Picked up this thing up Friday from FG&G, along with a lighter that looks like a miniature version of it. Couldn't stand the light colored/ spotty finish on the stock and forend. Stripped the finish with citristrip, used gunstock color stain and 4 coats of tru-oil. Still cheap wood, just a little nicer looking. Ordered safety delete plug and a metal mag follower. Found a couple spots where the barrel bands go through that the bluing was gone, cold blued that. Was gonna smooth a few internal things, but with a very smooth 3lb trigger, im not even thinking of it.
Very impressed with the overall bluing and metal work on this Winchester replica.

Lighter actually works pretty nice. Tsc has them. And I don't, I probably could, I don't shoot enough to make it worth while. I do have some hot 357 bear ammo that I'm sure would go pretty well out of it. I believe it's a 16" barrel.

Do you reload?
If so, you will be impressed what 357mag will do from a 20" barrel.
You can get 30-30 ballistics from it.

Doubt that. Maybe approaching something smaller like 222 energy figures, so, still no slouch but 3030 numbers remain out of reach.

I actually just sold a 464 30-30 because I didn't care for the cost of ammo for plinking and shooting targets, and I've got a decent 357 revolver to go with this

Did the safety delete plug and ditched the plastic follower for a stainless one from Steve's guns. It has a half cock hammer safety, the bolt safety kept getting flipped on by Accident. Need to figure out a way of getting rid of the red dot in the bolt too. The plug was just matte black, I polished it, then cold blued it hoping it would match better.

Have you taken apart the 92? I got 2, one that was complexity refinished with new springs and follower and the other one I put the Steve's (I think that who makes it) trigger set. Trying to get that gun together was impossible for me. Had to take it to a smith to put back together. Then I read about the dental floss trick but I do not want to try it.

I've not taken it apart yet besides to stain and refinish the wood. The action seemed smooth enough on this one to not need much. Rossi rifleman forums has some really good how to's on reassembly. I shortened the mag spring since apparently they leave them excessively long, particularly for the 16" trapper model like this one. I think with some use it will get even smoother with use.
