Smith & Wesson Inc. announced today that it has introduced the M&P M2.0 Subcompact pistol to its M&P M2.0 pistol series. The latest addition to the M2.0 family, the M&P M2.0 Subcompact pistol features a smaller, subcompact frame that’s ideal for concealed carry. With a 12+1 round capacity in 9mm, the M&P M2.0 Subcompact pistol series includes the full array of M&P M2.0 enhancements. Available in 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 Auto, the M&P M2.0 Subcompact joins the existing Full Size and Compact pistol options that are available in the M2.0 line.

Meh. S&W took the M&P 1.0 Compact frame, used 2.0 texturing on the frame, slapped a 2.0 3.6 slide and barrel on top, and renamed it a Subcompact.

The good news is that the 1.0 Compact magazines live on as the 2.0 Subcompact magazines and the 2.0 grip inserts are available for anyone who wants to use them.

But the bigger news is, they’ve developed a subcompact with one round less capacity than the one that had one more round of capacity.

And it only took them 2 years. o_O

Will it have the customary barrel fitting that causes premature barrel unlock in recoil?

Asking for an irritated 2.0 owner.

No, no - the 1.0 already had an ambi slide release; the 2.0 has the lock to make sure the ambi slide release does not let the slide go forward when you slam in a magazine.

Well, even so. It doesn’t change my point.

scratches head... size wise. This is a capture taken from the blog of crossbreed holsters. They had a write up that was decent.

No, it doesn't change your point and I'm generally being cranky with S&W.

The "new" M&P 2.0 Subcompact is really nothing more than a 3.6 Compact with a reworked 1.0 Compact frame. Given that S&W already had the parts and engineering for the new Subcompact, it is a cheap and logical model for S&W to build.

Regarding @tod0987 excellent comparison of specs for the M&P line, the Shield is 4.6" tall while the Subcompact is 4.3" tall with a flat base plate. Having owned 2-3 Shields in the past and currently a 1.0 Compact, the pistol with a shorter, fatter grip and a 12-round double-stack magazine is surprisingly easier to conceal than the pistol with a longer, slimmer grip and a 7-round single-stack magazine. And, yes, 0.30" less height does seem to make a difference while 0.25" more width does not; go figure.
