This was intense

That was pretty awful. Those officers sure did try everything they could to get that guy to stop before having to shoot him.

That was insane!! That guy carried several rounds and kept coming!

notice how quick he covered that ground and responded after initial shots - shows how much time you actually have to react.
We were shown at B.Oaks how fast a person can cover about 7 yards, and it was scary fast, and even more scary in this video. There will be no time to react (especially for fat old untrained ladies like me) before the guy is on you.

That's something we have done to show people just how little time you have to react. We will have a shooter in position (n0 gun) and one of us old farts standing at the target. The timer goes off and we run to the shooter. That's how quick you need to react. You'd be surprised how quick we can cover the distance. A younger guy hopped up on drugs will be a lot quicker.

practice with 8" targets from 25yds and less, balancing speed with accuracy.

Score rings matter in building shooters confidence, to include situations like this.

Oh, capacity matters.

When I teach my self-defense handgun class I have a drill that teaches you your real reaction time to distance ratio.

It scares everyone how slow they are, to include me.

I was amazed at a few things.

1.) They retreated what looked to be 200 or so yards. I attribute this to the current climate we are in socially. I'm sure they were worried about the "why'd they shoot he was such a good boy who just needed some help"

2.) Holy cow that dude held what looked like 4 to the center mass and then got up and put the other officer in a choke hold.

3.) Effe that taser at that point!

4.) Damn they're lucky to not be hurt more than they were!

5.) This is why magazine restrictions and people saying shoot to wound are ridiculous statements!

You are dead on....... Most police shootings are over scrutinized by the mass media and a bunch of social media drama queens. His partner could have easily gotten killed, but in that situation.....the deceased wasnt going to hurt anyone but themselves. Every situation is different and that showed you dont always have the time to decifer the situation.... I only know to plant my feet, face forward, shoot and i can move from side to side, but i got stumped when the officer ran backwards. Something new to practice.

Mentally ill guy wants to die by cop and not a cop on the scene wants to use his taser gun. No they didn’t do everything they could.

I try to practice moving forward and back and at angles every range session if possible. Its not easy but to me its a must to know how to do

I'm just curious as to what caliber he was shot with at first...9mm? Do you think that's why he was able to get back up? Or, are all police issued a 45? If it was a 9, I believe I'd be looking to upgrade.

I’d say it was more shot placement than caliber. If you look at ballistic test all the common calibers are fairly close when using good projectiles.

I think too many officers presented the guy with easy targets, they could have used the patrol car to knock him to the ground
while he was inside subdivision or towards the end in the street. No question he was suicidal.
Too bad they did not have a LTL shotgun or pepper ball rifle. Seven rounds fired, no doubt the officer did not want to kill him at first exchange.

Appears to be a Glock 17 as service weapon.

They were begging him for his life, as he was telling them to...take his life, insane, what have we come to?

The cop that got the choke hold put on him, notice he was going for gun/taser the whole time the guy was advancing on him. This is where we have trained in FOF to fight. Dude got totally locked on his gun, and not any evade/fight skills. This is why I push so much on learning at least basic hand to hand skills. I wouldn't have had a problem with the first, drop the knife, guy keeps advancing, bang, done, lets go get a ice cream.

One thing to think about ... handguns in about any caliber are really are bottom of the rung in “stopping power” (which is another crazy subject). Unless you hit the central nervous system light switch (the T-zone in the head or the 1 1/2” to 2” with spinal column a human with the will to fight on can continue until the blood loss takes them down (and that could be several minutes). That guy was hell bent on death by cop as well as possible “chemical courage”. I give huge credit to those LEO’s for almost 2 minutes of telling him to comply so aside from that one LEO who allowed the guy to get to close IA doesn’t even need to think about it.

The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight....I'd choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomic bomb instead. - Clint Smith

Things I see that could have been done differently.....

1) Sad to say but they retreated too far and let it go on too long. At a certain point the odds of retreating into a populated area increase. Then he's got targets to force your hand in shooting him and you've got less safe lines of fire.

2) From the camera angles it appeared as if they separated from each other more as they were retreating. Danger of him advancing between them and then turning on one. Again your safe zone of fire gets compromised as your partner is downrange and being attacked. And you're downrange from him.

3) Stickman is right on above. After the first hits the officer that got choked was absolutely focused on bringing his gun to what has become a fist and knife fight. Within those ranges you just made the fight over the gun that's half out of your holster.

I'm glad the officers weren't more injured than they were. I hate they had to shoot him, but they had to shoot him. He wasn't going to let it end any other way.

Thanks for posting. A lot to learn from this....

Yep exactly right. Handguns are not something that will instantly incapacitate unless you his something major like the CNS or some bone structure that wads them up. I've ran plenty of calls on folks who've been shot in various parts of their bodies and they are still kicking and moving around pretty good 10-15 mins after being shot.
