My RIA 1911 9mm is home....

@Millie I admire your determination. I would've cut bait and run already. All my handguns are tools and I don't keep one that I can't trust....... I hope you find a solution(s) to your gun problem(s).
I'm stubborn. lol.

I do have to give it a fair chance to get fixed, but I won't keep this misery going indefinitely. Today was the first range day since I got it back. We'll see how it goes tomorrow and Sunday, with about 200+ rounds each day.

I figure they'll take it back one more time and return it one more time, and then send a new one. Or they might just quit and send a new one. LOL.

Whatever, I expect a working gun the next time I have to send it in, mine or a new one. Or they can pay me what I paid for it and we'll all move on, and I'll be done with RIA. That seems fair to me.

I don't carry this gun since it had its initial issues. I can't trust my life to it. I have a Glock for that now.

I do want a 1911 9mm for a fun range gun though, I love to shoot them. If RIA can't get me set up with one that works, I'll look elsewhere.

Just sell that POS and buy @Geezer CZ 75 SP-01. That might be the best platform for a big 9mm range toy or comp gun. I’m sure he bring it Battery Oaks tomorrow if you asked nicely.

Here is the fresh round failing to load, notice the parallel marks on the case.

I just gave Jenny at RIA the story on the gun's antics yesterday. I told her I'd do a few more things to try and sort it out this weekend. I said I'd let her know how it goes.

And why would I sell someone else a gun that I know has problems? Surely that can't be ethical! If someone did that to me, I'd be real pissed off. LOL.

Anyway, I'll be shooting it today and tomorrow, and we'll see what happens. If Geezer happens to be there, he can surely weigh in with his ideas, but I don't want the whole afternoon taken up with yet more of my gun issues.....B. Oaks is the happiest place on earth to me, and I just want everyone to have a good time and not get deeper into this hole that I call my RIA 1911 9mm!

I think it was mentioned way upthread, there are some fine semi-custom and custom builders who can make a 1911 in 9mm that will run like a sewing machine, but my experience with five different pistols by four different makers from $1500 down to $600, is all of them have some sort of personality disorder, be it the guns themselves, or their inability to play nicely with magazines.

I put up with them because they are so much fun to shoot and because I like to futz with them and change all the pieces and parts, but even a gunsmith who we both know has certain issues with his highly worked over 1911 in 9mm that he runs in matches.

Millie. Obviously I have not shot your RIA, nor do I know what you originally returned it for repair. I’m assuming failure to feed. From the pictures, my thought is the extractor is bit too tight (not properly tuned) and/or has a sharp edge digging into the case as it is camming up and under the extractor.
Yes I understand it is a new extractor. They still have to be tuned to the weapon.

I found out a little about extractors the last time I saw Billy. Interesting things. I'm sure he'll have a look at it tomorrow. You can come shoot it any time you like! When it's behaving, it's such a lovely gun to shoot! LoL.

We'll be testing out different magazines and grains and brands of ammo tomorrow. Different shooters. Different loading methods. Lol. They are fun to shoot, and I love them, but surely 5 failures to feed in 300 rounds is a lot, even for a delicate little flower of a gun like mine?

Mine ran without issue this morning. It is not picky about ammo at all. The mags might be what you need to home in on.

Billy says he'll let me try some of his. Between that and the many, many types of ammo I have, we might be able to get something figured out. LoL.

PS I'm happy yours is going along well....at least today! LoL.

Sorry. Bad joke; latest offering by hipoint they had a naming contest. The New hipoint 9mm will be the yc-9. Officially called a yeet cannon. They are supposed to be reliable, they are cheap.

Thanks! If it's new, aren't we supposed to wait a while before jumping on it? lol.

Lol old c9 with a tactical slide...

I have an old one. It shoots reliably and accurately for me, YMMV.

Totally agree. If you get a CZ or Glock and start having issues you should take up bowling. Can’t f..k up a bowling ball.

I enlarged the picture and I do not see the extractor over the rim.
It seems like billy is on to something.View attachment 137121
Again. hard to tell from that pic, even when I try to enlarge it. But it looks like the case is against the breech face trying to get up under the extractor. As is appears to be started into the chamber this is the time when the round is trying to cam up and go under the extractor....another thought could be a too light recoil spring. Doubtful, but....how far does the extracted and ejected brass fly from the weapon and what direction does it depart the ejection port. Something like 1 o'clock, 3 o'clock or 5 o'clock???

that's a start. These things are machines. With the right parts, properly tuned with the right gas (ammo) they have to run! I chased a failure to feed problem on my race gun years ago for far too long. Tried different mags, mag followers, recoil springs etc. The a Friend at a match told my, you know you have an extraction problem with that gun. Dah!! If the old round can't get out the new one sure can't get in!! New extractor, tuned and bingo...feeding problem was gone. Started carrying a spare, pre-tuned extractor in the range bag after that.

I would like that.....!!!

Dang it, you made me shoot tea out my nose! LOL.
Billy is correct: Nothing that has been in any of my guns should go in any of his guns. There could be possible transfer of gun cooties from my crappy stuff to his nice stuff! LOL. I couldn't live with that on my conscience!!

I really don't think this is a magazine problem...it looks like the round has been feed from the magazine and it trying to get under the extractor and into the chamber. Could be wrong, but I would look at that extractor first. as far as trying different mags in that 1911 or Billy's Colt. My experience with magazines has taught me that a magazine either works in YOUR gun of it doesn't....period. I don't care who made it or how much you paid for it. It works with your set up or it doesn't. It may not work in your RIA, but, you may find it works flawlessly in Billy's Colt. Or vice-versa.

The only other thought is a possible tight chamber. That does happen and is hard to diagnose.
I agree with pfcustom. I don't think it's a mag issue with all you have done with various mags.

I’ve got the same gun as hers, brand new last week, and runs ammo that other more expensive 1911’s won’t run, so I am thinking probably not tight chamber, but that is just a guess.

Unless it is just that much out of spec.

Who can't????

You never met some of the people who work for my customers. They can F up an anvil in the middle of a plowed field with a handful of wet noodles.

@Millie , didn't you let a guy polish the feed ramp on this gun at one of the first range visits, or am I remembering incorrectly.

I do believe Walter polishes feed ramps. I’ve shot with him.

My money is on extractor tuning.

Take slide off, remove barrel. Take "failed" round and see how tight it is to slide under the extractor.

Might just be the case rim thickness differences.
