Songs you should be ashamed to like.

@Chdamn , Imagine, if you will. A world where a white 15 y/o male enters a lime green home. A home turned into a thriving business, the business of alcohol distribution. The owner, a convicted double murderer, called Terrapin, an aged black male relegated to a wheel chair. Enter “Kool”, a fancier of a popular musical group of the time. “Kool” proudly wears a white naval dress hat like singer of said group. For 1983 the home audio was quite adequate and normally expelled soul and R&B. Today, however, “Afternoon Delight” was the owners choice, a choice I particularly liked. “Kool” did not and a disagreement ensued with Terrapin. “Kool” was asked to leave, refused, and Terrapin retired to his bedroom only to return with a Remington 552 laying across his lap. As Terrapin was stuck, the length of the 552 being outmatched by the narrow doorway, the lone 15 y/o white boy ( me) and 10 or so other visitors departed through the front door. As I lept off the front porch, “Kool” went to the right, I went left. I knew I was good at this point. I was 20 or so yards away as I stopped, turned back, and expected to see Terrapin shoot “Kool”. I saw Terrapin roll out into the porch, using only his left hand. His right hand was filled with the 552, at his shoulder, firing .22 rounds, AT ME! Several rounds hit around me, one striking me in the left shin. Terrapin stopped. “Kool” did not. He ran into the road and was struck by a car, his “Captains hat” twirling through the air like a frisbee, as “ Skyrockets in flight, afternoon delight” is blasting on the stereo. This song always gives me a laugh when I hear it.

I always remember the scene from PCU when he locks the faculty in the room after turning this song up and locking the stereo cabinet.

I heard that there may have been cocaine and stuff at Woodstock.

There was so much LSD the wet earth was described as Lysergic mud by one writer.

Ok, since we said music to be ashamed of .... I recall my teenage years, having a friend named Tom and spending a lot of nights at his house. We would usually stay in the upstairs, which was kind of a bonus room that was an older brother%’s room who had mostly moved out (I recall one night he came and stayed with his girlfriend, so Tom and I went to his downstairs bedroom). His brother had a stereo with a turntable at one end of the room, and I can recall that it frequently played the one album from the group Air Supply.... Never really recalled ever listening to them later in life, but that does date me and my age.

Nearly anything by Garfunkel And Oates would qualify, but posting their songs here would probably get this thread exiled to the Basement.

Man what a thread! Not bragging but I have several lol. I really do love all types of music, classical to some rap, here is a couple.

Pop music is “pop” because it is popular.

Nothing to be ashamed of.

"h'ain't we got all the fools in town on our side? and ain't that majority enough in any town?" -Mark Twain in Huckleberry Finn.

..... sums up my thoughts perfectly about "popular" music.

What, no ABBA?

This one. There's only two female singer/songwriters that have existed on earth that I think have voices from heaven:

Karen Carpenter is one.

Sarah McLachlan is the other:

Edit: Not really ashamed. But some guys may think I should voluntarily revoke my man card for liking Sarah McLachlan. However............ It's her voice. Her dang voice. She's got a set of lungs that I think no one else could ever rival except.......... Karen Carpenter and I think it's a close one at that.

Another one is Gin and Juice by Hayseed Dixie, a bluegrass version of a rap song.

What, no ABBA?

She has a great voice no doubt. However, there's only two female vocalists for me...... Karen Carpenter and Sarah McLachlan.

Yeah man. I stayed up too late LMAO with this thread, probably a little too much at my own jokes. I was referring to Sha Na Na's keyboard player rushing the song into ludicrous speed. He must have been pretty excited. :D I was 10 when Woodstock happened, so that was before my amateur pharmacological days and I was still listening to The Beatles and The Monkees. Thanks for starting this thread. It's great to get others' take on music that's always been stuck with them as a guilty favorite. What a hoot.

Not much point in posting a Beatles song I suppose so I'll just "drop this right here":

ABBA was a bit before my time, but your Bobby McFerrin post reminded me of the George Harrison video that was on MTV at the time, in fact there were two versions of it and I hated both.

One interesting thing that I experienced... when I was 16 a guy named Dennis moved into my town and renovated a studio apartment on the town square. He was a VP of CBS records in Europe before they were bought by Sony. He retired at something like 40 and moved to our area, which was near the town his family lived in. On his walls were actual framed gold records and letters written to him from famous musicians including George Harrison. He had pictures of himself with many other musicians. He claimed he actually produced some of Ozzy Osborne’s work.

I once kicked one of my friends out of my car and made them walk home for talking crap about me listening to Ace Of Base.
I worked in a music store, back when they still had those in the 90s, when they came out here in the US. They were really popular with the younger kids, too young to go to the clubs, that wanted dance music. Apparently they were hated in Sweden.

I miss the days when people could earn a decent living traveling with a real band
There are a few left, here’s 3 real bands we’ve gone to in the not too far past.
My favorite and, ~a dozen members

Lyle Lovett & his large band, the show was better than we expected, we’ll go again. Also laugh at his songs “She’s no Lady” & “Church”. @Geezer this one’s for you, song starts @ 0:40

This was a great show

Don’t judge me.... It was 1990, you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing it. I’ll still listen to it occasionally in the truck when I’m all alone lol:D
