First Gun: Ideas from the crowd wanted

I was thinking a S&W 15-22. Cheap ammo, can run it like an AR, with same controls. Either way, if you go the AR build route, I'll kick in some 223 for ya boy, and if ya go with a 22, I'll do the same for some 22 ammo. Awesome of you to do this.

I like the help me build this, now it’s yours approach!

For my eldest’s 13’th birthday party 16 years ago, it’s still talked about. We had a local gent that makes primitive bows, arrows and heads from flint came and give a class for a bunch of boys. At the end, MUCH, to our surprise he gave a fantastic bow to my son as a present. That encouraged him so much he started making his own, made all sorts of tools, sent him into engineering, and is/was the youngest to ever graduate NCSU ME program at 19.
Go for it!
A 10/22 build is also a great idea.

I bought my new granddaughter a CZ455 .22 WMR. I’m keeping it here until she can learn to shoot it. She’s only 8 weeks old so there’s that. That’s a great and fun, not to mention cheap to shoot gun that he will enjoy his whole life.

@B00ger , if I buy an SKS for myself, would y'all clean the cosmoline off for me? Ya know, for learnin' experience.

Believe it or not, I actually enjoy it. I like the smell and enjoyed cleaning up the few mosins I’ve owned on and off!

1st gun IMO should be one of the following:

CZ 22 LR Bolt gun
Ruger 10/22 w/ upgrades

S&W Model 17 22lr
Ruger Mark IV 22LR
Ruger 22/45

CZ 75 9 mm
Glock 17 or 19 9mm

5” 45acp 1911

12 awg Shottie

30-30/ 35 Rem Lever Action

May have missed something, but one of those would work.

I’m avoiding pistols due to his age. And he is basically a grown man, so even though .22s are awesome, I want him to have his very own range toy and boogaloo blaster.

Awesome! My boys graduated EE and CS from NCSU at 19 too :)

My current thought was to order a parts kit from PSA (I picked his brain a bit on what kinda styles of ARs he likes) and invite him over to help me put it together. Then take him out to the range to zero it in. When he is about to leave pull a "Oh, by the way...you can have this."

I had my nephew put together his own AR15 for his birthday. I think I only put on the flash hider and the barrel nut because he didn't know what a torque wrench was.
I decided we'd do 16" mid length gas, all FDE with free float and magpul stocks. It's made of Aero sale and blem parts (we built rifles together and i gave him the better of the blems) and a BA barrel. His first time shooting I loaned him a cheap red dot optic and he knocked the paint off my 8" steel targets at 100 yards.
I was also going to surprise him by letting take home "my" rifle that he built for "me", but his parents spoiled it for me when I asked that they were okay with it. He has a father, but they run a church and don't have much spare money. His dad brought his own AR that range day and we all had a blast.
It's 100% HIS because HE built it from parts. Even caught a takedown pin detent in his glasses and put a few dings in the lower when putting all the parts in - just like the rest of us :)

based upon all the above, regardless of caliber or model:

1. put it together, together.
2. engrave something, somewhere.
3. include lots of appropriate ammunition.

I’m looking into engraving, somewhere close to the Triad

That is a great idea. I got into shooting in my 20's, and I shoot a .22 less than anything else. While it is fun it isn't the same. If I had my own range in my backyard that I could spend all day at that would probably be different, but alas I do not.

Agreed, if he and I had the chance to shoot whenever we wanted a .22 to blow thousands of rounds through would make sense. As it is, we maximize our pew time.

I don't have much space, and i'm already probably breaking some of the distance laws... but I still jut built a 10ft long sawhorse to use as a steel target hanger. I figure if I hang the targets pretty low, I can be shooting at enough of a downards angle that I won't have to worry about much. Neighbors don't seem to care right now...

That seems like a good boy I’m sure he would be happy continuing shooting your firearms. Get him a marlin.22 and let him plink away .

I like the AR idea. The reason is that he can then modulate the uppers for .22 conversion, or longer barrel for longer range precision. Plus building it together is something that is unique pretty much to the AR (and AK) platforms.

Gettin a little stuffy in my house... makes my eyes water, it must be the weather change..

Start with this Ruger model ... correct barrel profile for the Liberty Kit plus threaded barrel just for possible future add ons ... rimfires loved to be suppressed
https://ruger.com/products/1022Carbine/specSheets/31113.html

... this kit along with adding the sling and sight options like Jim mentions is a nice little M1 Carbine tribute too ...
https://www.eabco.net/M1-Carbine-Re...sion-20--Includes-TWO-Handguards_p_13774.html

... the Appleseed experience would add even more “feelings” to the little carbine that he’d as well as you would always remember.
This is exactly what I was going to suggest, a 10/22 dressed up like a M1 carbine.

But, I might like the SKS idea better. Tell him you ran into a deal on a couple of SKS's still in the cosmoline, and could use his help cleaning them up. Then, after the cleaning, tell him to choose one for himself.

I like the "Help me build your rifle" thing - that's a good idea but it doesn't incorporate his love for history and milsurps.
I say watch Enemy at the Gates with him and when the movie is over, hand him a Mosin 91/30 with 5 rounds on a stripper clip.

I did exactly this for my son's birthday many years back. Got him the sniper model with the correct scope.

Along the milsurp line you could also get him a nice commercial M1 carbine like a Plainfield, etc. Anything but a Universal.

You know the give a man a fish thing, so teaching him to fish, he not only ends up with a nice ar, but the ability to build more as he gets older.

...but sometimes it turns out like this. :D

I like the idea of an ar build. I let my brother pick the parts and we built one together for his 18th birthday. Make it more personal for him by picking out the individual parts and have the lower engraved, I believe it would mean more in the long run than anything else.

shotgun? 870 maybe? Not as much fun to shoot, but still a great first gun and home defender. I still have the old double barrel my gpa gave me when i was 5. Either way you go i imagine he'll be appreciative.
Great group of guys on this forum, reading this thread made me smile:D
