Wuhan, nCV, germs....

Girlfriend's son is Army in Northern Ca. He is transferring in May to Louisiana. So Mom and Sis were flying out and he was taking a month leave starting in April and they were going to do the big across America drive back and hit all the sights on the way. Saturday, he just found out his leave is cancelled and he will not be allowed to travel till May. Just enough time to get him to his new base. She spent all day Saturday cancelling flights and hotel reservations. Amazing thing, she was able to cancel them all and not lose any money. But put a big damper on them. They had been planning the trip ever since he knew he was transferring and was a big deal to them. But better safe than sorry at this point.

For those who think Trump is doing poorly, a different perspective:
https://pjmedia.com/trending/joe-bi...avirus-response-then-plagiarizes-trumps-plan/

Obviously biased source, take it for what it's worth. Personally, I don't think he's doing perfectly, but he's not fumbling it either. The public/private partnerships and encouraging states to do things themselves seems a reasonable and viable approach.
I was/still am critical of Trump's approach early on, as I've detailed in earlier posts. But since last week, he has really stepped up. If it was a Dem in charge, air travel from China wouldn't have been suspended so quickly, and travel from Europe might not ever have been suspended.

He also got screwed by CDC incompetence.

He is in a tough spot on this one so I am giving him a little slack and glad I am not making the choices he or his team is being faced with but he impressed me with his comments the other day talking about the previous laws for the testing approval in saying they were lacking in getting things approved but instead of blaming one side or other he owned it wasnt really anyones fault as the fact they hadnt really faced this type of event before so was not setup for it when they wrote the laws. Regardless tough spot between peoples lives vs economy choice.

Effective today I have crossed over to the “other side”. Though I’ve mostly been in the middle with a sleight favor for the “we need to do more “, but now that I’ve seen “more” it looks worse than the disease.

an economic recession will inevitably come with higher suicide rates, depression, drug and alcohol abuse related deaths. Then the nature of this recession is going to impact necessities of life like food shortages GLOBALLY which will pressure supply chains to bursting levels. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume the nature of events causing this particular recession would also increase homicide rates and violent crime.

I expect a global economic recession of this magnitude will result in more deaths than Coronavirus.

correct response with 20/20 hindsight would have been “old and weak self quarantine, expose yourselves at your own risk”. The irony is, the largest vulnerable population are the ones who depend the most on the market stability since beyond retirement age.

if this 20 % self quarantined, the other 80% would be producing the goods and wealth needed for them to live the remaining years/decades with the quality of life they needed. Now it’s looking like the world is going down together.

I have my health and many decades to financially recover, but damn this just seems like a wild price to pay for a relatively weak pandemic.

Look for a big announcement today (Tuesday). I don't think it will push to Wednesday. I hope all your ducks are in a row. I pray enough of mine are.

As I explained to my wife, in an effort to calm her down, this is not the grid down zombie apocalypse. Infrastructure still exist. But, the next 30days will be an interesting social experiment.

Places are closing/laying off workers already
For example, all regal movie theaters are shutting down for a while and laying off their workers. Then, when they reopen, and they will, the workers can reapply... which I think is a bit bogus, but whatever.

Lots of places are closing dining rooms.

I was at the store yesterday just to look around before my order was ready for pick up, more bare shelves.

But I think this will come back soon. I think that folks panic buy and it sucks, but the shelves will be restocked soon.

But Im still concerned as heck about this economy

What makes you think today? Just that We’d or something else? I expected it yesterday and was surprised, but noticed that a Trump pulled a unique tactic by leaving it to the states (for now). To a degree he is correct in that if there is no issue in Monkey’s Elbow, Ky that they don’t need to be federally locked down. Obviously he can ”change his mind” if enough states ask for it.

The rumors I’ve heard (mostly over the weekend) said it would happen in the next few days (mon to wed).

The reason places like Regal are officially laying people off is so they are eligible for unemployment vs being in total limbo. I also believe that those who are laid off will get priority in term of emergency funding assistance. It sucks but most businesses large and small don’t have the cash on hand to pay employees when there is no revenue coming in. I can only hope steps are taken to help the avg person employee vs just the big business or business owner.

I know man, but it still sucks.

i agree. I worked for a long time in the service industry. Restaurants and retail. I would be out of a job. Lots of places I worked would have gone under with no cash flow for 14-21 days. There is going to be a huge economic impact. Small communities like the one I live in will be hit hard. The small and local businesses will feel it the hardest.

It's an interesting argument and it seems some of the European countries are coming down on this side and essentially letting the virus burn through their population, though I think even they are aiming for a slow burn so that the hospitals don't get overrun. Keep an eye on Sweden, Germany and UK to see how this controlled pace herd immunity approach works.

I think many Americans who still think this is just the flu are going to be surprised by (1) who ends up in hospital, and (2) how sick some of the 'mild' cases that don't require hospitalization are.

