Thinking of a suppressor for my savage 308 and ar 308. Pros? Cons? I know there are many different kinds out there. I will have to do some research. Who has what? Quick mount or threaded. Serviceable or not ?

Lots of choices out there. I wouldn’t put user-serviceable anywhere near the top of my pro/con list when comparing options for a .30 can.

Do you own any silencers? If not, have you ever shot suppressed? (Just trying to figure out your expectations vs reality scenario)

I can't speak about too many brands but I went the quick detach route so I can use the same rifle can for all my rifles. I went with surefire due to past experiences with them, they may not be the quietest or the cheapest but they are durable from what I have seen. Mine is not user servicable because I have always been told that the build up in rifle suppressors isn't nearly as bad as pistol or rimfire, that may also be because I can't afford to dump hundreds of rounds of .308 in an afternoon like with pistols or rimfire.

I do not own one yet. I know it’s not like the movie where you here a quiet little pew pew. I have been around a few though. I am looking just to quiet it down some.

I have a few you could try out. ;)

We could meet at PHA one day if you’re interested. I don’t own a .308, but have 5.56/6.8/300BLK that you could see the difference (as an observer and a shooter) with suppressed or not with supersonic rounds.

We could even (assuming they’re threaded 5/8-24) mount them on your rifles for you to see the difference.

And it won’t make it Hollywood quiet, but I’ll take 140-150 dB over 165-175 all day long.

I see you are in Charlotte area. I belong to Rowan wildlife if that’s closer for you. That would be great to try a few out and see how they are.

Either one is fine. I’ll start a convo with you.

Some can be movie quiet with the right set-up. My bolt action .308 (Sig Sauer SSG3000) with subsonic ammo is more quiet than a pellet rifle, but it's moving a 220gr. projectile.

I have a direct thread Sig Sauer SRD762Ti for that rifle and it's pretty quiet, even with supersonic rounds there is a noticeable reduction.

I’ve got a 308 I use for hunting and could meet you at PHA also. It’s the silencerco harvester. It’s a direct thread.

Direct thread for easy and less expensive, but you need to maintain a check on the suppressor to be sure it doesn't loosen up. This typically only happens during a lot of rapid fire. You will get a feel for how tight it needs to be over time.

Quick mounts are great, but the attachment devices can get expensive.

Most rifle cans aren't serviceable, but the ones that are aren't meant for rapid fire...….. I wouldn't recommend a mag dump. But a shot every 10 seconds or so...… you should be good to go, But still don't let it get too hot. Griffin is the only company I can think of at the moment that makes a serviceable rifle can. Optimus, Paladin? and Sportsman.

The non serviceable cans tend to be a heavier duty item that can take more abuse, just depending on their construction.

Good Luck

Oh...… and the Paladin is user serviceable and full auto rated! I wasn't aware of that.

No point in opening a 30 caliber silencer unless you are shooting cast lead bullets. A user serviceable rifle can is just more complicated and more fragile with no benefit for the extra cost and complexity.

If I was closer, I'd let you try the few I have.
I can agree with ... everything said so far - I really like this CFF board.
The lighter weight cans like the harvester are great for bolt action guns that you don't intend to fire quickly. But some of them will say something like "do not fire more than 5 shots without letting the suppressor return to ambient temperature". If you want something you can take off your bolt gun then run a mag through your ar10, you miiiight want a beefier critter.
Serviceable cans are for .22lr and pistols.

that’s why I am asking. I don’t know much about them. Lots of good information here

I’m also new to the game with my first one waiting (.30 YHM Resonator R2)....

I did a lot of research and loaned on that one coupled with muzzle devices. There are a lot of great folks already responding here, but the muzzle decide route made the most sense to easily move it from host to host.

I will offer that the process is easier than it initially seemed to me. I used the Silencer Shop kiosk for my prints, picture and stamp purchase. I used thetrustshop.net for my Trust.

I bought the can through a Silencer Shop store as they had it in stock.

Other than the pain of waiting, it’s a relatively easy process. Once I have a few extra bucks, I’ll grab another as the second one is even easier now that I’m in the kiosk.

I am on there site now looking at the Rugged Razor. Looks pretty good so far. But I also am liking the Mantis suppressors that cover part of the barrel as well.

I will say despite the strength of a sealed can, they can build up a LOT of crud in them over their life span. Some of which can be removed manually if it’s accessible through the mount opening, but some need to go back to the manufacturer for service

Decreased internal volume leads to decreased sound reduction and increased weight

Think this M4-2000 sounds and weighs the same as new?

Trying to find a test/study that Ase Utra out of Finland did on this recently...

Note the decrease in suppression they tested

If you’re a High volume shooter, either get a serviceable can or write it off as a wear item like a barrel

Ive got a specwar that has around 15K through it. Mostly 300 BO but at least a thousand 308 and maybe 5 thousand 5.56. It definitely looks fired inside but its pretty clean with not much residue. I doubt I'll ever get enough rounds through it to need it cleaned.
