with the exceptions of bargains, and good women, I have never hunted. I have fished but it's been years...

I want to hunt something manly, like a bear or wolves... something capable of hunting me... does that make sense? Something like "what would teddy Roosevelt do?"

I am limited in funds, but have a nice 45-70 lever gun ready to go...

What am I looking at cost wise? I realize I will probably have to travel a bit but am excited at the thought.

There's plenty of deer and coyote in our area. But, bear numbers are still low around Stokes county.

Hunted with my son in law 2 yrs ago, down near Wilmington. LOTS of bears down there!

A trip down east could include bears and hogs. Go for it!

Anyone willing to teach me basic coyote hunting in Stokes then? I suppose it makes sense to start small then work the way up, lest I ruin my only shot at a bear... :(

I have no experience, except training for 2-legged predators, but I'm told I have natural ninja footsteps.. ;)

Everybody has to start somewhere, I'll be glad to give as much help as I can. Have you got your hunting license?
I know of a spot over in Sandy Ridge that needs some coyotes removed.

Lamentably no, I have only the rifle which sits in the safe collecting dust... no camo, no idea of what I need. I will start googling though.

Yes, he does beautiful work. I've seen a few he has done.

Bear season is still months away. But, you can work on getting gear, practicing with the rifle, reading and watching videos.
Coyotes are year-round, night-time hunting. And good practice for deer and bear.

If you really want to hunt some bear, you could come to the mountains this coming season. A bear tag cost 10$ plus the cost of your normal license. You only need to do some scouting and whatnot ( on public land) Three Top, Pond mountain, Buffalo Cove are all good areas for bear.

I have been thinking of getting my bear tag this year and getting deep in the woods of the mountains for a bear.

Or do a guided hunt somewhere.

Also a 45-70 will be plenty enough

You really dont need camo. Just a plaid or green shirt and some brown pants will do. You know earth tones. How well do you shoot that 45-70? Just wondering before you go maiming everything in the woods.

Sounds like you want to track down your prey. I like the way that sounds. Sitting around waiting on them is boring. I like to stalk myself.

I gave up doing that. Heard the prey but never saw anything. Vewwey Warlly and waskally it was...

Then you did it wrong. I do it because its a challenge but its really a lot easier than i thought. First time got 30ish yards from 3 deer twice. Stalking yotes isnt going to be easy. I ues a long bow so a rifle will ease your troubles.

I don't think you understood what I was referencing...

An interesting question, I only shot it once at about 50 yards, but did hit my target... blew that bag of mulch to hell and gone. :D

And no, I haven't done a hunter safety course yet, this idea only came to me last night, so I am still researching.

Well practice up and get ready for the season. Take the HSC.

Good for you. Once you have the hunter safety course and your license, you already have the big ticket item in the 45/70. I have killed coyotes, deer and have taken mine hog hunting, so good for anything in NC. Only two things I consider absolutely necessary are knee high rubber boots (just makes life easier) and a facemask. Amazing how much shine a face can have. Grab issues of Field and Stream etc. and you should be set.

Yotes I love hunting them ole songdogs you might opt for something a little smaller 45-70 is way over kill and will destroy the hide

the learning curve on something that is a predator like a bear or coyote is STEEP without using dogs. STEEP.

I would start out in the squirrel woods or rabbit fields first, so you can get a little blood on you. First time I shot a deer, it was emotional. Just warning you up front.

Ikarus, I see what you are saying, but I don't ever want to kill something that isn't a pest that I don't intend to eat.

Shooting feral hog, coyote is like shooting some ISIS dude except with less restrictive ROE. :D

Shooting rabbit, squirrel, etc just seems cruel... unless We are talking plane crash in mountain scenario... just for me..,

Ill take you deer hunting one evening if you aren't a jerk. I can put you on a doe if you are going to eat it. Just make sure you are liscened up.

And for the record….being an older thread….I don't think you need to be hunting anything that will kill you if you have not ever hunted before. :) But, there is a great place up in Greenville, WVA, Mountain Meadows Hunting Preserve with some great hog hunting. They have fence, but its a 200+ acreage where the hogs are. You wont even know your on a preserve. And its not too far up there.

My problem now is that I'm working six days a week and need that last day to recuperate...

I could skip Saturday's, but that overtime is might pleasing.... especially if a certain SHARE act passes. ;)

You don’t have to harvest the deer, rabbits and even turkey; good stalking practice especially out of season. Of course carry a gun if you’re in pigland.

I wouldn’t suggest trying to learn to stalk bears in the spring, they can be quite stealthy right up to the ripping your face off part.
