Never seen one in class you say? Pretty sure that makes you a UNC Tarheel grad. These events are important for the same reason this forum and many like it have vendors and sponsors. They bring in a lot of money to the schools. A team wins, it draws more fans, more fans means more ticket sales, more merchandise sales, more people trying to enroll. Higher application rates mean they can become more selective in who they enroll in their programs. This can lead to the quality of graduates improving, which adds esteem to the college, which circles back to higher application rates, more fans, and more money for the school.
Despite what people think, no one shows up to the Trivia Bowl matches. I remember seeing the athletes all over campus, never saw one of them in a class. But I was never irritated by it because it didn't negatively affect me in any way, on the contrary, their success on the court/field/track whatever brought more attention to the school, which made my degree stand out more to hiring managers when I graduated.

But...you have enough of a care to come complain about it. So...not confused at all. It’s not normal for people to start rants about things they don’t care about.

I don't think a public university should be in that business. I wish they would compete fiercely for Academic Excellence, and eschew Athletic Enterprise. These events are important for the same reason this forum and many like it have vendors and sponsors. They bring in a lot of money to the schools.
They cant do both?I don't think a public university should be in that business. I wish they would compete fiercely for Academic Excellence, and eschew Athletic Enterprise.
Another flaw in the business of education. It went from a institution of learning to a school known for football or basketball. Many schools stink at sports and have no sports scholarships but yet are at the top of the best school in the nation.I don't think a public university should be in that business. I wish they would compete fiercely for Academic Excellence, and eschew Athletic Enterprise.
Have not done both well at all so far, otherwise there would be more scholarships for top students. No one in my class had a scholarship at all. They cant do both?

I was talking about college.Maybe your high school was full of idiots?
I kid, but still a lot of 'sports' schools giving out scholarships for academics
Last year we had a kid get a free ride to Wake, another to Chapel Hill
oddI was talking about college.
Of course there are scholarships, and far more than in the past. Sports, in that time, has grown even richer.
Obviously you can't see the forest for the trees, but then again you never do. I make a STATEMENT which you obviously can't discern from anything else and your little convulsed mind can't understand. It is a STATEMENT, look it up using Google since that seems to be about the upper level of what you're capable of understanding.

Yep, I do wonder from all the money made by the university on athletics how much goes into a general fund vs just being for the athletic programs.I don’t necessarily think it should be as important as it is. But money talks. What we want or how we feel about it is irrelevant to the fact that sports brings in cash and donors, raises awareness of an institution and drives applications.

I’m sure the majority of it goes to the athletics department. But the gain many people ignore is that winning teams mean recognition, recognition leads to more applicants, more applicants means expanded enrollment. College sports are more a self funded marketing plan than a fund raiser for the school.

Yeah I get it but I still think they should be throwing some percent of profits at minimum to the general fund. We shouldn't have 100 year old buildings with 10k students and new buildings for 100's of student athletes. Most major programs go even smaller. WVU has a brand new men's basketball building. I understand it's a recruiting tool which helps bring better athletes, which in turn helps bring more kids. But more shouldn't always be the goal. I totally understand were you are coming from though.
https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/...l-record-177-million-revenue-profits-dip.htmlRarely does a top football program gain money. The more they make, the more they spend. I understand the free market but paying a Coach 7 million dollars plus his endorsements and shows revenues is out of control. I have never, ever attended my colleges sporting events. And I played on the college tennis team which had zero scholarship money. Colleges have now found a way to give athletes money to play without offering one of their scholarships. They take the money out of academic offerings at most schools.
A D1 football program gets 85 scholarships. They can have much more players above that to travel and basically can bring an army of dressed players for home games. Last time I checked only 22 men, a punter, and a kicker played. Once upon a time there were fewer players that also were back ups on the other side of the ball. I like sports, played sports, kids played and were offered, but I have never bought a ticket for a pro or college sport but have attended a bunch on other people’s purchase. I’ve coached a bunch of kids youth programs. I can tell you participation is dwindling fast but yet watching on TV has increased. Watching at actual events has declined.
I’m not sure what point you are making. But before you say look above where I said rarely. Most colleges lose money on athletics and donors support the losses.
My point was top football programs make ALL the money. They don't lose money period especially the top programs.I’m not sure what point you are making. But before you say look above where I said rarely. Most colleges lose money on athletics and donors support the losses.

True but the fact is a team that wins a national championship is paid many millions for making the final game over many years. That’s not NCAA money but TV money and tons of merchandise sales on top of that. Add in coaches get huge bonuses for making goals such as making the title game. Schools even take out insurance policies to limit the bonus paid by the school. It’s not at that point an educational institution. It’s now a for profit organization where to keep up all most all the programs go in the red to keep up with the few who profit. My point was top football programs make ALL the money. Exactly. But I’ll add that those big donors influence the decision to keep a coach. That big donor is someone who the school president fears. He courts the guy but has his butt cheeks clinched the whole time.Which is why it is important that they win...losing teams lose money...that’s why they fire coaches for not winning instead of holding on to them because they love the kids and are great examples.
