So I have a 5.56, a 7.62x39 and a 9mm AR pattern rifle. They are all great, and problem free. I'm thrifty though so there's not $1500 tied up between the three of them. Not counting rail mounted stuff.

I want a longer range rifle. Who out there has a PSA AR10 and wants to tell me why I should get one, or why I shouldn't? Seems like an affordable entry into that caliber.

Or should I just go bolt action for the longer range?

The why you should is easy, because it's cheap. The why you shouldn't is that in all likelihood you'll end up making modifications right off the bat to get it to run correctly.

I have several ar 10’s from psa that shot and performed perfectly.... am I missing something?

Not trying to be a smarty pants just wanted to know

I have a PSA AR10 gen II 20” that shoots every time I pull the trigger. 3-4” grouping at 100 yards. I’m sure That could be reduced with a better scope and someone with better eyes than mine...

It fits my use for hunting and range use just fine.

The first two generations of PA-10s had substantial issues resulting from poor design in the gas system and recoil spring/buffer/buffer tube. There are a lot of folks who found their lowers all beat up by the bolt carrier group due to poor design, plus bolt lockback and other failures.

They basically designed their barrel gas port too small and then compounded the problem by jury rigging the rest of the system to accommodate it.

What are you hunting that has a 3-4 foot target area? :p

Depends on if you're gonna carry it several hundred yards. If the answer is yes, get one of the new bolt guns that take the SR25 pattern PMAGS.

If you need volume of fire, then yes. Mine's great I love it until I have to tote all 12lbs of it somewhere. Then I am looking for a bipod and a shooting mat.

This is why I sold mine, 6.5 Grendel or the 224 Valkyrie is my next long range choice. Smaller and lighter!

The reason I'm thinking 308 is ammo availability. The 6.5 stuff is apparently pretty good, but how much of it is around? Like at the local gun store or even in a SHTF scenario if you can't just get some shipped to you. I think you're more likely to run across 308 than 6.5. At least right now.

So there's the fact that the first gen PA10 guns had issues, that's why I shy away from the new model of anything. Be it cars, guns, whatever. Sounds like they got them ironed out now?

Grendel is plentiful as long as you want steel and a Wolf on the box. Personally I'd rather shoot 69 or 77gr .223 heavies and have 10K Lake City laid up.

They'll get your rifle running, eventually, irregardless. You just might have to ship it back and forth a few times. Plenty of folks get rifles that work just fine, but there's quite a few who have shelled out the cash to fix a rifle that should just run right off the shelf too.

I wouldn't stake my life on a PA-10, I'll just put it that way.

I like my PSA 10.
It's a gen 2, their free-float upper with the 18"ss barrel.
Mine has run flawless and doesn't beat itself up. (well, outside of normal AR10 violence anyway)
Most surprising to me is the accuracy. Now I'm limited to 100 yards at my place, but this rifle bangs out 1 moa with cheap ammo all day. Maybe at 500 yards it might not do that, but we have a lot of fun with mine.
Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and feel like I got a gun that does better than what it cost.

My first gen PSA10 18"chews up brass, refuses to go into battery sometimes, is over gassed but its dead nutz accurate. I put a rifle buffer tube and buffer in it and it does run better than it did. I also put a break on it. More pleasant to shoot that way. My rifle smith bought the same gun and had the same issues. He put an adjustable gas block on his and it works a lot better. Have a few PSA AR15's and had even more. All have run flawlessly even with some effed up reloads. I would not buy another PSA AR10. I would buy a PSA AR9. On my list.

You lost me at irregardless. :p

I've got a Gen II PA10 that sits in the safe. Way overgassed with a 178 grain bullet and powder selection is not the problem! I mean it rips the rim clean off overgassed, leaving the rest of the case in the chamber. It does seem to do OK with 155 grain but I wanted something for distance also.

So until I get an adjustable gas block, there it sits. Once I get a block, I might as well get a free float rail...

Yeah I really wish they would have went with the rifle gas for 18 and 20" .308s, but mine wasn't that bad. The Superlative detent block did make a heck of a different in felt recoil though with the rifle weight buffer slamming around.

I have an 18" PSA AR10. I upgraded the trigger with a 3.5lb CMC single stage drop in, added a magpul stock, and a bushnell fixed 10x tactical scope.

With 168gr match bullets, it will shoot a 1 to 1.5" group at 100 yards, and groups I can cover with the palm of my hand at 200 yards. It has been 100% reliable with factory ammo, and only had issues with handloads I'd sized for use in my bolt action rifle. Any handloads I do for this rifle will be sized to factory specs.
