Nike Signs Kaepernick to Ad Deal

I have a few Nike golf socks that need to be replaced anyway. I might have a few Nike golf balls. This won't affect me much, as they have never gotten much of my money. It would prevent them from getting any direct money in the future from me in the way of merchandise purchases.

Walked away from their products years ago, cheaply made and over priced, but this might just work for some demographic.

I don't wear their shoes, and own only one T shirt. It's going in the trash.

Throw it my way. I'll be putting all mine in the rag bin. They are good for cleaning up dog/cat barf or grease and oil, then throw away. Get some use out of them...

The crowd I see purchasing their over price trendy fashion stuff will like this. With Nike being the supplier for the NFL, NBA, NCAA Basketball and such the target market sales there will likely be better than loss of sales from people like us (but I don’t own any Nike stuff anyway). The thug sales might go up more than patriotic sakes go down ...

I think this is going to wind up bad for both of them:

Nike will wind up losing customers because they paired their brand with politics
CK will dilute his message because he "sold out"

Just sit back and let them make their mistakes.

Had to quit buying their shoes years ago do to fit issues. I do have one of their golf shirts from some years back that I wish I had a dozen of. Best wicking shirt ever. I did not realize until I saw Tiger in a Taylor Made ad that Nike quit him and quit the golf equipment business. Claimed they never made money on it. I absolutely can't stand CK and what he stands (kneels) for. He if would just come out and say it was all BS and just a publicity stunt, I would have some respect for him but he won't, but that's all it was, was LOOK AT ME, I'm special and I'm being ignored. He even said he would have never done it had he known it would have gotten him black balled from the NFL.

Nike is a international brand. The US is still its largest market but it has not been its leading growth market for a while. China and Asia in general is where their growth is. I do not see this effecting the larger company. They are not Dicks Sporting Good a US only retailer. Its like comparing a regional grocery chain to Ahold Delhaize. They have crunched the numbers. They know what effect it will have on the bottom line and have still chosen to move forward. https://www.statista.com/statistics/241692/nikes-sales-by-region-since-2007/

Now as far a KP is concerned who cares. He was a system QB who was in the right place at the right time. He did not get better and the defensives in the NFL like they always do caught up to the wrinkle that made him successful. As far as his protest I believe that he has every right to protest whatever he chooses to. That is one of the fundamental freedoms this country was founded on. I do not restrict the right to protest to only those who I agree with. I believe it is an inalienable right. I think that way too much has been made of this issue. The more people scream, tweet and vent anger his way the more relevant he stays.

Good now maybe he'll shut up.

Fat chance. I'm sure they ran revenue loss projections beforehand and decided they could take the hit. The brainwashed soccer moms and cuckold dads will still buy their products without a second thought. The real problem in all of this isn't CK or Nike. It's the people buying their overpriced shoes and game tickets. Imagine what would happen if most of the stadiums at games this season were nearly empty..... CK would instantly become kryptonite and nobody would even know who he was within six months.

But like I said - ain't gonna happen because people gotta have their ball games!

What is wrong with that. People like all forms of entertainment. If its not my money they are spending I could care less. There is a lot of brainwashing on all sides. IMHO I do not believe it is contained to "soccer moms."

If this guy was really in it for the message, he wouldn't allow himself to be whored out as a marketing pawn. If he thinks he's going to get any appreciable "message time" during this stunt, he's sadly mistaken. All we'll be left with is a group of sheep that gravitate to his unknown message and those that will have their flames of hatred/annoyance fanned even more due to this.

My post you quoted was a reply to someone saying that maybe now CK would shut up. My reply was that he won't because people will still continue to buy nike and NFL tickets. Where did I say there was anything "wrong" with anything?

Seems implied with verbiage like " brainwashed soccer moms and cuckold dads". Why the need for such inflammatory blanket characterizations?

It's called a forum. I think there's even an ignore button somewhere.

FYI, the blanket characterization was just an off the cuff generalization for people who financially support others that may not have their best interests in mind.

New balance for me anyway. I've been wearing them for years. The problem is Nike makes a lot of shoes for other companies. Just like wolverine makes a lot of boots for other brands. I think timberline, rockys arw made by wolverine

Nike’s consumers and NKE shareholders will decide if that is a good idea...NKE down -2.29% Pre market
This is what matters, but sadly, I’d say anything under 10% drop is a win for them. They can chalk it up as a one time PR issue and promise that sales will increase due to their target demo. Then we can sit back and see if they actually deliver.

This is too bad because I really like Nike golf shirts. Guess I’ll stick to UA, just gotta search a little harder for deals.

Im still waiting for someone to point out something this Colin dude "sacrificed"...

From the way I see it, he was at best a mediocre football player. Now, he has contracts, acclaim, and is a household name. He looks more like he was on the downward spiral when he rolled the social justice dice and happened to come out a winner.

What @wvsig said is true: they are an international corporation, and they have how many contracts with professional and college athletics? This won't affect their bottom line, at all.

And his whole BS lawsuit going into arbitration about the NFL colluding to keep him from playing, that whiny-ass kid has been offered QB jobs, but he turned them down. KC is a societal aberration, a flash-in-the-pan, and in 10 years his name will be a hiccup in NFL lore.

Don't know much about sports, or the guy that's in the ad. My reason for not buying Nike is that they use child labor to make shoes for pennies and then sell them for $200. It doesn't get much more unethical than that. Haven't owned anything Nike in over 20 years. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Oh it's worse. He has been on the payroll at Nike since he left the 49'rs. That's right, they have been paying him. Guess they wanted to try and figure out how to get some of it back. I don't think it was well thought out. Politics making business decisions again.

OTOH, if they plan to use him to sell kneepads this is effing brilliant.
Signature edition kneepads. :D

Just like I think there should have been a signature edition paper shredder with Ollie North's name on it. ;)

But...but.... I thought he sacrificed everything!

You guys do remember after SF offered him up for trade and Denver did meet with him and even made an offer but he didn’t like the money and terms so he said nope. I don’t know what Elway was thinking or what they offered but he did have at least one firm offer past the SF thing. He didn’t sacrifice anything ... he just thought he was better than and worth more the the NFL markets thought. The grievance/suit he filed is mainly media hype and trying to get the NFL to pay him hush money or maybe even get him a media job as an analyst or such.
