Pit Bull Jumps At My Kids

@Silver_Bullet When you going to come shoot another match with us and keep your pistol skills sharp like they were today?
I’ll pay your match fee if you shoot like that at Buccaneer in your unmentionables.

I called the wildlife department and the sheriffs department when I had dog troubles.

They both said the same thing.

SSS

Did the same, except RobCo animal control. They said the same too- and so I did.

I know everybody’s pit bull is sweet and cuddly, but that doesn’t seem to be the norm. The only thing worse than a violent, poorly raised pit bull is its owner. You did what needed to be done. I feel bad for the dog, but think you should bill the owner for the ammo and kids anguish. That whole scene sucks. Good on you for taking care of your kids. They will remember that someday in a better way than they do now.

You did what had to be done OP, and good on you for not hesitating. The dog owner is the only one responsible for what happened to the dog. If they have any others kept under the same conditions, shame on them and it’s only a matter of time before something like this happens again.

Sorry you had to do it, but great job. That situation is completely unacceptable.

Not second guessing you, I'd have likely done the same thing. But how many dogs have you had to shoot down there? Is it the same people? Or am I mixing your situation up with somebody else? Glad everyone is OK.

Glad it turned out well. I would’ve done the same, no doubt.

I’m not a dog person. Been bit 3x as a child. I love my dogs and those that are really well trained/behaved. I won’t hesitate to defend myself from an aggressive dog, I value my safety far more than their life.
My wife and I carry when we are walking the dogs. One never knows when one may encounter a fool that can't control a dangerous dog.
Our dogs think every dog they see just wants to play.

I guess I shouldn't be amazed that a couple of responses here seem to imply that the OP acted with too much force. The "dindu nuffin" mentality obviously extends to some people's animals as much as it probably does their deadbeat children. I love dogs, but that's all going out the door if I see a dog (especially a pit) jumping up and nipping someone, especially my child on my effin property. Good for you OP - you did what a real dad does; glad you children are ok. I love stories with a happy ending!

Not really sure why the breed matters, any dog can be aggressive. Isn’t the dog most likely to bite a weenie dog? I’ve had all kinds of dogs, including a pit bull mix and never once had an issue with aggression.

I love animals but that love ends when they become aggressive towards me or my family. If the animal can’t be controlled then it needs to go.

Might be mixing me up.

I’ve shot 2 dogs in my entire lifetime. The other time was a stray that looked really sick and was acting very strange, wouldn’t let me near him to check him out, became aggressive. 7 years ago maybe. That was more of a humane put down. Didn’t want to risk him spreading anything. I don’t even know if I’ve ever shared that. Possibly have.

I pepper sprayed a pit bull attacking an older black guy riding a bicycle 3-4 years ago. Guy was having to keep the bike between him and the dog. Those neighbors across the main road still live there, and still have the same pit bull tied up in the front yard. I’ve recently had new neighbors move at the end of the street, several pit bulls tied up in the yard. My neighborhood has become a drug haven for both white and black race users / sellers who act uncivilized, add to that some aholes. I’m surrounded. Use to be a decent place. I’m honestly ready to move. Really thinking about selling, moving near the beach’s in Brunswick County or west toward Kanapolis / Concord areas.

It’s more so on the owner than anything.

The breed does matter if the owners neglect, as the breeds instinct kick in. Most dogs fight to submission. Most you can scare into letting them
know you’re the stronger alpha. Pit bulls, some fight to the death, won’t submit.

Now I have a small breed Chihuahua that doesn’t like people, other than family or friends, and I’ve tried training him to be accustomed to others, he weighs 7 pounds. There’s something with that breed making them harder to train. If he was bigger I’d get rid of him due to risk. It takes time for him to trust you, you have to hang around with him. Kids can do anything to that dog, a stranger better not touch him. He won’t bite a stranger unless they try to pet him. He’s kept in the house, walked outside in the yard daily, and locked in another room when we have company he doesn’t know.

I have a lab mix that’s super friendly. We take him for walks on the beach, parks, and elsewhere. Loves other dogs and people.

