I am having a heck of a time deciding on a 10mm.

The primary application will be for protection in the woods & maybe some whitetail hunting (if the correct situation presents itself). The only other time I will likely shoot it is at the range.

Candidates (but will listen to other suggestions)
Glock 40 MOS with the intention of adding a red dot style optic
Ruger Super Redhawk with the intention of likely adding a scope
Sig P220 Hunter (low on my list due to price & it is not as easy to add an optic, other specs look great though)

Considering my desired uses, does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

I'd like to keep this limited to the 10mm (in other places, I have asked this question and it derailed into the merits of 10mm vs 44 mag & the overall practicality of handgun hunting)

Thanks!

The G40 MOS is a nice gun. Easy shooting, IMO, even with 'legit' 10mm loads. I liked my buddy's a bunch, though the grip's a bit bigger than I like. Super Redhawk is cool, but HEAVY & overkill for a 10mm. Glock'd be easier to pack/hump & work just as well for hunting.

Springfield XD-M 5.25" 10mm might be worth checking out.

My only experience with a 10mm is a 1911.Glocks don't fit my hand either.
I don't "need" a 10mm but the price of a Ruger SR 1911 or a RIA is tempting. An XDm is food for thought as well.I love my m in 9mm.

I have read in at least two places that the Ruger 1911 had a few hiccups when shooting hot 10mm loads (but that's just what I have read & have no clue of the specifics). I like the 1911 platform & Ruger's price also. If I find a nice 10mm for hunting, I might just pick up the Ruger 1911 for range fun!

Forgot about the XD
I think @Tim picked one up a while back. Maybe he'll chime in here, too

I have three completely different 10mm handguns. The Dan Wesson full size 1911 with 5" barrel is a Very Nice Gun that choots the lights out. The S&W full size 1026 with 5" barrel is slightly larger, and another Very Nice Gun that choots the lights out. The S&W N-frame Model 610 with 4" barrel is an Incredibly Nice Gun that choots the lights out and keeps you from chasing brass.

For hunting, I would use any of them. But I won't, because I hunt with a scoped 7.5" Redhawk 45 Colt... oops! Sorry!

BTW, you simply can't beat the RIA prices, and they have Commander length 1911s in 10mm!

I’ve got a single stack RIA 10mm that I love. Never had an issue with it, but I admittedly don’t shoot it much.

I did, and really liked it. But traded off to @Jayne for a .45ACP version.

and Jayne is happy with it.

I'm not a Glock fanboi but I do compete with them and carry one. However, I do not care for the general ergos of the larger frame 45/10mm Glocks at all. I mean they're fine, and if I had one I wouldn't dump it to get something else, but since I was going for a new caliber that would not be fired 1000s of times like everything else I went with something I knew I liked the ergos on better. The large XDm is just a little easier for me to hang on to. I don't have trouble with the glock or 1911 grip angle thing that many get wrapped around the axle about. I can shoot either, and honestly I can't even tell you which the XDm has.

Just last week I found the perfect holster for $37 OTD from the LGS. The Safariland, uh, whatever there 'generic' line is that fits everything. The wide/long version fits without the shim. Got it adjusted and it it's awesome. Retention is deactivated by your hand hitting the lever when you get a firing grip so no finger stuff and you don't even know it's there. I wanted retention because I'll be carrying this while riding around on a quad for days on end and wanted it to stay put. The holster looks long, but the gun goes alllll the way down there. Muzzle sticks out about 1/16" or so. There may be a wide/short version of this that would let the pistol stick out but with the fiber front site I figured no reason not to protect the whole thing.

Underwood makes a 200gr hard cast load that's putting out 704 ft lbs. of energy from the 5.25" barrel. That's a whole lot of grunt at 15+1 in a package that can be controlled.

I was pricing some 10mm brass and whatnot to reload for it, and it's actually cheaper to buy plinker 10mm rounds and fire them for the brass vs. buying once fired or new and reloading it. Once you've got the brass you're good, but I'm still seeing once fired for 16 cents, then stick a 18 cent projectile on there and even without labor/powder/primer you're over the 30 cents it costs to get new from outdoor limited. You can't go cheap on the bullets and use Berry's, they have a speed limit of 1250 fps and we're going way over that. :) I'm sure someone has a line on cheap brass, but it's not me.

