So, my wife and I have been talking about getting a few pet goats for a while now.

Today, while she was at work, I decided to go to a livestock auction and finally make it happen. I went there with the intention of buying one pregnant nanny goat so that my two young daughters can (in a few weeks) witness the miracle of birth.

Also, I'll tell you that I grew up with goats, but I have never bought one of my own before. While driving to the livestock auction, I called my dad to ask for advice on what kind of goat to buy and how much to pay.

When I got inside the auction house, they started running goats through, one at a time, and the auctioneer was taking a mile a minute. I bid on one young nanny goat, but stopped bidding at $150 and someone else won. A few minutes later, I bid on another young nanny goat, but again I stopped bidding at $150 and someone else won.

By this time, we were about half way through all of the goats. I started getting nervous that I was going to go home empty handed. I told myself, I'm gonna have to keep bidding and stop being a sissy.

Well, next up came a beautiful young boar goat buck. He was a good looking little feller, so I bid on him... The awesome thing was, I got him for $125 and WON. Then I thought, "well you can't have babies without a girl, so maybe I'll buy two goats; they'll have babies; I'll sell the babies; rinse and repeat".

So, a few minutes later, a good looking little female came into the ring and I started bidding. This one only went to $100 and I WON again!

With this, I jumped up and headed to the office to pay for my new pets, already thinking about all the money I was going to make on the thousands of babies they would produce. After paying, I had them loaded into the bed of my truck and I headed home.

I waited patiently until my wife came home from work and my kids got home from school. When they were all assembled, I took them into the backyard to show them our new pets.

Within 1 minute, my wife said, "I thought you said you got a boy and a girl. These both have balls. " I said, "No, the announcer clearly said that one was a female. That must be a milk sack, not a ball sack. " I confidently reached down to touch the milk sack and guess what!? I got a big hand full of baby goat balls...

So, here I am with two beautiful young billy goats and no does to breed them to.

Anybody live near Pittsboro and want to trade my spotted brown billy for one of your young females?

I feel like such a dumbass for buying two male goats...

Did the paperwork list the goat as a female? They do look good.

I feel a complaint to the LGBTQ PETA DIVISION coming on.....lol

I do NOT know anything about auction houses...but feel like they should be responsible...false advertising kind of thing..saying one goat is female and it's not.
Good luck

You would have been able to back out before you left. Once you leave it's too late.

Enjoy the kids. They are funny.

Shoot just take the least likeable one back to the stockyards. There was someone $5 behind you on the bidding, wont lose much if any. For the record now until after easter is a terrible time to buy goats. Alot of folks buy them for consumption this time of year. They used to have an easter goat & sheep only sale there every year. I sold all my goats a few years back and haven't messed any since.

Just cut that one and have a wether. It will make a better pet for your kids and you’ll still have a stud. If I had somewhere to house the little fella I would buy him but I haven’t put any fence up yet for goats.

I have sperience wid goats. Anywhere you see a goat, it's because he wants to be there. When he decides to go, he will go. I have seen regular field goats walk a 1 x 4 board fence. They are Great animals! Just kinda headstrong.

The majority of goats that are ran through auction have one of the three major diseases.

CL
CAE
Johne's

Please reconsider breeding and making money off them.

Sir, I am from the sheriffs office. We got a call that you have been sexually assualting your goats.. we need you to come downtown for questioning.
These work for sheep (so I’ve heard) I guess they’d work for a goat. Jus sayin...

They sent me 2 Coasties to work for me in Afghanistan my last trip. I looked at and said “ The only water around here is the poo pond!” They were there to do the customs work. Good guys!

Most people think the CG doesn't go to war, but a few of us get it go. I went to Iraq twice. Good times.

The whole time I was reading the OP's story, I thought sure he was telling a joke and I was expecting a punchline at the end. :D
Oh it was real... The punchline was me grabbing a hand full of fuzzy goat balls...

Al, you see or hear any signs of yotes up in area of Pitts? A few friends in Lee have had a couple run ins (didn’t end well for old Wile E. there) around there farms. The yotes were smart enough to not raid until everything had been quite so long the sun was ready to come up ... they final just set leg traps and caught them ... 4 over a week. Those little goats might draw in a yote or two so you may want to think about that and look for pen weaknesses. Also a game cam or two placed around your property is always fun to see what prowls so if you have one or would consider picking up you might see who visits them.

Necro- bump!

Update time... We ended up keeping both boys, but I banded the grey and white spotted one.

The intact boy was named Maurie and the whether goat was named Lester.

About two months later, I got 8 acres professionally fenced in. I created a different thread about that...

Then, a couple days later, I bought 4 young female goats.

My daughters named them: Esmeralda, Swirly Pants, Hungry Goat, and Bramble....

Well, not too long later, Esmeralda and Maurie got it on...

And today, almost exactly 1 year after buying Maurie and Lester, we just had our first baby goats!

It's awesome because my daughters, 7yo and 5yo, had the day off from school! And today is my 5yo's birthday(she turned 6 today) !

Im so glad they were home to see two baby goats born, cleaned up, and nursing... This is why we moved to the country, y'all! This is how I want my kids to be raised!

Here is a pic of two babies, about one hour old. I'll try to take better pics tomorrow!

Please make sure they are getting colostrum from their moms. It’s critical in the first 24 hours.
