Deer down thread

Saw a spike and four does this morning. Think more came through but they were all behind me and none presented a shot. Hopefully tonight.

Man dont you need a hunting partner?? I clean up behind myself, drag animals, i can even do the truffle shuffle if you get bored!!!! That was a good day!!

Haha! Dad is my hunting partner.

If it weren't for my Dad, all my cube steak would come from IGA. He pretty much does everything to make these hunts possible.. I sit down, wait, then boom! Taking a ride in the truck.

He's an awesome man!

Made a solid bow shot on a doe a few weeks ago. Waited over an hour then my BIL and I went in to track. Ended up bumping her twice and tracked over 800y before giving up due the trail going cold in a cutover that had grown back in thick. I know she’s dead but just couldn’t get her to lie down and bleed out. It was a steep shot so probably only got one lung.

Got this 8 last week though.

This mornings muzzleloader hunt. I hunt from the ground, got seated at 6:30am and the doe strutted by at about 50 yards at 8:15. Two 50gr triple 7 pellets behind a Powerbelt 245grain copper aerotip, only took one step and dropped. The hard part was dragging her 1+ mile back to the jeep

This narrow racked 7 walked out of a thicket around 4pm trailing a doe. 60 yard quartering shot with a saboted 250 grain SST over two 777 pellets. He jumped up at the shot and took off. I heard him crash but lost him visually in the smoke. After a bit of trying to find first blood I found a huge spray with a 2-3" chunk of lung in it. From that point it wasn't a long track.

Damn Willis, is there anything left to eat? :D

Heard shots all around this morning and afternoon, no shot from me today. Passed on a button buck, hope he survives another year or two into something nice. Maybe in the morning his dad will stroll by the stand.

Was hunting deer, but couldn't pass this up.

Went this morning. Only shot I heard was about an hour before daylight. That's enough to piss you off. Had one come in and walk around about 30 minutes before light, but left. Right as soon as I could start to see the wind really picked up. Didn't see anything but a couple squirrels the rest of the morning.

The morning here was quiet as a tomb. No shots at all around other than someone target shooting with a .22 on the neighboring property.

There were a number of shots in the afternoon starting at about 3. After I saw my two and shot one of them, deer were EVERYWHERE on the ride home. Every field had a herd in it.

The old lady got her first deer ever this morning. Perfect heart shot, with a crossbow on a good sized doe. She's pretty proud and excited.

Eta: Doe had a lot of fat, neighbor reports the same this year on some bucks. If the old timers are right I'll be rolling in OT.

BWAHA, not funny, but looks like the same model my buddy bought and the spokes on the wheel did the same thing with just a fat doe in it and he had bought it to haul bear out of the woods when he killed one. He went ballistic on the poor girl at Cabela's and then they gave him the mfg. phone number to call. They were going to replace with the same wheel of course. By this time he is totally bent out of shape, cussing and yelling at the phone. I am dying laughing trying to tell him, the poor kid on the phone is not at fault. Even told him we could drive to the local bike shop and I would buy him a couple of real spoke wheels. I had never seen someone so pissed on a broken product. Might have been how much he bragged about it when he got it and how he would be rolling while I was dragging. I still laugh thinking about his tantrum. Bet he still has it with the broke wheel.

Well I can't complain. I bought it from Cabela's when it was $59 shipped, and that was about a dozen deer ago and several years. I think I'm just gonna find some 20" bicycle tires online and swap em out.
BTW I only broke it because it was on the back of the car carrier on my Suburban at PDNWR and we backed into a ditch and the wheel caught under and snapped lol.

All joking aside I wholeheartedly endorse the deer cart. You can see mine above in the right margin of one of my photos. Comes in handy on long uphill drags out of a creek bottom.

Northern Tool should have some better replacements. My cart has a single 20" bicycle wheel and the frame is made out of welded 1" EMT conduit. The single wheel tracks ebetter than 2 wheels and is easier to pull over down trees.

I would like to find some sort of cart but not sure how well it would work in the mountains, I am also thinking of butchering on the ground and carring out in a backpack.

Quartering is definitely doable, was the only choice on many hunts I've been on, not bad in the cooler months. But pretty miserable when it's hot, buggy, raining, or really cold and/or snowing. Then there's the hassle of keeping dirt and hair off everything. So much nicer to hang it back at home and take your time with all the right equipment.

My 23 year old nephew hunted with me today. First time he's been able to in 5 years with being in the Marines, being a Dad, and being overseas.

This morning I loaned him one of my .300 BLK rifles. He said his goal was to fill all six tags today.

Well he got halfway there. He was stacking bodies....

Buck and a doe this morning and another doe this afternoon.

I take it you eat a lot of venison.

It’s free

Well except for the license, and the camo, and the guns, and bullets, and stands, Yada

Took this 8pt in the last bit of light..

Shot him at about 10yds with a 100gr .243 soft point. The bullet lodged in the muscle of the opposite front leg. He ran about 40yds.

In my nephew's case this morning it cost him his license. Using my rifle and ammo. No camo. His pawpaws tree stand, and he even borrowed an orange hat from me. LOL. He's a good kid and I'm happy to see him a) get a chance to hunt and b) be successful.

Posted this in another thread but I'm too proud not to post it again..... My 7yr old daughter killed her first deer this Saturday afternoon with my .300 blackout. Dropped him with a high shoulder shot. He was an 8pt but busted a g3 off in the past couple weeks. I couldn't be prouder!!!
