As Triad news station WFMY live-streamed a third day of anti-police violence protests in downtown Greensboro Monday, a number of comments jumped out at those watching the Facebook feed.

“I’m about to get in my car and drive over some of these people,” wrote a man identifying himself as Benjamin Benelli Roberts of Thomasville.

“My shotgun is ready to start shooting,” he also wrote.

Ive heard about this sort of thing - people post something, someone does a screenshot/screengrab/whatever and then starts researching that person and reaching out to their employer etc.
It's crummy as heck

This has been a very popular tactic of the leftists on social media for a few years now. They look for someone they don't like to say something inflammatory or unpopular, and then a group of them will hunt down employers, associates, clubs/groups the person is a member of, and then start a harassment campaign to get the offender fired from their job and isolated from their friends and associates. The goal of the left is to force their opponents to be quiet, and go into hiding with any words that do not fit the popular narrative. The end result is the progressive platform appears to be the majority opinion, even if they're actually just a very loud minority.

Sadly, its proven to be very effective, and its one of the reasons you don't see a lot of folks openly attacking the left and their opinions on social media. Folks don't want to loose their jobs for telling some feminist dance theory major with blue hair to go pound sand.

I feel like Trump's election was an example of this in action. All the mainstream media and talking heads were predicting a Hillary win by a landslide, but many of the Trump voters were folks who never advertised who they were going to vote for.

On one hand, what this guy wrote was stupid. It can relatively easily be seen as communicating threats, which we all know is a big no-no. So for him, he was a moron for posting it.

On the other hand, it is part of what they call "cancel culture" that has been going around. If I cannot defeat your logic with reason and facts, then I will destroy your character or life by any means necessary. Even if this means I go back 5-10-20 years to find some random thing you posted or said and come wave it around today like it is still relevant.

One main issue I have with it is that this goes both ways....the left isnt the only one who plays this game. We will go back 40 years to a bill someone passed and throw it up as "SEE THEY ARE RACIST!" just as quick as the left will pull a sound byte from 20 years ago to prove that Trump is a sexist. It is predicated on the myth that people and their ideas and actions do not change and the context in which something is said or an action taken is still 100% relevant today. Heck, around 20 years ago I was a fresh out of college moron who had the world figured out....today I am a married father of 4 who has no idea what is going on. We arent the same person.

I read this morning that a Cumberland County woman had been arrested for her remarks on social media. The news blip didn't expound on what was said.

Some tips:

GMX.COM for free email that doesn't require a phone number.
TEXTNOW.COM for a free phone number that doesn't require a phone number to verify.

Now you can get an account most anywhere that requires a phone or email for verification (Facebook, google, etc.)

Never use your real name.

EDIT: I paid to be here so that part is real

Yeah-
The idiots at Discovery channel did a similar thing Tuesday evening at 9pm. First 9 minutes of all their stations had a black screen. I put YT TV on pause, went and did something else for 15 minutes then ff through all the beginning BS and commercials later.
But I didn't go making threats afterwards, just went on with my life.

A,
Well done.
Your post, like almost all, is very spot on and presents a great perspective on these situations.

Youre right, people love tearing others down, example is we see people catch a contract with a major league team and then people start going back years to find something sexist, racist, or homophobic that they did.

And your last bit, yes, both sides will do it, like with Northam's black face etc

Hope you and your family of 6 are doing well and safe.

Thanks for the kind words, and yes, we are managing!

I think things like this bug me the most because despite my temper, I really do enjoy a solid debate when possible. But somewhere along the way we (in general) have forgotten that people can change their minds on topics. Heck, I vividly recall going to gun shows with my dad as a kid and having a "Why would anyone need an AR15?" type of mindset. I thought those plastic pistols were ugly and stupid. So I bet dollars to donuts if someone had taped me talking 20 years ago they would come out now with "BUT YOU SAID NO ONE NEEDS AN AR!" Yet...here I am today recommending most people get at least 1, 2 if they can, and 3 just because they are fun.

I think the problem too, at times, is the SELECTIVE outrage to people changing.
Like, they only are ok with changing if it's (further) meeting their opinions. Heaven forbid you go the opposite way.
Trump was anti-gun 20 years or whatever ago when he wrote that book, now, he says, he's pro gun. I know, that's debatable, whatever, that's not my point/message. But many gun folks were totally ok with it, he 'came around' to 'our side.'
But then we take a politician who 30 years ago supported a bill we dont agree with and they'll never right that wrong in our eyes.

Consider the 3 kinds of violence. Economic, Incarceration, and Physical. Until recently, the government had a monopoly of exercising this violence without repercussions (beyond maybe the ballot box). We’ve seen some new government entries in the game. Deciding during the pandemic which business is permitted to be open. Mandated self-quarantine. The protests have been about the government exercising incarceration and physical against protesters who started as economic but are moving to physical.
But the game changer is the cancel culture. By demonitizing YouTube and getting people fired, social media has entered the game of violence having no consequences.

First, you dont post this kind of stupid shit on an open public forum, ESPECIALLY if you do it using your real name........

Second, see the FIRST.........

We live in a right to work state as well, so if you decided to double park and pissed off the boss he could fire you, or if he just decided you were superfluous to the work load, he could fire you......

In the end, it boils down to "play stupid games, win stupid prizes "

This is why, especially with certain inflammatory topics, I just keep my thoughts to myself. If you know me, you already know where I stand & if you don't know me, it's nunya bidness.
I have really been working on that this year. I still find it impossible to stay quiet when folks are straight up lying or repeating falsehoods.

So what I hear is that it's okay to say off the wall sht but don't use your real name? Don't stand up to reinforce your opinion but run and hide behind whatever you can find? Basically live in fear that you might say something that offends someone else even though it represents your opinion? Do I have that about right?

The founders published under pseudonyms to get their opinions out

I think their point was that you are free to say what you like, but you have to accept the consequences. If you threaten to kill a bunch of people, nobody has to keep you around afterwards.
