I took up trail running back in September, and holy cow, I've got the bug big time. Planning my first 10k at the end of February.

Something about running trails, in the dark with a headlamp that I've fallen in love with. I think I might be disappointed when the time change comes and makes it lighter later.

I do 3 miles, twice a week on the treadmill. Used to run after work but don’t have time anymore.

Tried running barefoot last night. Lasted about 12 minutes before I had to get the shoes. But learned quick how wrong I was running in shoes. Going to split the difference and get some minimalist running shoes. My feet have never been really tough.

I do a mile three times a week @ 9 min.
Normally on treadmill @ planet fatness.
I think the streching beforehand is also very important for my quality of life.
I haven't hurt my back since I started the routine.

I sure do miss the indoor track at UNC....For many reasons. Most of which smelled like strawberry shampoo.

Was running up till end of Sep last year then knee issue. Looking forward to getting out and hitting the dirt again after the snow and ice melts.. Got a dirt 1.5m road I run up and down at 6800'. Would like to do a 26.2 mile marathon this summer. Will be my third one if I do it and second here in Afghanistan.

I’ve been a runner most of my life but as of lately I’ve been fighting knee issues. Everytime I think I’ve gotten things squared away and start running again the problems flare up. I miss it.

I do the following for the past 5 months.

M: day off
T: 3 miles
W: day off
T: total of 2 miles for speed work
F: day off
S: day off
Su: 5 miles

I am in recovery mode right now, first day of Shot Show I did my Tuesday run and aggravated my Plantar fasciitis so I am buying better shoes on Saturday.
at 43, 300lbs I am better shape now then I was in my 30's.

I used to love running! Up to 10k races; I never even planned to do 1/2- or whole marathons.

Then... Achilles. I'd love to try running again, but the "repaired" one is nowhere near the same and I'm worried that the other side will give out.

I can still hike though! Maybe you'll pass me on the trail some time. Pls spare me the elbow! :)

Not here. Used to pound down the miles till paratroopin' broke me. Spent 10 months learning how to run again & prove my doc wrong. Then the years caught up with me, yet another lower extremity joint let go & my running days are done.

Get fitted by a proper running shop for your gait cycle. I have a slight probation in my gait and the correct shoe setup took stress off my joints and the aches after a run. Also buy good socks that wick away moisture and do not cause friction rubs.

I dabble in 5K's. Would like to try a 10K as well as a mini duathlon or triathlon in the future.

Make sure your gait and running style is correct too. I'm not claiming expertise but my understanding is shoes can mask mechanical issues that need to be addressed. With my small barefoot attempt I quickly found out I could not run the same as in shoes. You can tolerate no heel strikes. When I did put the shoe back on but kept the same gait it felt so much better than normal. And in the stuff I found PF can be aggravated by running wrong. Regardless, it's worth checking into if you are having issues. Might not be the shoes that need changing.

Personally, I have a tendency to run straight up and down leading to heel strikes. That is what I'm looking to fix. Trying to get a good forward lean on the treadmill seems to be harder than in the real world but it felt better the other night. And I need to take the same advice I gave you above and dig into this more before I have any issues.

@bigfelipe recommended I try some of these zero drop shoes as I had some foot problems.
Just wearing them for all my daily activities, and it really feels like my feet are getting stronger. I can stand and walk on hard surfaces and still no pain. And these are pretty minimal and flat.
Just having lots of give in sole allows foot to comform to stuff and just seems to activate all kinds of muscles that were not being used.
I'd like to try some other zero drop shoes as I do like these alot.

EDIT: These help with encouraging a mid strike. So much easier without a heel.

I've been running for several months now. Trail running is my favorite. I refuse to use a treadmill. I completed my 1st half marathon this past December in Boomer, NC on the warrior creek mt. bike trails.
I'm slower than Christmas...but get it done.
Between running & rucking I average 15 miles a week. Last year I had just over 1000 miles.

