With the latest church shooting in Texas. Bad guy pulls and points a shotgun at Guy #1. Guy #1 is armed and draws from concealment from what looks like small of the back. He has less then 3 secs and is shot while presenting his gun. He drops immediately. Guy #2 (unarmed) is shot next. Guy #3 draws and drops bad guy with head shot from about 50' within 6 secs from bad guy bring shotgun up.

Now get out there and practice, practice and practice the wizard!!!! Prayers to the men who fell and their families. Evil walks among us.

Really?? The Great Wizard wouldn't have saved you in that situation....

While it's easy to be the Monday morning quarterback, I'm going to refer to the man that was shot while drawing his gun. If he was on the security detail, why was he sitting down? Was he not healthy enough to stand? Was he complacent?

It is very sad that good people lost their lives by just doing routine, everyday things. We may not say it out loud but many think "that would never happen here." It always happens somewhere else, not here. Well, it did happen in a small town that no one had heard of in Texas. Before yesterday, I'm sure that many of them thought "that would never happen here." Yesterday, their lives changed forever.

As time passes without an incident everyone becomes complacent, lazy and out of "position". The other thing I noticed was that it seems everyone with a gun was on the left side of the room, no one came into view from the right side of the screen. Maybe everyone was "visiting" instead of being on guard. Another observation is that everyone came from the rear of the room, no body was in front or in the middle.
Less than stellar gun handling was to be expected since everyone there was scared out of their mind and most were unsure of what action to take, fight or flight. The end outcome was great but it almost happened by accident not planning.

You're right - The Wizard is a test only. If you train with the Wizard drill you'll face your target, pause, draw and fire without moving. As you can see in the video, when the wizard shoots back you better have something else going on besides the drill.

I'm getting complacent since I no longer have a group to practice with. I'm glad it wasn't my turn that day because I might have reacted the same way.

2.5 seconds is under 3. At times its 1.5 secs from start to draw and place bullet on target. Means nothing however if you're not vigilant and observant.

Give up @Combat Diver, the rest of us have. This blow hard is a lost cause. I like you have been thinking about this all day.

It IS only a test. It's practice to put rounds on target from concealment. Once you DO it then try it moving or standing on your head. OR don't try it, sit on here and pound keys and blow off about how useless it is. What is the alternative Not train?? When some Trainer-Tactician comes up with a way to do training for REAL please let us know!

Whether anyone thinks the wizard drill is good or bunk doesn't matter. Don't like it, or think it's junk, move on, do what YOU think is gold, and what you think will prepare yourself to draw from concealment and get good, solid hits QUICKLY. All I know, is it's made me get quicker drawing from concealment, and getting that ever so critical first shot off in a solid, good hit. I even practice sitting in a chair, being as I carry appendix, it's crucial for me to know I don't have to stand up to "get after it". I have ran just the first part of the drill on friends who say "that's not too hard", just get the gun out from concealment, make a solid head shot one handed, in under 2.5 seconds, shooter ready, beep, and they fail. Oh what was that, the damn timer added some stress, yeah, and I say, what kinda stress you gonna be in when the SHTF????" Again, do what YOU feel works for you, us over here, will be doing what WE feel works for us.

I just don't get it. This attitude some have that practice/training/skill development somehow does not benefit a gun user in "the real world'. It's so incredibly stupid.

Same guys that think MMA skill won't help you in a "street" fight, I guess.

It's a truly bizarre notion.

2.74 yesterday with my g19. I posted in another thread but couldn’t find this one. 1DCFE130-FE27-4D77-AF6F-35DDB3C6A1EC.jpeg

This morning was a 2.70. I made a video but it was over three minutes of me turning the camera and such. Figured I could look back and see what I could work on form wise. 335C743E-37C4-4DB5-A967-CD24F7992442.jpeg
Here’s the video, I figured I’d post it so I could make sure I was doing it correct. Tomorrow I’m hoping to post a video in another thread so here goes. This is my first YouTube video sorry for the snow video. Also, my shot timer said 5.something seconds but I think it picked up me reholstering or something.

Edited to add: I just started shooting this drill and am going to try to everyday. Hope this thread doesn’t end just as I’m starting because some folks don’t like it.

@BatteryOaksBilly can you tell me what size the a zone target is exactly ? I read a couple different things but went with approximately 6x11 marked with mud today.

Check out our target...on here some where. We have Both the 8 inch circle and the Rectangle to stop the 'I'm used to the other" folks.

I saw your set up, pretty sweet if I do say so myself. Might have to look around for a couple more pieces of steel.

Recorded today being I was setting up to record another drill so I figured I’d post it. I passed today, but accidentally shot a few rounds of my carry ammo by mistake then got mixed up on where I left off.

Seems it’s a little easier with the 8 inch “a zone” outlined instead of just trying to hit the center of the target.

Sorry for the little bit of language may not be safe for work.

Nice work Zack. Keep posting as you progress.

And Happy New Year all!

Thanks man, hope you and yours had a very Merry Christmas and happy new year.

Stay safe my friend,
Zack

Some great looking draws there! Nice shooting.

Now ya getting it!!!!! Great draw and presentation!!!

Snip from page 18 of the IDPA rulebook. Hackathorn's video says he marks the head with a roll of tape to 4-4.5", but my guess is he might have been using a different target. 4" and 8" circle on the IDPA should be ok, right?

Hackathorn also says in the Wizard Drill vid that you can have 2 points down and pass, that is shots out of the head circle but on the cardboard or one zone out of the body. Is that how it's shot for your test @BatteryOaksBilly ? Looks like the steel is all shots in or you fail.

If you miss a shot, you're done! LOL. Because: what did you hit when you missed the bad guy?

The other bad guy behind the bad guy I missed, or the non-threat who knew to duck but didn't. Any non-threats who know me will hit the dirt upon seeing me start to draw down on a baddie, but other unfortunate ones without the knowledge of how badly I shoot will likely be sacrificed. No LOL to that.

Just an update

I’ve shot the wizard cold everyday since posting last and have tried it with my wife’s g42 once in that time period. I’ve passed everyday except today when I bobbled my draw at 5 or 7 yards can’t remember which. Except for using the 42 I’ve used my edc which is a g19 with a 1moa rmr and a surefire x300. To me it seems a lot easier using a red dot.

Just an update,

I’ve shot the wizard almost daily for the past 2 weeks and haven’t got it once in that time period. The last time I recorded was last Tuesday I think (I’ll post a video later when I get home from work) but since it’s got cold I just can’t seem to clear my clothes in a quick enough time and if I do, I have to rush my shot/shots. If it’s cold I always wear a T-shirt, hoodie, and coat. 99% of the time this is how I dress living in the county so I can take layers on and off. Just thought I’d check in, good luck and keep shooting.

The last string kicks my butt.

I’m just too slow to put those last two rounds on target under 2.5

I shot it today. I missed the first shot--it was in the head box, but a little outside the circle. I missed the time on the third shot because I got the gun caught in my shirt on the draw. I think it was about 2.65, but I didn't write it down. Then I missed the fourth time. 2.58 on that one. Close.

Wow, you guys are getting fast. I'm still in the "over 3 seconds" category.....dang!
But all I want right now is to get all the shots! That's not going well, but I'll get there eventually!
