Back a couple months ago, I was clearing some brush and got tore up by poison ivy. In the search for a killer, the wife gave me a link for a weed killer that's not a store bought poison and it works really well.
1 gallon of white vinegar
1 cup of table salt
Squish of dishwashing soap.
You have to heat the vinegar to dissolve all the salt, since its stinky I use the camp stove out in the garage.
$14 hand pump sprayer from Lowes.
It might take an application or two, but it killed off the ivy and works great on weeds near a fence line that your getting tired of weed wacking.

How long does it take before you see brown?

homemade and ancient:
And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

I found the same recipe a couple days ago but it called for rock salt vs table salt. It does not discriminate, so you definitely need to be careful to only spray it on things you want gone.

If you look at most weed killers they are some form of salt so not a major surprise it works.

Carthage, at the end of the third Punic war, was sown entirely with salt to poison the ground against future crops. They (conquering Romans) also sold every living being into slavery. Weird how isolated tidbits of nothing stick in my head over the years.

I've used straight vinegar on grass in my greenhouse it takes a few days maybe I'll add the salt and soap next time.

My wife used some baking soda on weeds we had on a walkway. Liberally applied it killed them all.