Altra is my favorite trail running shoe... my personal favorite is the Timp 1.5. The 2.0 just came out, will order some whenever these wear out. All Altra shoes are zero drop....if you ain't use to them... break yourself in slowly or your calfs will remind you that you are use to heels.

Been looking for a very aggressive trail shoe for shooting matches. Looks like they have a few options. Ill check them out, thanks.

Any of you runners doing the Run-n-gun shoot in April? I really interested in doing that. I believe it's a 5k, 2-gun format competition.

While it may sound pathetic that I need to 'train heavily' for a 5k @ just over 32 YoA, a 5k was seriously pushing it when I was in peak gorilla shape at like 21-24 Years old. Running and swimming (basically aerobic metabolic activity) is not my body's forte. However, I have a fighting chance, as a typical runner is much leaner in build, and all your gear has to be on your body for the course--so while im puking after mile and a half from burning lung, hoping many runner types will be collapsing from leg and should pain lol.

Should probably start a separate thread on here for that if there a lot of folks interested--get some car pools set up or something.

I was having knee pain and heel pain a couple years ago at work (I'm on concrete all day). I went to a fleet feet and got my feet laser measured. I knew I was pretty flat footed, and I have a flat, wide toe box, but narrow ankle/heel area, but had no idea about zero drop shoes. They had me try on a pair of Altra's, and oh my, my world changed. Gone are the knee and foot pain, and comfort for all day work. Now, that's all I wear. I don't run any more (did three miles every day when I was competing to help conditioning), but man I love those shoes, lol. I might look into those others NKD posted up.

I have 1000% confidence I run like a drunk three-legged horse.

What's the difference? Serious question...

The first is a great event, its more of functional fitness with guns. Or light Crossfit with guns.

The other I posted is a 5k running race with all your stuff on your body and you run into a stage. Some are pistol, others are rifle, the rest are both guns. Then make safe and keep on running your 5k. I hope that helps.

Would like to know the course of fire/kit need for that run. I run armed a lot of times.

I hate running with a passion....I have never liked it....which is why I signed up for 2 run-n-guns last year.

I did both of the ones in Ellerbe, NC last year and loved every minute of it. Training for it I went from running 1 mile in 12 minutes with nothing down to running 1 mile in 10.5 minutes while carrying a 20lb backpack.

I can’t make the one in April but am planning on the one in June at the Clinton House.

I took a break for awhile but I’m back to Running 3x a week to prep for it. Having a goal like the run-n-Gun or signing up for a 5k is huge for me. It gives me something to work towards. If I didn’t have those I’d sit on my butt.

Thats me 100%

I did 50 minutes straight running for the first time in my life this week. It was a slower 12 min/mile pace but I’ve never run that long without a single pause to walk.

Did it Tuesday and then did it again this morning!

Although I hate running it feels great at the end to accomplish something.

Gonna try and hit a full hour by end of next week!

Don't know your age of ability but your pace is my pace. I only do runs over 50 mins ones a week and take the next 6 days off from running. I have found a 6 day recovery has helped me avoid injury.

Keep in mind I am 43 and 300lbs at 6'6" so take it for what its worth.

Here's me at about the 8.5 mile mark of a 10 mile run. We try to hit the trails every Sunday morning if the temp is over 45 by 1100. Usually 4-5 mile run. I've got more gravity than most but I enjoy it.RAD18-572s.jpg

Picked up a pair of Hoka Cavu's a little over a week ago. Put in 3 miles x3 on the treadmill so far and I really like these shoes. Took a while to track down the zero drop shoes locally but very glad I found these to try out. Light weight, tight to the foot, stretchy, breathable, and not too soft on the cushioning.

Been training up for a half in 2 weeks, Tobacco Road Marathon. First half, hell, first race.

Wanting to hit 1K miles this year, and pushing with runs, bootcamp style workouts, and HIIT workouts.

Have a stupid long Murph coming up (11 mile run then the Murph work) all vested, so after this race I am going to start doing a lot more vested runs.

So half was cancelled. Doing it anyway.

Shorter run tomorrow, will put me over 200 miles for the year so far.

Still have to start vested runs.
