CA Police Chief left service weapon in restroom and it disappeared. UPDATE

If your opinion is that it's OK to stay other peoples stuff then... yeah.
I never said it was ok. Quite the opposite. It is wrong. Morally. Hope his family called him out and whopped his ass. Should have turned it in. But to be charged with theft and face jail time because some moron of a police asshat left her pistol in the shitter is bullshit.

Her actions and his while directly related are not the same. Yes she left the pistol and it’s her issue. But, him taking it is a complete separate issue.

Take the cop out of it and the same still stands. He stole/misappropriated/took / found and kept the weapon that was NOT lawfully his. That is by definition theft

If he had committed a crime with the Chiefs pistol, should he or the Chief be charged for it?

Both. Him for obviously committing a crime (robbery, murder, etc.) and the chief for gross negligence.

I worked up in NYC in the late 60s in not the best area of town. There was a diner/donut stop frequented by the cops that was believed not to serve extra sauce on the food. I would go for a morning coffee at times. In there one day and cop finished his donut and went in to take a dump. Got seated on the pot comfortably and a kid in the next stall pulled his revolver out of the holster and took off with it. Cop came running out pulling up his trousers and screaming and the chase was on. I was first or second out the door but not nearly as fast as the kid or the cop that caught him. Justice was started right on the street. Surprisingly, this was not the first time or the last that this happened.

What a Charlie Foxtrot! Somebody tell me again convincingly that police are civilians subject to the same laws as are we plebs.

“Stop right where you are! You know the score, pal! If you're not cop, you're little people.”

Thats a hollywood style abuse of power and cover up. Losing a pistol is completely forgivable. Hope she loses her job over the crap she pulled afterward.

Can’t wait to see the settlement amount. This does not surprise me one bit seeing the stuff done around here to cover up for the head sheriff’s son.

Is a head sheriff like a head nurse?

Asking for a friend.

The point is some refer to any officer in a sheriff department as sheriff. I’ll try to do better.
Oh, I wasn’t being serious.

So, defenders of the thin blue line, what say ye now?
Anyone still care to defend the chief or her henchmen?

I've never defended an officer for something like this and never will. They were wrong and should be held accountable for their actions end of story.

Ok so the Chief needs to be terminated and so do the detectives that carried out the illegal search and the DSS lady too. I think someone will end up getting a huge payday.
They basically committed home invasion under the farce of law. They’re lucky.

And we are to just the police? The police are just government sponsored criminals. Why is not every officer involved in the illegal search and detention of a family not suspended?

whoa w t f

The fact she's still got her job is stunning, same for those who helped her in this.
Surprise, surprise. Here in North Carolina it takes a federal charge to get that done. They have no boss.

They serve at the pleasure of the city council. Just ask the Mooresville police chief. Oh you can't, he's suspended awaiting investigation in order to fire him.

Man...where do all these few bad apples keep a'comin from?

I didn’t refer to cities. I was referring to a sheriff. It would be nice if counties could recall or be terminated by county commissioners. Not that commissioners are the ideal authority but at least someone would have overlook.

The thread is about a Chief so forgive my ignorance.

Damn...

If Joe Q. Citizen had lost a weapon, failed to immediately report it, forcefully entered a residence and nabbed two kids, he’d have a whole heap of charges against him and would be locked away for a looooong time.

Two sets of rules, I reckon.

Yet, when citizens express a distrust of LE and base that distrust on stories like this, it is somehow the fault of the citizen.

Not just distrust. We’re beyond distrust. We are at the point where the average, innocent guy, who doesn’t go around doing anything that would commonly be considered criminal may be faced with the lose lose choice of defending himself against a force that heretofore thought was to protect him while they act like street thugs and bullies.

As I asked in another thread, how many incidents do we need before we say enough and put a stop to it?
