I just got a 6.5 creedmoor. I plan to use it for hunting and maybe getting into a little long range shooting fun. Im looking at the Vortex Diamondback Tactical ffp 4-16x44mm to put on top. Is this a good choice or should i be looking at something else?

I chose the Athlon Cronus BTR after first using a Vortex Razor HD 5-25x50.

In my opinion, Vortex is very good but I love my Athlon scope. I trust it more than anything else and I find it to be incredibly intuitive to use for long range shooting and transitioning from target to target.

The Diamondback Tactical line is a good choice in your price range. What are your usual target distances?

That's a good option. However, I would consider a little higher magnification if you don't have a great spotting scope to start, for long distance target shooting.

The 6.5Creedmoor has outstanding ballistics with respect to wind drift. Trust me when I say that you'll be extending your comfort distance at least 200-300 yards with this rifle. With practice, you'll be very comfortable with making clean shots at 500+ yards 100% of the time. I can guarantee a clean shot (within 6") out to 600 with my .308, and I expect to cut that down to 4" with a 6.5 that I'll be buying this year.

My target range of magnification for the hunting/target rifle is 5.5-22x56, as you'll want low power for hunting up close.

Yup in that price range they are a good option. Good features and an excellent reticle in the EBR-2C. I have that reticle in a few scopes and it's great for holds and calling quick corrections.

For hunting there are amazing options from Meopta, Hawke & Athlon. It would be my pleasure to discuss options with you
Call Doug and talk through some options. The recommendation for Meopta is a good one and he’s running some killer deals right now. I just picked up a couple from him and very pleased with them. One is replacing a Swarovski Habicht 3-12x50 that is going back on a hunting rifle for the kids to use next season. The other is replacing a Leupold VX3i on my dad’s 700 in 270. The Meopta glass outperformed both in resolution and last light out to about 300y, which is about as far as I had available at the time. I was looking at a garden flag in someone’s yard. With the Swaro, I could see the shape of the flag and definitely see it moving in the wind. With the Meopta, I could still make out the pattern on the flag, which wasn’t discernible through the Swaro. Very good scopes.

If you aren't going to be dialing but using hold overs for distance just about any scope listed will work, regardless I would get a "Christmas tree reticle" like EBR-2c. Diamondback would be what I would run

If dialing for elevation, I would not own a Athlon. When it came to dialing, I've seen more people have issues with repeatability than any other scope on the market. Granted, I haven't shot LR competition in a year and fell of what's "new" in the sport in the last 6 month. Maybe things have chance for them, I'm not totally sure. I have had Nightforce, Vortex and SWFA. I currently have 2 Razor Gen II, Gen I and few PST, NF Atac, SWFA on my 22 trainer. I know these are above your budget but when it comes to dialing, it's all bout repeatability.

If you are zero at 100, with a velocity of 2800fps, with a good bullet at 600 yards your dope will be around 3.7 mils at 60 degrees with a air density of 800ft.

I agree with the Christmas Tree reticle for competition for making quick adjustments without having known distances. Time is your enemy for matches.

The viper pst worth it over the diamondback tactical?

The PST Gen II are a step up from the Diamondback Tactical but it also depends on your price range. If the Diamondback is your range then go that route but if you can swing the Gen II then you will get a better optic with nicer features.

Thanks just checked it out. I like the elavation rotation counter feature with the shims to help you get back to 0

I agree. I actually had that exact Gen I PST and it served me well. I had it on 3 or 4 rifles and it tracked great. The 6-24 with the 2C is a steal for the $500.

Thats a good price. Looks like a great scope but im leaning towards a first focal plane. But i do really like the illuminated reticle.

You are not going to find FFP and be repeatable and rugged for $500. Something has to give.

Are you going to be ranging with the reticle?

While I always push ppl to FFP, this deal is hard to beat.

Unless you go with something like a fix 10x

If you’re wanting FFP, also keep an eye out for a used Athlon Ares. I just got in a 2.5-15 with FFP Christmas tree reticle that I paid tree fiddy for off of another forum. I was quite surprised by the glass though I had read up about it for a while.

I would still highly recommend that you give Doug at Cameraland a call. I’ve talked with him and Neil a few times and was a little shocked to see him join up on CFF since it is a smaller local forum (though glad he did). He just dropped the Bushnell specials on his website and they may also fit your needs.

I’ve been a member here and the previous forums that shall not be mentioned for a long time...I don’t shill for anyone but I’ll speak up for a good guy and a good business (like Jason), and Doug fits that category.

And to add to what @Djstorm100 said above about dialing with the Athlons. I agree. I’ve not used the Cronus, which is their top end scope and out of your targeted budget, but the Ares is the next in line I believe. I’m not blown away with the turret feel, though I do like the zero-stop. The used I just got is a gen 1 with the updated turrets. No clue how they stack up to the gen 2.

I’d say if you plan to dial, the Athlon wouldn’t be my first choice. Mine is now set up on a Tikka Tactical 223 which will be shot under 500y. I don’t need to dial for that.

I just sold off a Mk5HD and also looking glass for my Tikka CTR in 6.5cm which will be about the same use as yours...open field hunting but mostly range time. The Meopro 3.5-10 that I just got went on my RAP in 6.5 that is being chopped to 16.5” for a dedicated woods gun, which is what I mostly hunt. Curious to see what you choose for yours, OP.

For $500 the Gen I PST is a good deal and that one IS FFP so he gets FFP for $500. Right under main title:

EBR-2C Reticle - MRAD - First Focal Plane
Tactical Turrets w/CRS Zero Stop

And you know FFP has nothing to do with ranging ;)

LOL, I literally saw the add and though "Great scope for the OP" I never read it for FFP or SFP... Now I may just buy another one...LOL

Not to be contrary, but Optics Planet is located in Northbrook, Illinois. Northbrook is not a 2A friendly town. I loathe giving money to the grabbers when I can help it. That said, I'm sure I have without knowing at some point in my life, probably more than once.
Additionally, Optics Planet does not stock anything. They rely on vendor stock so frequently have inaccurate inventory levels shown on their website. I've been around this game long enough to have heard many complaints from brothers in Illinois who found they tied up funds for a product on indefinite backorder. I've also heard many stories of success shopping there. YMMV.
