Modern Non AR Semi Auto 5.56 Rifles

I’m thinking about a Galil ace myself. I put a M90np up for sale this morning. When it sells I think that’s the route I’m going

If you can find the Sig 551-A1, it is the "more" Swiss version of the 556, and wasn't so much of a turd.

Of all the firearms you listed, my money would be on the SCAR, you'll be hard pressed to beat it. AND, if you had included bullpups in your list, I'd also suggest the Steyr AUG, it makes all other bullpups look/feel cheap (and it's an old design).

So I've decided to start looking around for a new rifles and I kinda decided on a non ar non bullpup semi auto 5.56.

My list is
Bushmaster ACR
IWI Galil Ace
CZ Bren 805
Beretta ARX
FN Scar 16
Robinson XCR
Sig 556

Of those the only ones I'm really interested in are the first 3 and of those the ACR is my favorite and I would have probably bought one already if I didn't have to spend $600 to get a barrel in a proper twist.
The Bren S1 has been discontinued and there has been only a trickle of S2 pistols coming in with no news about import of rifles. The Galil while nice is quite heavy. The ARX looks like a tuna, and the SCAR and XCR are too expensive. And I know nothing about the sig 556

Sounds fun! The Sig is basically just an AR-15 designed without a buffer/ tube, so I wouldn’t recommend that if you are hoping for a major departure from the platform. Does this search require the use of STANAG magazines? Capacity requirements?

Sig 556 is a completely different platform than the AR. It was based off the Sig SG550. I believe you gave it confused with the MCX.

Oh yes you are correct! I assumed “556” meant the caliber of choice, not the model. Looks pretty sweet. However I can’t imagine it costs any less than a SCAR.

I owned one of the 551A1 sbr variants. It was nice, but I didn't like the proprietary mags. Now I run a HK MR556.

How about a 5.56 AK? Might be sacrilege to purists but you could argue in its favor over x39 and good ammo is more readily available than 5.45. I don’t know if they offer a 5.56 chambering, but I’ve heard good things about the palmetto state PSAK despite their hit or miss reputation. I recommend them because the price is affordable... the price will be one of the harder factors in this search for any NotAR

Might sound lame to some but what about the mini-14? Normal capacity mags are available and they are fun

Someone has mentioned it but have you considered Kel-Tec? Check out the SU-16!

Sig 556 is legit bro. Think of it like an AK and a reciprocating charging handle makes sense. I recently put the original handguard back on mine and a Swiss birdcage replica for a different look. The irons have night sights built in. Trigger guard folds. The mags clip together. Just so many cool things.

What iron sights are those? I despised the Sig Sauer version, but the SAN Swiss were great if they weren't weld on.

The 551-A1 SBR I used to own had Aurora Industries sights that were nearly identical to that.

Sadly I think the Auroras are out of production. Most of the aftermarket died immediately when Sig USA pulled the plug on the 556.

These are SAN. Front fits with no modifications. Rear needs the weldment welded on for correct installation. Instead I took the MFi diopter rear sight and put the SAN guts inside. Eventually I’ll weld them on properly. This works perfectly for now, and I can change back to the flat top rail if I want.

They're actually not bad in price and still available. I'm a purist, so if I were to want a Stanag mag, it would have to go in an AR platform and keep the Swiss mags for the Sig.

I never liked the way the stanag mags looked in this gun, so I sold the US lower to help pay for the Swiss lower. Now I’m regretting that, having extra mag options is always smart.

JDI firearms imports the real Swiss guns, but they cost Scar-17 money.

A proper 550 would be awesome.

Back on topic, I’ve been thinking about the Beretta ARX-100. They are not priced too bad.
