Favorite Coffee

A few years ago Consumer Reports did a blind taste testing on various brands of coffee, everything from el cheepo grocery store brands to Starbuckies. The winner was plain old 8:00 coffee from the grocery store. My wife still buys a Kona blend we both like pretty well, though, when she can find it on sale.

Wow, how did I miss this?! We have a lot of different coffees that we like but it's hard to beat S&D.

it's hard to beat S&D
No it's not! I could run swamp water through a luke-warm used hiking sock and it would be better than that stuff! I've tried to like it being "local" and all...but it just doesn't work out.

Starbucks is burnt crap. I used to think their water was too hot, but even their whole bean blends taste burnt. Worthless.

McDonald's brand is better. If you're looking for a decent but cheap coffee, try it.

My personal favorite is Larry's Beans, DR. Mojo and House Blend (local Raleigh biz). Haven't tried Black Rifle, but if I can do so while supporting the forums, that sounds like an excuse.

My wife loves 8o'clock - and it's a really good backup for when I'm out of the good stuff. I can tell the difference, but barely.

And follow Alton's advice - that pinch of salt makes a massive difference. (works in a regular brewer, french press, even in a keurig)

We have bought the Jamaican blue mountain from Costco for years. It is definitely my favorite. Burr grind it before making it in a normal coffee maker during the week. French press on weekends when I have more time.

Javesca Coffee. I found it just before Christmas. Its a small shop right down the street from my work in a tiny industrial strip in south Charlotte. They buy the green coffee and roast it the same week you order (It can get whole been or ground). Ordered another bag yesterday and picked it up today. The two guys that own the place were there filling bags with fresh coffee. They gave me a quick Coffee 101 session and showed me how the roasting process worked, even fired up the roaster so I could see. They also have a great mission, for every bag of coffee they sell, they donate at least 4 meals to the Carolinas, Guatemala, and Burundi. Really cool stuff. Not cheap but i like supporting local, especially when it supports a good cause. https://javesca.com/

You poor sad soul. Folgers is the potted meat of the coffee world.

The prices are decent. Their site is a little too much like shopping for wine but I'll still give them a try.

One does not wash a seasoned coffee mug (or carafe) that belongs to someone else... This one isn't mine, but mine looks very similar.

I’ve heard that said about Navy captains.... NEVER WASH THE CAPTAIN’S MUG... BAD JUJU for the ship.

Off topic, but back in the 1970's I got a tour of this company, then known as James G. Gill Company. The tour ended in the company board room, where there was a small, antique, gas-fired roaster. I was told that when business guests were given the tour they ended in the board room, where freshly roasted beans were ground, brewed, and served on the spot. I didn't rate the deluxe tour, unfortunately. They had a coffee warehouse that had been in use since about 1902, and I suspect that the wooden beams smelled like coffee down to the center of the wood.

Black Rifle had a sale AND I had a coupon code. Incoming!

I don't know what beans they use, but a cafe con leche from the Bra Cafe in Barcelona is hard to beat...

I love Lavazza coffees. Crema e Gusto for espresso, and fresh home-ground Gran Riserva in an Aeropress is tough to beat.

my go to daily is a keurig so that's far from the best at anything but quick...but the best keurig I've tried yet is Starbucks brand Toasted Grahm flavor. I know. I know. Girly flavored coffee, but it's good black.

Best cup I've ever had poured for me? On a train in Austria, near Vienna. Couldn't tell you what it was.

Best stuff from the store? Illy brand in the blue tin, maybe the dark roast.

Caribou house blend, medium roast.

Buy it whole bean and grind it immediately before brewing. Coarsest grind setting on the machine.

Use filtered water, bring to a boil

Brew for 4 minutes, no more.

Enjoy the best cuppa coffee!

Whatever brand you buy, grind it fresh, no tap water, and 4 minute brew time.

+15 Caribou

Currently drinking caribou. It's pretty good for what can be found at the grocery store. Strongly considering getting into roasting my own beans. My go-to brew method for the mornings is a Moka pot and if making coffee for company or in the evenings, a french press. At some point I'll get into pour over as well, but haven't bothered with it yet.
I did indeed start using a pour-over and roasting my own beans.

It's certainly not for everyone and I could never fault someone who didnt go through the trouble of it, but man does it produce a good cup of coffee. Roasted some from el Salvador a couple weeks ago that was really good.

I have always been a fan of Black Rifle brand coffee, specifically their murdered out roast, and Death Wish brand coffee which is supposedly the most caffeinated or something along those lines.

These two are my current favorites, but anything from Counter Culture is really good. This stuff is roasted in Durham and usually runs $11.99 a bag at Harris Teeter, but is on sale pretty often for $9.99.

I also like Black Rifle but my measly retirement checks make it a holiday treat. It's kinda pricey!
I read you...I needed the sale AND the coupon to persuade me to spring for some :D It will probably last me a year or so, alternated with the cheap stuff.

8:00 here. We get whole bean and grind it.

Every now and then my wife will get other stuff when it's on sale or she has good coupons. Starbucks, Community, Seattle's Best. But our standard is 8:00.

Yeah, being a Jarhead I bring allot of coffee!

Normally stick to 8 o'clock whole bean and grind it myself.