I have a rescue Chihuahua/Weeniedog mix (honest warren) and almost put her down after the last time she mauled two passerby toddlers and their grandmother to death, but decided to just be more attentive to her and take her off that log chain and she'd straighten out 'cause the internookie says so.

Weenie dogs are damn vicious fighters. Trained to hunt and drag badgers out of holes. They go for the throat when they fight. Mine never bit anyone but she would show those fangs if she didn’t want touched. Rarely trusted anyone for the first 10 minutes then up on the lap when comfortable. But don’t dare try to remove her from under a bed or piece of furniture. Did not play with other dogs. Other dogs beware. Yes I could see them most likely to bite.

I don’t understand people’s hate for pits, but no doubt the right thing was done in this situation.

Chihuahuas man. They're the worst, but they usually don't have the teeth to get through a good pair of boots. I've been bit more times by Chihuahuas or some sort of Chi-mix than any other breed.

That whole scene sucks.
That's what I'm thinkin too.
The kids man. Dadgum. What a thing to have to deal with just all of a sudden outta no-where.
Silver...has to dispatch a dog. Has to. I hate having to dispatch animals. I'm a marshmallow with animals, especially dogs. Might be my least favorite thing to do ever.
The poor damn dog. He didn't choose to be crazy, something drives them there. Way too often it involves upright-walking dirtbags.
He got smacked by an umbrella after that then he calmed down.
We call that the Mary Poppins.

It's breedism, plain and simple. ;)

I am glad the younglings are okay. I don’t blame you one bit. I don’t play around or risk it when it comes to my kiddo or my wife.

Umbrellas work surprisingly well for most breeds. They start snapping at you, just deploy it and it usually freaks them out. If it doesn't, most are too dumb to get around it and you can use it as a shield. Doesn't work with Pitts.

You need to make friends with a 1% group, have them hang out at your house on a daily basis. They will run the sellers and buyers out. I grew up on the border block between the ghetto and the good neighborhood, in the big city, real ghetto. Had a 1%er clubhouse across the street, my block was the safest block on both sides of the line.

People don’t like to admit that pit bulls can be dangerous.

I’ve got 2. I’ve been bit. The dogs got in a fight and I got a nice bite trying to break it up.

They are powerful dogs. They have a strong bite and can run faster than any human.

I have a 6 foot fence in my backyard and they don’t get left out there unattended. I know they can be dangerous. Pretending they aren’t isn’t gonna help the way people view the breed.

I love these dogs, so I’ll do what I can to keep them out of trouble.

^Right, at one time they were good dogs. The breed was forever ruined awhile back.
APBTs came into existence as a result of breeding for pit fighting. They were bred for various traits, including game. It's in their genes (sound familiar?).

That gameness is what makes them particularly dangerous. Unlike non-game dogs, game dogs ignore pain and fight until they are dead or their victim is dead.

So in a sense, they were never good, as in trustworthy around children and dogs they aren't well socialized with.

That said, the demographics of pit bull ownership compounds the problem. The demographic is very different from, e.g., Labrador or German shepherd owners.

ill definitely agree they were bred to select certain traits; it went on so long there are no more "good" dogs and even the good ones have a tiny bit of bad. For example the child victim I mentioned earlier.. it was a loving family pet for 14 years and then just snapped one day. It tapped into that >1% of genetic ruination they all have.

ill also agree they tend to be owned, not always, by a certain kind of folk.

im not going to bite (pun) on the 'sound familar' though :)

I had a neighbor who did pit bull rescue. He had some very sweet dogs. I’ve also known some really bad ones. I don’t prejudge someone who chooses to own pits, but it is not a breed I would choose to have around my family.

Good on ya, @Silver_Bullet.

I’ve had several and I think they’re awesome little dogs. They will definitely hold their ground though. Mine have always been very smart and very loyal.

image.png Ive had a few Pits, they have all been sweet an affectionate to the pack. The thing about then is they're spirited which is a good trait when in check. They don't back down from a challenge.

I had a 40 pound Amstaff split the ear of a Great Dane once when the Dane thought he would hip check her and assert dominance. The same one would attack the weed eater even after she caught it once and it bloodied her mouth.

The fact is that if you experience any drama within the pack the pit will be neck deep in it. You need a strong pimp hand if you plan on getting one.
