Hi everyone! I wanted to share some pics of the Remington 1100 I inherited from my grandfather a few years ago. When I received it, it had a light bit of rust starting to grow all over the receiver and barrel. It still shot like brand new, but it was ugly and I was afraid that the rust, if left unchecked, would only get worse.
So, I decided to take it apart and refinish it. I paid a local gun store to remove the rust and cerakote (Burnt Bronze) all of the metal parts, except for the bolt... Then I began the laborious process of stripping off the old thick poly lacquer.
Once the stock and handguard were taken down to bare wood, I did some VERY light sanding and then stained the wood furniture with 20 coats of pure Tung oil... I didn't use the "tung oil finish" that you can get at Lowes and Home Depot. I used 100% pure Tung oil that I had to buy off the internet. I rubbed it with super fine steel wool, put on a layer of tung oil, wiped off the excess, and let it dry for three days. I did that over and over again until the wood furniture had 20 coats. This process took almost 2 months.
I love the way it came out. I think my granddad would be really happy to see it.