There is much we still don't know about this virus, for which we have zero immunity. Saw an article recently that mentioned brainstem infection in some patients as virus migrates from lungs into medulla via nerves. If that's happening, the body will never fully clear the virus - virii that infect nerve cells are protected because our bodies don't attack the nerve cells, e.g., varicella, herpes simplex, etc. Not clear wether that would cause reinfection of lungs esp if immuno-compromised in the future.

Just how big of an announcement?

Right now the .gov is doing the old "frog in the pot" trick. They are letting states and cities raise the temp by doing their own closings. That allows other states/ cities to get use to the idea that it is coming. If it hit all at one time, the US would melt down : "jump out of the pot". Then the first level will be 2 weeks, then extended for 2 weeks. Maybe by the 6 week mark we will be on the down hill side of the curve. I would expect NG to be called up around week 4 to support states with keeping things calm and flowing- food, water, power...

Uh-oh! Maybe this IS the zombie apocalypse.

:D

Maybe! I check the store shelves daily around my hood. Once shelves stop refilling it will be game on....Phillyrats will be all over the yard in a week for sure. Heck with the virology....Im worried about hungry folks.

We closed for indoor seating 4 days ago but takeout is kicking. Our liquor stores have closed too except for a select few. Nothing worse than sober drunks with the a touch of the Wuhan.

We are just about to have to close our doors- 1 vet out because she has 2 kid with resp. problems and does not want to bring it home to them, 1 tech out because she has immune problems and is sick (she doesn't think its corona), 1 tech out because she live with older parent with health problems, and hospital manger out with stomach bug. Kind of leaves just me and 1 full time and 1 part-time tech to keep it open. We are moving to just sick/ emergency visits- no annuals, nail trim, anal gland, baths, boarding...

We have already started people control- call when you get in parking lot, escort to room, see pet in back, check out in room, escort out. Curb service for item pick-up.

But it's not going to pay the bills at this level. I think my best bet for employee is to lay them off so they can get unemployment and just cut back our open hours

That sounds like an awful lot of evolution in such a short period of time. If brain stem involvement etc is a component of COVID19, it likely characteristic of other coronaviruses as well. In that case, should be able to dig up some boomed literature on the matter.

Makes me think of the old lessons in business economics from back in my college days. They would talk about fixed versus variable costs. Fixed costs being ones that you have regardless of whether your business is open or closed and include things like rent payments. Variable cost are the additional costs incurred by operating. The class emphasized that when a company is not able to cover it's variable costs of being open is when one should close their doors. Hopefully that is a temporary problem.

Jesus...over toilet paper.

Now, what do you think things are gonna look like when it’s food/water?

Well, to be fair, there was A LOT of ass in that fight. Between the three of them there looked to be about a half ton.

Was at a meeting at my part-time job about 3 weeks ago. Coworker told me people were walking in one of the local clinics picking up a whole box of masks that were for patient use and walking out with them. Today at work we removed the gloves and hand sanitizer out of the exam rooms. Still have it in the hallways. Patients at other facilities were stealing gloves and others were suspected of filling up their bottles of hand sanitizers with the ones in the room.
Had something interesting happen today. Let me just say that SOME of the public are idiots. Even some who work around medical people. I use to be a people person but people ruined it for me.

Restaurants and bars that ignored a state order issued over the weekend to limit the size of crowds to fewer than 100 people prompted the decision to close all venues to dine-in service during the virus outbreak, Gov. Roy Cooper said.

His order on Saturday exempted restaurants, according to DHHS.

That was a direct quote from him speaking today, as captured on WRAL...maybe thats one of the reasons the Lt Gov is calling him out on todays decision.

Yes, I understood your post. Sorry for the confusion there. I was pointing out that is not what he said in his order on Saturday.

Kinda like his issuing voluntary guidelines last week, then telling us on Saturday that he had to make them mandatory since people didn’t do them when they were voluntary. He talks to us like we are 5-year olds who have trouble wiping our noses.

Gov. of Nevada ordered all businesses to close for 30 days.

Wow. This is beginning to make no sense at all to me.

I feel like my life is an internet meme. More evidence we live in The matrix. Somewhere some sick alien **** is laughing at this “well that escalated quickly” meme that is our universe

Don't leave us hanging.

We're doing "prescreening" where we ask people a few quick questions before they come into our building, for real temp/appearance screening and then on to business. We had a lady cuss us out because we wouldn't just let her thunder in through everything and find her friend to find out how long she was going to take. And by policy we don't give information about people to other people without first verifying that they came with each other and the person in our building is okay with us telling them things like "yes/no they are here/not here".
I hate people too, and with us all on edge i'm certainly not getting any more friendly.

If all states do 30 day stuff....we will enter the apocalypse. Just Nevada alone for ALL business is guaranteeing recession. If any major GDP state (TX, NY, CA, FL, NJ, NC, GA...) we will likely enter a full blown depression. California is something like 20 TRILLION GDP. Our economy would shrink to the size of Eastern Europe if a few of them followed suit.

if I wanted to live in Ukraine I’d ducking move there. I’d rather catch a god damn cold or breath through a respirator for a week than watch the fall of the American empire
