Wuhan, nCV, germs....

From everything I've read about this, the private comments didn't include anything that hadn't already been stated publicly by the CDC.

I haven't done the homework to know for sure either way, just passing along what I've read.

The wife just an email from PNC statesville branch saying they had someone test positive and they had to notify everyone that had done business with them in the last week. Luckily we had done drive through and she used hand sanitizer.

FWIW, a relative at Baptist said they're soliciting volunteers to work during the impending national lockdown. Don't know if that means they *know* something or are anticipating something.

Seems to be standard practice. My best friend from back in WV. He is a nurse supervisor and his floor got taped in half with a plastic barrier and they asked for volunteers as well. He volunteered for covid-19 rooms on the condition he would go home everyday. They told him if it hit as hard as Italy he would have to stay at the hospital.

After listening to the clip, it really isn’t that bad. They are making a mountain out of a molehill. Had it been Joe Biden, NPR would have ignored it.

Something might be coming down this weekend:
We employee a lady that her husband just retired from Army this year and he works as a employee for Army now. He called her and said that a lot of back room chatter started about either a state or national lock down this weekend. Nothing firm but he said things were moving at a different pace and they told him to take his lap top home.

Then we got the warning about not traveling out of US.

About an hour ago I get same info from different source that has ties to CDC.

All were looking at Sunday as a date for what ever "it" is.

Not looking to start rumors, I want to see if anyone else has gotten any trembles from other areas.

Yep. There has been chatter all week. What I heard earlier in the week made me think it would have already happened. We shall see....

Its not the virus in its current state that is my worst concern. My concern as is with all bioboogers is what is the probability of mutation?
My daughter, home from Vet school, said yesterday, "Corona viruses are not zoonotic. They do not mutate and jump species."

So, it did not come from a bat.

We are anticipating more than anyone can handle.

Doctors and staff are already overworked and stressed preparing.
I have been conferencing daily with docs from around the globe and we are standing on the beach waiting for a Cat 5 hurricane to blow in

hear the test is freaking painful

Yeah, they gotta reach pretty far in. Unlike influenza, this virus prefers the lower respiratory tract. If we could do high throughput CT scans, that would be a much better way of testing. In China, they found CT scans were picking up infections that test kits were not. By the time viral load is detected in nasal/throat samples, the infection is well underway in the lungs.

I've heard some information at work that will probably prompt leadership to freak out. We have a large project coming up so that even though the site I service is shutting down for up to 45 days, I could probably work non-stop without it. My local branch guy says our company is gearing up for decontamination jobs like we did for oil cleanups during the Deepwater Horizon spill. For those that don't know, @Bull Durham and I work in the hazardous waste industry.

My customer has sent us CISA letters so we can travel and procure fuel. We work in communications, so we’re considered “critical infrastructure”.

Here is the explanation to this contradiction, as I heard it this morning... corona viruses are not zoonotic, but all viruses can mutate and become zoonotic. Zoonotic, it turns out means that it Already has the ability to jump species. Covid-19 is an exception among corona viruses, because it is zoonotic, while the class of viruses called Corona are common among many animals, and they not zoonotic.

Zoonotic disease can be direct or indirect:

Direct would be like rabies- animal has disease, bites human, transmits direct to human

Indirect is what we have now. This was a disease that you would not be able to get normally. But it has mutated or recombined with a disease that humans can get. It happens in the wild and also in labs.

Aaaaaannnndddd from the same article as linked above:

“As local officials work to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus, Durham County District Attorney Santana Deberry announced her office is taking steps to reduce the incarcerated population inside Durham jails.

In a statement, Deberry said her office worked closely with defense attorneys and judges to identify people in the Durham County Detention Facility who do not pose a public safety risk, are over 60 years old or have health conditions that put them at risk of serious illness from COVID-19. Those people would either have their release conditions modified or their case disposed.

"We are also working with local law enforcement to ensure that only those few individuals who do present a danger to our community are brought to the detention facility during this emergency," Deberry said in a written statement. "We ask that defense attorneys notify us if they represent a client who is in custody in Durham and at high-risk of illness. "

unfortunately, the company has announced that we are also a critical industry.
We've had 2 or 3 employees sick in the past few days, but only with gastrointestinal stuff.
unfortunately it seems that as of last night, a lot of covid cases are showing up with g/i symptoms now...

