Let's play some Battleship!

It appears the printouts directly from Stag are hard to see due to the colors. Let’s use the attached black and white versions instead. Still two different styles to make some targets easier than others, depending on your preference, which can affect strategy.

Do not use these old links below:

Standard CFF Monthly Rimfire Benchrest Challenge Rules
- Target Size: Standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper - Choose the "Print to fit" option when printing.
- Target distance: 50 yards
- Any shooting position you'd like
- Front rests, bipods, front/rear shooting bags, bunny ears, ... etc. are all ok.
- No full length rifle mechanical rail/sled type rests allowed
- Iron sights or optics of your choice are all allowed
- All done on the honor system. Shoot it, score it, post it.
- Winner chooses the target and challenge for the next month.
- Post copy of your target, setup, where shot, and score

Scoring:
- There are 8 ships with a total of 22 targets (orange and green dots on the ships). Let's limit the number of shots to 30 shots per page. That allows you an extra shot per ship (on average).
- You earn points by destroying ships, so you must hit all targets on a ship to destroy it.
- Breaking the edge of the target circle counts as a hit.
- Short Ship (hit both 2 targets) = 5 Points
- Medium Ship (hit all 3 targets) = 10 Points
- Large Ship (hit all 4 targets) = 15 Points
- Tie breaker 1 - Total number of targets hit
- Tie breaker 2 - Lowest number of shots taken (expecting to be all 30, but just in case)
- Tie Breaker 2 - Lowest price of ammo used. We can use Outdoor Limited. They are a NC dealer with a selection of almost anything (even if not in stock).

Let the games begin and good luck ladies and gentlemen!

Hopefully the point system will get you thinking about risk/reward!

And I'll leave the Vudoo out of the competition this month and see if I can come close to you all with the CZ.

Just for clarification...
Does breaking the edge of a dot count as a hit or does it need to be within the dot?

Definitely just breaking the edge of the target circle counts as a hit.

Thanks for asking. I forgot to say that originally, so I have updated the instructions.

The dots are larger than last month, so hopefully we can get some more hits. Although I am a little worried about the green ones. They might be really hard to see. May affect strategies as well.

Printed one out in gray scale and another in color. Hopefully will make it out next week. All this rain has the range shut down until at least Tuesday.

Yeah the rain is brutal lately. I hope to try it out at least once this weekend too. Gray scale might be a good idea.

I printed gray scale. Is not easy to see. I was at the range today for a while but it was either pouring or gusty or both so I didn’t try it yet. Hopefully this weekend.

Well I found this in time to actually give a go. Time to do some printing...

My wife said she could try to make a better version in Photoshop. What do you guys think would be best:
Black ships with white or bright circles
White ships with black targets

White ships meaning black outlines?

Best is probably everything with heavy-ish black outlines on white paper. Black spots or ships will make black reticles unusable on the target or wind holding slightly off.

Agreed, but thought I would ask. That is why I thought about white holes on black ships as an option, but I didn’t think about holding off. I will see if she can make it simple with thick lines like last month but with slightly larger targets. I think these are 3/8” vs 1/4” last month.

I updated the original thread with the updated target. Still two different styles to make some targets easier than others, depending on your preference, which can affect strategy.

Anybody try it this month? The rain has messed me up on the days I’ve had a chance, and the other nice days have been family days. I haven’t gotten to try it yet.

I haven't, yet. I'm taking the day off on the 31st and hoping to spend a little time at the range that morning.

No. Between rain and now being out of town. I am not sure when I will get the chance. Hopefully this weekend.

Not me either ... work, family visiting, vacation, and primary range closed this month, and traveling to see other family. Not sure if I’ll be able to get it in but haven’t ruled it out.

Well, I pulled out the CZ today to shoot the target. Sun was going down and goes down right in my face with the target in the shade, but I could see well.
I hit 8 of the first 10 targets, and was feeling great. Then it all went into the crapper. It took 9 shots to hit the next 3 targets. I couldn’t see at all. I could not find the dot at all. The glare was killing me. I thought I only had 3 shots let (I was on 19), so when I missed, I just moved to another sheet. I thought it was max 22 shots... more to come on that later.
The next sheet, I still couldn’t see and hit 1 out of 6 and just packed up. Couldn’t see with the lighting anymore, so why waste any more shots.

I was coming to post my score and realized we get 30 shots!!! I have 10 more shots. I need to go back out there and try for 10 more, before I post. I doubt I will win after that spell of blindness I had today, but hopefully I can find some time one evening this week to finish off that target and post something.