I have three, two ria 1911s, one in 5 inch and a commander in4.25 inch barrel.
Saw a 5 inch in the lgs and I believe it was 579.00 new.
Can't say enough good things about the Ria's, for price function and accuracy .
For the third I have the Ruger gp100 in 10mm, a little pricey, but I wanted a revolver in ten, some people say the moon clips are a drawback but I just consider them free speed loaders

Hard to beat the 1911 platform for that round.

I don't know about adding a scope but the GP100 10mm is a reasonable size revolver for 10mm and cheaper than a redhawk.

Personally, the Glock is unbeatable in price and capacity to me. But I am a fanboy...

Being a wheelgun guy, I'd be all over the GP-100 in 10mm if I were inclined to add another non-mainstream chambering to feed. Not knocking the round at all, but I dove down the .41Mag rabbit hole a while back, as well as .357Max, so I've got the mid-b0re sledgehammer thing pretty covered.

ETA- Weigand does "Weigatinny" no D&T mounts for the GP-100. No experience with 'em, but the same mount for the Ruger single actions is supposed to be GTG, up through warm .480 Ruger from a Super Blackhawk.

Can it readily accept a red dot optic or would work have to be done to it?

I’ve got a Rock Island double stack (can’t remember the destination they use). Very solid for the price.

Tangfo has quite a few 10mm offerings. Been eyeing one of these beauts...

I got a Kimber Super Jagare when they were first released and it shoots good

It’s sole purpose is geared towards hunting and it’s equipped with a Deltapoint and no irons. It’s also ported and that helps some

I also have a good load recipe for anything from a G40- this Gun that runs hotter and expands like no one’s business. 180 Gold dot, and Blu Dot powder

Great guns, sort of flying under the radar, many know nothing about them. Do they make a non rail version, leather is very hard to find for most “off brand” railed guns.

Here’s a link at Sportsman’s Guide site...I’m sure they make other models. Looks like a few are non-railed. Tangfo has a big following in the gun gaming world (3 gun, etc) so there are likely some kydex holsters out there, but likely not in leather. This link was filtered on 10mm Tangfoglios...

OP should visit the local. Glock 40 is a hunking big gun to tote around. Not worth the weight. 10 mm in a Redhawk or any revolver makes no sense to my aging brain, when 44 mag is more available and more powerful in a hand canon. I got the Glock 20 for the capacity, reliability and especially lowest possible weight. It is accurate and no painful recoil, like a Redhawk. Not a bikini body to admire and feels awkward and crude for sure. But it works good, shitty trigger and all. You can shoot .40 S&W safely in a pinch as well. Not so in other autos. Compact for what it is. I had to file the finger nubs off mine before I could even shoot it, though. What ape do they model it after? Painted the front sight safety vest green, blacked out the rear. It jumps on target fast. If only it had an M&P grip? Aw well. They all have their own peculiar issues to choose around.

I do not necessarily disagree with your points but in terms for the Glock 20 vs 40 - I would assume the Glock 40's barrel lenth is going to make this better for hunting applications. Is it a big & heavy gun, yes it is, but with my current style of deer hunting, I will be still hunting most of the time. I do wish it could be lighter but I assume the barrel length and weight is going to help with accurate shooting & that is going to be critical for the intended application.

I have seen a lot of similar comments about the Super Redhawk chambered for 10mm. It doesn't make sense to a lot of folks & and I am not convinced that it makes sense to me either. I have owned a 44 mag version. It seems like the 10mm version would give you the advantage of less recoil and the ability to easily mount a scope.

Compact & conceal-ability is not an issue due to the fact that it will be a woods gun.

That Kimber looks nice. Thanks for opening my eyes to that one. How do you like it?

They make a version that has an optics mount system (as well as a threaded barrel and suppressor height sights) but mine isn't any of that.

Maybe I am missing it but I haven't ran across that version. If you see it, can you drop a link to me? Looks like a nice handgun.

I didn't even know that existed! Nice barrel length for my intended applicated. Could a red dot easily be mounted to that one?
You can go with a mount like this... You remove the rear iron site and this plate slides into its place. Then the red dot mounts on the plate...

https://www.egwguns.com/viper-venom-gi-1911-sight-mount-fits-burris-fastfire-and-docter

Or you can go with a new rail that mounts to the bottom rail, but then creates a new top rail, like this...