Link here to an NPR story from Italy implying that the virus was circulating in Lombardy as far back as November, which would at least partially explain why it is so bad there now.

geneticist here, admittedly NOT actively involved in virology, but from what I understand and have read the Coronavirus Are in fact zoonotic. The evidence of such from previous outbreaks are overwhelmingly supportive of that fact.

Some of my co-workers are in PA, and said the governor there has issued an order closing the physical locations of all “non-life sustaining businesses” as of 8pm 19-Mar.
I’m still at work, so have not had time to try to confirm online

I got a few gigs for you in D.C. infinite workload. You guys will be rich beyond your dreams. Boats and hoes rich.

Do not pay attention to rumors pay attention to facts.

Yepper....our Gov also closed all the liquor stores too. Currently you can be a going concern if you are essential.....if you nonessential your done doing business. Food can be had mostly anywhere but you cant dine out in public only takeout. Store shelves continue to refill but are constantly low. The refill on those shelves is my primary indicator for probable trouble on the shitometer...there are 1.8 million folks in Philly and few gardens and livestock this time of year. The Chinese have granted us interesting times for sure!

I'm hearing rather different from a lot of places - hospitals reporting much slower than usual. NY and such is where it's busy.

What world does your governor live in where liquor stores are considered non-essential???

I spent a forgettable year or so living in PA. God awful place. I have spent a lot of time their for work too. Particularly the Philly area is a place on the same level as any other large urban shithole. Sure there are some pretty areas in the State, but taken as a whole it sucks. So naturally their Governor sucks too. :p

Philly is a poor example of PA as a whole. Philadelphia is a joke compared to its roots but PA is a great state as a whole. I like working up there. Especially western PA. Less bureaucracy in the local governments than here. Friendlier gun laws too...

Yeah there is lots of woods up there, but it’s still a pit. :D

???

Go read up on SARS and MERS. Ebola too. And that's all in the last 20 years.

Viruses do mutate (anything that replicates using imperfect transcription of DNA or RNA is capable of mutation). Sometimes those mutations allow the virus to infect another species. Pair that mutation with the opportunity of close contact between different species, and zoonotic transmission will eventually happen.

This is why there is much pressure in China to shut down these wet markets.

Yep. Even up here, where there are thousands of infected, people are not taking this seriously enough. Was at Home Depot yesterday, and I was in the tiny minority of people wearing a mask.

Liquor stores included in list of essential businesses, so they'll remain open. Guessing our few gun stores are deemed non-essential.

Some people are going to lose their minds, even if they don't run out of money to buy food. Not to mention our wonderful youts who won't be in school.

Virtue signaling libs who live in or very near 'diverse' areas may discover that 'diversity' without a strong police deterrent isn't as wonderful as they've been taught.

A lot of places are clearing out patients who don't really need to be in a bed a critical patient might need. Elective anything is postponed. Places where the virus isn't thick yet probably are slow, but again, calm before the storm type scenario.
Most have also banned visitors, so traffic in and out of hospitals is slower.

The local hospital is doing this. They started checking temps of all employees before they enter the building. They were allowing one visitor per patient. They have stopped that (with exception such as a parent with pediatric patient). They've disabled automatic door openings. All of the nurses employed by the mother ship including satellite areas had to do an online questionnaire that was due by 5:00 yesterday. We pretty much figured it's so they can pull us to where needed if they need to.

Right now where I work things are a controlled chaos, but this is certainly exposing cracks in the foundation. We have had some staff simply not show up to work, we've had some staff quit outright. The little girl they have in charge of emergency management has been on the job about 3 minutes it seems.

I've been in almost daily meetings with people from the state, CDC, and FEMA. The messaging has been about the same. Unless something weird or bizarre takes a hard turn, I think we know what we're dealing with.

All of that said, all in all we'll never be prepared enough for the worst case scenario but I think we are pretty prepared for the median.

My wife is a morning shopper, goes every Saturday morning about 6:30. She's on her way home now, she said the store is "mobbed" and "absolutely packed".