This is my first target that I shot today with my new Savage BTVSS and Im pretty pleased with its performance..Its been more then three years since I pulled a trigger and I had limited time at the range today.. I shot about 20 to get the scope dialed in sort of, then threw the target up and there is a dime on there for reference.
Target #1 I realized that I need to further adjust the scope.
#2 Oh Yeah,, this thing is a lazer if I do my part.
#3 Not so bad..
#4. Im wandering a bit,, its hot in the range.
#5 Im falling apart and don't know why, need to get some water and regroup.
#6.. Not so bad..
#7 Im feeling the results from not eating breakfast and now its 2;30 PM,, I cant anticipate the heart beat in my shoulder effecting my shots anymore.. I forgot about that part, Isolate your shoulder.
#8.. more of the same
Lesson learned, its tough learning a new rifle. Eat before you go to the range and hydrate well while you are there..

Nice shooting Lager. You get 30 shots. There isn’t a requirement to be one shot at each target in this one. You get points for the ships you sink. You could technically shoot every shot at one ship if required to sink it.

That means you have a few more shots to take. Did the same thing I did, but you were more consistent.

I understand Smok,, But to me, this is a competition and in the bench rest world you only get one shot per target thus me treating it as such. But thanks for the clarification of the rules. I know this is all in fun and if some one beats me and takes an extra shot to do it, my hats off to them. To someone that cleans their card with a single shot per target like I did, this makes me try harder an they are "The Man" .

Looks like I have this Wednesday off, so Im going to head to the range again and try another target. I might do better, might do worse. Either way, my first target that I entered will stand as mine..It was nice to get back into shooting again, its been almost 4 years since I pulled a trigger on anything and my first target showed that..Here is another tip that helps with eyestrain that's caused by looking downrange thru your scope for an extended amount of time trying to line your shot up correctly. Take your shooting glasses and using tape, cover up the non dominate eye lens. This allows you to keep both eyes open and allow sharper vision for your dominate eye while shooting many targets at one time..Hope this helps...

Looks like I won’t be able to get back out there to finish this one off or start another.

1) Started with the 2 target ships first. This was supposed to be my first target and the safe target, but is in fact my only target his month. (Budgets take up a lot of time!)
2) Missed first shot. Sunk it with next two.
3) Missed first shot again. Sunk it with the next two.
4) Sunk the final two 2shot ships in straight shots.
5) Sunlight in the face combined with eye strain and I could barely see. It took me 9 shots to hit the next 3. I thought I only had 3 shots left, so when I missed the next shot, I packed up.

I should have chosen a better time of day, but it worked for a while. I wish I had time to shoot it again. It was on when I could see. I am also going to move my target this weekend to get out of aiming at the sun.

Ended with 30 points.

Shot one of my CZs this month. On a table in the yard, with the rifle laid across my range bag.

Got my stuff gathered to up to be at PHA first thing tomorrow. Drop the boy off at school 7:20-7:30, then head up 85.

Only change from last time is a new can on the CZ. AAC Element 2 making its maiden voyage. The Sparrow will now live on the RAR instead of moving back and forth.

Also hoping to finally shoot the July golf target while I'm there.

Darn good shooting !!! You liking the SK ammo? Ive always found it shot well for me..

I do like the SK ammo. CCI SV has shot well in my CZs, and the STD+ does about the same, but is a little more consistent. I really like Rifle Match. I need to give Pistol Match another try, as it wasn’t as consistent as Rifle, but that could have easily been the lots I was using.

I wanted to do a second target and use some Rifle Match, as it is much more consistent for me, but I won’t make it this month.

Uggh. That's all I have to say at the moment.

I would love to shoot this with another shooter like battleship! Back and forth. That could be fun.

Good idea. I don't think I'll be able to get out, but that is a solid idea for future months. If I am really lucky I'll get out this weekend, but more likely next week. :(

I shot the July & August targets (1 each)...but didn't score them before I headed to the beach.

Here is mine. Shot 3 weeks ago on the 10th. Deadlines are the only reason I get anything done [emoji4]

30 shots, even if you have a hard time finding them all. I _think_ I got them all, but you can judge @Smok3y

I shot the target 4 times - as often happens, the first one was best. First two with the near rifle (CZ455 with Lilja barrel), and last two with the 455 I have been shooting for years in the back. The other scores were low-mid 20s.

Edit: I didn’t actually score any of them. I was thinking out of 30, not 70 - about 65-85% hits on the 22 target spots.

@JimP42 That is some great shooting!!! I agree that it looks like you got them all. 70 points! That is what I was hoping someone would do. Way to go!!

Now I know it can be done. I gotta give it a try with the other rifle.

@JimP42 Very nice shooting!

Well I did not make it out for August. Hopefully Sept will be calmer around this house.
