So, with all the upheavals one of my biggest problems between eating right and not is about to be solved. Most of the time from shortly onwards I'm going to cooking for just me. No more having to avoid crap the kids won't eat, or spices, or all the other stuff bland palates require.

This seems like a perfect opportunity to eat better, since I am about to be back at work full time and eating lunch needs to be a thing. Since it will be nights, I'm going to do my damnedest to take leftovers for lunch rather than eat Sheetz or something all the time, since that gets pricey and fills me with crap.

Now there's been so many diet fads and ways and such that I'm totally out of date. Also, I figure whatever you guys are doing may just work for me since you're real people and not some hipster who gets paid to BS about what they eat and just slims down with nose candy. My general preference would be for something low carb, since while I will miss my carbs badly they are what is larding me up like a blimp and where most of my empty calories come from. Left to my own devices I eat a lot of beans (esp. black), eggs, bacon, pork and chicken.

I'm happy to eat veggies too, even the stuff a lot of folks won't like spinach and such. Breakast is probably going to be eggs and sausage if I'm not being paranoid about good honest fats. I always take butter over margarine and have felt much better for it.

I learned not to just eat breakfast for every meal last low carb, when the entire world fell out my arse over a long and horrific day, so this time I will have to find some sort of grease trap bulking food!

They're building a Planet Fatness in Eden near work, so I'm planning on joining there (or getting roped into the Y family plan, not sure yet) so I can do some calorie burning, got that part covered. It's just which Way of the Food to go with.

Does this sound like anyone's working plan? I'm always better with simple, some of these diets are bloody mad complicated.

I’m all about a binary decision to start, so no carb. I start most days with a veggie omelette, hot sauce and maybe bacon on the side. Not uncommon to eat a salad with steak or chicken around 4. No supper. Coffee in the morning, otherwise water.

i’ve been pretty much incapacitated for a week with a bad back. Have lost 9 lbs. it ain’t perfect, but it’s better than eating crap and gaining 9.

Calories. Calories are everything you need to know about dieting. Burn more than you eat you loose weight. Burn less you gain. Calories don't care where they come from be it pasta or steak.

Exercise will help keep the weight in the places you want it buts my doctor tells me, once you hit a certain age it's 90% diet and 10% exercise .

I've lost 60 pounds this year by eating less. Cereal or light breakfast and a huge salad before every dinner.

Congrats!

Different things for different people. Saw a study a coup,e months ago that said that which plan you pick is far less important than picking one.

Consider following a type 2 diabetic meal plan, smaller portions, watch the carbs, eat four times a day.
No expensive food subscriptions needed or gym memberships.

No I need the gym, I'm as hard as a jelly baby

As mentioned up thread, it's mostly depends on how much energy you consume. Major take away is you can't outwork a bad diet.

I am a fan of intermittent fasting, and target a minimum 12 hour fast Monday through Friday. I don't worry about it on the weekends. My first meal of the day is at 10AM, so I need to be done eating by 10PM the night before, even earlier is ideal. Black coffee and green tea won't "break" a fast, and I consume those along with water in between meals. I also won't consume calories unless protein is involved, and I won't snack. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but it's been simple and effective for me. I can go into more detail if anyone if interested.

Cooking is an important part of eating half way decent for me. I also like to eat foods that help optimize testosterone levels.

@NCLivingBrit, see edit above and below.

Working security at a hospital could be an excellent opportunity to increase activity levels... Walking indoors and out, climbing stairs, etc. Hopefully they won't have you stuck somewhere stationary. Be mindful that if you are carrying extra weight, higher impact activities may need to be avoided until some pounds come off.

What do you do all day, if you don't mind me asking? Some people respond better to low intensity but very long "work outs." I put it into quotation marks because you can work little things into mundane activities. If you're hanging around the house 8 hours a day I can send you some ideas.

I lost over 30 pounds last year and kept it off*

You're gonna have to change the title of this. Everytime I cruise three the new post, I keep seeing

"Lady brit seeks meat filled diet"

I click on it thinking it something in Chad's basement.

Right now either bone idle or sweating blood moving stuff from storage to storage.

After the end of the month I'll be a security officer at a hospital.

I did rather well last time I got to gym regularly. I'd treadmill until I ran out of gas, go work the arm machines a little, then back to the treadmill then home.

