Deer down thread

Ole lady called me this morning and said some chucklehead ran a deer over out on the main road.
Said he was standing over it and then went and got in his car and left.
It was a little knot head I had been watching every night in my field.
All I could save was his back-straps but they ate good for breakfast this morning.

This pic reminds me of a hunt several years ago.

I shot a deformed 8pt fairly early. I watched him run behind my tree and fall. He was down and wasn't getting back up. It was about 30° that morning, so I decided to stay in the tree. About an hour later, a 7pt showed up. I dropped him as soon as he stepped in the road. I put both empty shell casings in my pocket.

When Dad showed up, he asked if it was me that shot. I pulled the casings out of my pocket and he asked, "You had to shoot him twice?" That's when I pointed to the other deer.

It was chuckle worthy. Lol.

Did that with a bow once but it was four dear, had to leave, ran out of arrows.

Never go to the woods without 6 now.

Twas a beautiful Thanksgiving morning to be out. This is the biggest doe I've killed in a while. They don't often get over 100 pounds around these parts. This one was well over that.

Now to decide which Bark River is most deserving this morning. Probably the little Ultralight Bushcrafter with red and black kirinite handles. She hasn't got to clean one yet. Under 2 ounces but CPM3V steel should make short work of the free meat.

“Madison! Bring me a handful of knives from the shop!”
:D

Almost daily, these guys are 10 feet from the porch - leaving them be for now.

Took a button buck yesterday evening.
Thought it was a doe.
298 yards, Ruger M77 All weather 30-06.
Heart/lung shot, went clean through.
150gr federal soft points.
I Normally use Nolsler ballistic tips but found a box of factory federal. Figured I'd use it up.

I took one over Thanksgiving too. Waste of a good buck tag, but they make for some good meat.

Sat in the shed for 20 minutes or so and had 6 run past pretty quick. Figured I’d try to pop the next one and just so happened he stopped at the edge where the rest had entered the field. 11-30-18

My BIL downed one this morning.

He had missed two smaller bucks earlier in the week. I checked his rifle and it was about 4" left at roughly 60yds. I dialed it in to just an inch left because I'm not sure where it would be hitting with him.

His next shot:

A nice 10 (he says 11...lol) taken around 7 this morning and right in the corn. He weighed in at only 150, which explains why he was at the corn pile. Lol.

Killed this small 8 pt at dusk--I swear I thought it was a doe. It came out late in the dark corner of the field I was hunting. It's piebald with what looks like a chipmunk stripe on it's chest. Shot it with my 270-- that's two77 bore diameter-- and it was DRT as they say in the pulps.

Get that mounted. Definitely a nice pattern.

two77, finally got that one he's been looking for. Way to go!

Got one on the ground about 7:30 this morning. Worked 13.5 hours, came home, changed, and went to the woods. Perfect morning.

Tell me about it. I got a solid first shot but it presented a second shot so I took it. Crazy how little reaction there is to being hit when the noise is not there. And pretty wild hearing the bullet smack home too

I’ll toss this in here too. Did a little still hunting in the snow. Too bad I don’t have enough property to really do it right.

Went hunting for a bit. Chased a pair of does around. Crossed their track before I got in the woods. Saw them just into the woods but never got a clear shot. They doubled back into the thicket which put me hunting towards some houses so I backed out and left. Fun time though.
