NC Vehicle Inspection

Got my bike inspected yesterday, and didn’t hear anything about stopping inspections. Did my registration to get my tags online though, as I didn’t want to take a chance waiting in line at DMV.

Hasnt come across the DMV puter that does the inspections here at the shop.

And why would they?

I’m more concerned with having to go get my DOT physical before it expires in mid-May.

The "safety only" inspections seem like a really stupid hold over from days gone by. $13.60 to make sure all my lights work, tires are ok, wipers are ok, and horn honks. The shops don't get much of that $13.60. Seems to me like they could make a lot more money on fines than they do on the inspections if they just did away with the safety inspections.

In AZ they were big on smog test. I drove a diesel so there was no smog test. The state, not wanting to lose it's inspection revenue on my diesel driving ass, invented an "opacity test" to check the color of the smoke coming out of the tail pipe. To do that you have to mat the accelerator for a few seconds 3 times in a row while in park to engage the rev-limiter. We Todd did.

I think there was something about that...
If you find it, let me know. I just got my reminder in the last week or so.

Edit: thanks for the info

I wish they would just add the $13.60 to the price of the tag and stop doing the useless Inspection. Its just a hassle for the most part if you have newer vehicles.
It was proposed in the legislature a few years back IIRC. Obviously didn't pass. The argument was that there is no evidence that it actually helps anything (based on several studies), but there was a lot of push back.

Inspections are up and running as usual. We have done a metric crap ton of them this week.

question... I registered in MI last June, then moved down here not long after. My MI registration is... questionable at this point.
There's no kind of prorating, is there?
Like, would I have to pay a full year now, and then again on my birthday in june?

If its tags they run. Year.to year not bday to bday.

Drivers license is bday to bday

my license was done a while ago. of course, it's gonna be difficult to get registered now what with all the fuss and hoopla by appointment only. also, i better not screw up and forget any important documents.

Here we are:
https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/emergency/fmcsa-cdl-waiver-32420

Appears to give you til 6/30 to get it done if need be.
Just a quick follow-up...

My DOT card expired 5/21/20. I intentionally didn’t go get it renewed based on the thought I had until 6/30/20. I got the letter from the DMV yesterday saying I was out of compliance and if I didn’t get them an updated copy by 7/21/20 my license would be downgraded.

I assumed it was just a system generated letter based on the standard process, so I decided to call this morning and confirm. According to the lady I spoke with, it was up to the states to decide whether to invoke the waiver or not, and NC did not.

So, I have 60 days (thus the 7/21 deadline) to get them a new one before any damage is done. That’s actually longer than I expected, but I’ll make sure to get to it soon.

Of note, I went to the NCDMV site to see if there was any mention of the DOT card extension. I didn’t see one for that, but there is a note about NCDMV Extensions Granted. The info below comes from: https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/locate-dmv-office/Pages/dmv-offices-closed.aspx

It’s dated after the previous post in this thread, so I don’t think it’s duplicate info?

Expiration Dates Extended for DMV Credentials
On May 4, 2020, Governor Cooper extended expiration dates for N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles credentials (such as driver licenses and vehicle registrations; full list below):
  • People whose credentials expired on or after March 1, 2020 and before Aug. 1, 2020 have been given a one-time, five-month extension (from the original expiration date) to renew driver licenses and handle vehicle registrations.
  • Any fines and fees related to expired credentials are being temporarily waived. Customers who already paid a $15 fee for a late renewal in March or April will be reimbursed.
  • This language does not change the original expiration date of the driver license or vehicle registration renewal; it only provides a one-time extension.
For example: If your registration has a current deadline of March 31, 2020, then the new due date will be Aug. 31, 2020. Next year, the registration deadline will revert to March 31, 2021.
  • Road skills tests are still a requirement for those seeking a limited provisional license, or a first-time driver license. Road tests are not being offered until it is determined it is safe to do so.
  • The five-month extension applies to any credential that expires on or after March 1, and before Aug. 1. The list includes:
Driver license
Learner's permit
Limited learner's permit
Limited provisional license
Full provisional license
Commercial driver license
Commercial learner's permit
Temporary driving certificate
Special identification card
Handicapped placard
Vehicle registration
Temporary vehicle registration
Dealer license plate
Transporter plate
Loaner/Dealer "LD" plate
Vehicle inspection authorization
Inspection station license
Inspection mechanic license
Transportation network company permit
Motor vehicle dealer license
Sales representative license
Manufacturer license
Distributor license
Wholesaler license
Driver training school license
Driver training school instructor license
Professional house-moving license

Got my bike inspected yesterday at 10 Cycles, the KTM/Husky dealer in Matthews. Went to grab my wallet to pay and they said, it's free for the month of June!

Sorry. Was not my intention to mislead, maybe I overlooked I didn't notice any mention of state variance in the fmsca announcement.

Pretty ridiculous that the license itself can expire and no big deal, but the health card can't. Gov't burden vs your burden I guess. Kinda like gov't CDL drivers not needing a health card.

I also think it a load that the states have say on the waiver for interstate CDL holders.

I read (ok, maybe scanned) it and didn’t see anything about the state variance, either. Just wanted to report what they told me today.

The downgrade they are talking about is making your cdl an INTRAstate instead of INTERstate

No big deal as a new physical will return them to normal

That’s not what the letter says. It specifically states “You would not be authorized to operate a commercial motor vehicle if you fail to provide the documentation needed.”

The documentation needed is either an updated medical examiner’s certificate, or an updated self-certification form that reflects Excepted Interstate or Intrastate. I know when they changed the medical form several years ago you had certain categories where you didn’t need a card.

As I read it, I can either certify I’ve transitioned to one of those categories, or get a card...or will no longer have a valid CDL. But I have 6+ weeks, so I’m not too worried about it. :D