I got stuck in breakfast for every meal because eggs and bacon last time. Hence my sudden volcanic diasblement lol
With Keto you are going to be doing more fats then proteins, they will fill you up a lot faster than most anything else you can eat. If you do keto right you almost can’t help but lose weight.

Yeah that's looking to be the way I'm going.

I've just got to figure out which beans I'm allowed.

I've just got to figure out which beans I'm allowed.

To my knowledge, you will be allowed very few beans. You have to be careful with nuts because certain kinds are good and others are bad but consume the good ones in moderation.

Drink lots of water and I mean lots. Also, some people complain of constipation but in fact they are not. Their bodies are simply are not creating that big ole carb waste that it used to do.

I try to limit my carbs to 20 or so on a daily basis. However, I do allow myself a cheat day once or twice a month so I can eat some carbs. Thing is, when I do I inevitably feel like crap the next day.

If you have a smart phone, get the apps My Fitness Pro or My Plate. These will help you keep tabs on what you eat and figure out what the nutritional value of everything you eat or want to eat. Question everything you eat.

Beer and wine is out unless you drink something like Mic Ultra (2.6 carbs per serving) but even then, you will find you may not be willing to trade having those carbs for something else. You can have hard liquor though, no carbs.

Basically, if it is white you can’t have it. Flour, rice and sugar.

The only dairy you can have is butter and heavy whipping cream, again no carbs.

Good luck!

Since my work is mostly in a barn, at least 5 hours a day, I get a decent workout. I eat a power bar with coffee before I go to the barn in the morning, eat a light breakfast at lunchtime, go back to the barn at 4:30 for an hour to feed their dinner, and cook a decent meal ( mostly soups in the winter) and back to the barn at 11 PM to toss more hay and clean stalls for another hour. I eat pretty much what I want, keep the candy/desserts to a minimum, and take dance classes twice a week (sometimes more) for two hours each class. A lot cheaper than a gym and have met many interesting people. When your body gets use to a certain work load sometimes you have to do something else to increase your exercise in a way the body is not accustomed to.

I also forgot to mention, there is a thing called net carbs. Some “experts” believe in it, some do not. Basically, the idea is if you eat something with say 15 grams of carbs per serving but it has 5 grams of fiber, the net carbs would be 10 grams.

I dunno, but I do like the idea of some fiber.

I'm with you my friend. Fiber is good for quite a few things that keep the machine in check and running smoothly.

That I was already familiar with from the first Atkins to try that led to the rectal volcano.

As for the activity thing, work should have me on my feet a lot and I'm thinking about building a little log cabin/dugout hybrid down the hill from the yard. Waiting to see about logging companies and where they want first, but cutting and hauling those logs and building it should be a workout. Never mind digging the hole.

I did intermittent fasting, combined with Keto because it worked for my life style at the time but it sounds like, with your work load, you will need to add some electrolytes to the mix. I made the mistake of not doing that and ended up on the kitchen floor due to a lack of water and essential minerals. Lol.

Well it's indoor work so I should be ok. At least until summer.

@NCLivingBrit

One thing that helped me reset some of my high sugar eating/drinking habits, was a three day fast. I just consumed water plus some salt.

It may be worth looking into. Full disclaimer, I am not a medical professional. Do your research.

Keto is the way.

Please stop calling it Keto. It's Atkins. They call it Keto so they don't have to give the man credit. Actually KETO is even more aggressive than atkins. I never introduced to many more carbs when doing Atkins so I was doing KETO before KETO was a thing.

EDIT: back to being a fatazz anyway

Atkins focuses on high protein, Keto focuses on high fats, slightly different methods to low carb, there are several low carb diets out there that are not exactly Atkins. Easy to get confused though.

I can drop the sugar more easily than the chips and bread. Salty snacks are my go-to splurge food. Hence the bellies.

Exactly! What he said, it is all about the fat. In fact, one needs to limit the intake of protein.

This sounds like an excuse to buy a whole side of bacon.....

Oh yeah. We eat a lot of bacon in our house. Save that bacon grease and ditch all oils except for olive & avocado oil.

Mostly I use butter for frying etc. I quit margarine a while back and immediately felt better for it. That stuff is nasty.

I was planning on saving bacon grease, it makes everything taste better after all.
