good :), and a patio to get some sun but it sure was windy. Steak sandwich was tasty. They had a waffle w/ bbq on the menu that looked dang good too. More upscale than hole in the wall but prices were pretty normal for nowadays.
Definitely. Looked like plenty of choices in the area.

We like "the flying pig" great Philly. Wind was horrible, the bike is dusty as heck.

Don’t be dissin’ Dips n Dawgs. I ride to Broadway just to go there.

I’ll be at the brewery tomorrow. Tenish.

Still tightening hose clamps and three drain plugs from servicing the bike and installing the oil filter relocation kit.

My Harleys never leak.

Till I start screwing with them.

I'm going to order the cool flow fan this week and probably the oil cooler fan in a couple weeks and have them enable both when I take it in for a flash.

Either Bulldog or an indy shop. Tobacco Road is stupid, 1 hr min labor.....
TR charges more per shop hour than anybody around. I think they were $150 per hour 3.5 years ago last time I asked.

Double Eagle is $115.

Bull Dog didn’t quite finish the job when I went in for a recall software update, and a flash to enable the fog light indicator lamp on the instrument cluster, after I installed the fogs. Fortunately I caught it before leaving after waiting three hours for what they told over the phone would be 30 minutes.

Maybe I will try Cox as well. I didn't think about them.

Elijah is the parts service guy who schedules service. Great gut. Gets pulled in 8 directions at once. They just don’t always do what he tells them. It’s a small staff and he’s not the boss. But their techs seem competent, and they did the set up on my police bike.

Left work early on Friday kenneled the dogs hauled my ass to Kill Devil Hills for the ECBR ride had dinner with everyone hot the hotel and decided to ride loan wolf back home after breakfast wasn't feeling the group ride at the time.

Some dedicated riders....Superman of new jersey (Sam) put a new clutch in his bike Friday morning and rode down yes from NJ....had a few from GA and SC ride out...they got caught at alligator river 88 in a 55 careless/reckless all three said hey it is what it is will get lawer and pay it.

Sam's starter went south in Engelhardt (first gas stop)...they diagnosed it at Backwaterjacks in the back of a truck...new starter in Jville for the last stop.

And as my luck has been I had an exhaust clamp that would loosen up and cause an odd knocking sound that I decided today to fix....yeah 6 new ss hose clamps and $40 later it's all done. The clamp was the top one for the front cylinder so it was all but impossible to snake only it out...and the collector heat shield holds both shields on so it had to come off...aswell as the right floor board....FML as of late.

I asked Bulldog about the part today and they were going to have to order it. I can have it shipped to the house for the same price....maybe I'll call dble eagle Monday and see if they have one in stocks.

It seems if I order online, TR gets credit for the sale through HD.

Used to be till recently you could pick which dealer gets credit but that changed.

I know you've already spent the money, and maybe this is what you used but......I've been there before. What seems to be an upgrade is a lined hose clamp. Idea is, the lining covers the slots for the clamp gear so it doesn't bite into a rubber hose. But it seems to give the clamp additional strength.

Years ago we were on a road trip and stopped at a HD dealership in Kentucky. As I was putting my gloves in the saddle bag I noticed a heat shield clamp broken. So I went to the parts department and asked for a #24 hose clamp. I got a "deer in the headlights look". When I told him I needed a heat shield clamp he understood.

The boat place had the heavy duty clamps but they were $14 each vs $4/$5 each.

Ordered the cool flow and the oil cooler fan this afternoon. That hurt the wallet.i hope it was worth it.

Gorgeous ride through the countryside today.

That road king paint was gorgeous.
I thought it was all custom the first few times I saw it until I realized it was a CVO, factory paint.

CVO’s cost stupid money, but you’ll get one fine paint job.

This softail springer showed up at the brewery a few months ago, and I thought it was all custom. Not “custom”. A CVO

I've done the HD factory tour twice. They show you examples of paint faults that don't make it through inspection and if they weren't marked you'd never see them.

I've heard that even Honda salesmen brag on HD's paint and chrome.
