I recently installed a sight-mount picatinny rail on my Remington R-1 Enhanced .45acp. For those not familiar with this product, it is a short (2 1/2" long) rail which uses the existing dovetail cut in the frame and requires only one hole to be drilled and tapped in the slide. The rail incorporates a fixed rear sight so you have something to use without the optic, although you would have to adjust for windage using the front sight.
Even though there was not a standard kit for my gun because of the difference in Novak dovetails, the company was very helpful in getting me parts that would work. You remove the rear sight, insert a dovetail which is a slip fit and has two holes drilled and tapped in it. The rail is placed on top and screwed into this dovetail which is pulled upward and locks the rail into the slide. After carefully centering the rail, you need to locate the spot to drill and tap a blind hole in the slide to match up with a corresponding hole in the front of the rail. Once this is done, you reassemble everything and loctite it in place. For an extra charge, the company will do this for you if you ship them the slide. I like the fact that this rail stops short of the ejection port and is more esthetic, in my opinion, than a full length rail. Obviously, the short length won't let you put on a scope, bit it works great for a red dot. Sight-mount.com for anyone interested.

There's no picture, but I envision this as being very high. The dovetail mounted plates for an RMR type dot tend to get high by just a few mm. I imagine this is at least 3/4" higher than that. Do you have a picture for us? I'm curious.

The base of the rail sits 1/8" above the slide at the front and 1/4" at the rear. The difference is due to the slide being cut lower in the back to accommodate the Novak dovetail.

I also have a Ruger .22 with a full Weigatinny rail and that does sit very much higher, as your post stated. This rail is very different, which is why I wanted to try it to see for myself. So far I am happy with it. I like the fact that the optic rides closer to the bore axis.

Sight-mount has much better photos on their website. Thanks again for asking.
