In my defense: I was left unsupervised in a gun store...

The good: it was $20, it’s not damascus, and it’s not completely off face.

E086C0FD-D565-4526-A0EE-2CB8C896A3E2.jpeg

The bad: everything else about it. Mismatched hardware, cracked and broken wood that has been repaired with a piece of pallet wood, top lever is left of center and still not tight, bores have some pitting... Shitpile.

And then there’s this, I don’t even know...

Don’t be shy, post some pictures. We won’t judge. We will mercilessly ridicule you, but we won’t judge.

honestly I have to find it. My wife's grandfather kept it at his living room door. We shot dang near everything you can think of with it. Even the men in the trees when the sundowners started.

I wouldn't trust that door lock too far if I was you...……...

Previous owner of the house used to lock her dogs in the garage during storms. They chewed the heck out of this door when they freaked out. I meant to fix it once we got settled in after moving. That was 12 years ago...

That butt pad looks like that shotgun may have spent time a little too close to the stove.

That should clean up right nice with some elbow grease. Oxpho-blue from brownells aught to bring back those barrels and receiver after some buffing. In the end maybe some shell reducers to .410 and bang away.

Good luck! and keep the pictures coming!

Paging @type44
Could you help me identify this.... thing? I apologize for making you lay eyes on it.
It’s marked: Enders Special Service
Am I correct to assume that it’s a rebranded Crescent? And which one? Am I also correct that it could potentially be shootable with light loads?

I let my wife go unsupervised in a gun store once. I only took my eyes off her for two minutes, I swear.

Damages in four figures.

I am confused here. I can see calling it "damages" in a dress store or a jewelry store but in a gun store the correct term would be "investments". :D

First assessment. I believe that the action is salvageable. The bite will need to be tightened up but when the action is fully closed the barrel/receiver gap is .002” or less.
There will be a lot of work making pins and screws but I am fine with that.

The biggest issue is the stock. I am pretty sure it is beyond help.

The buttplate is made out of something black that looks like a painted marshmallow. Behind that was a 1/8 piece of some kind of rubber. The whole thing was held on with glue and drywall screws. Classy.

But wait! I gets better!

Or in this case, way worse. Yes, that is yellow pine.

And then, for the grand finale! Drum roll......

home-done hollowing to lighten up the stock?

Agree. Looks like the factory lightening wasn't enuff so someone did some more. I found that on the double I am working on all though not to that extreme.

My stock is toast too. Pun intended. Gonna have to make a new one should be an experience. Guess we can trade notes.

Not much to report today.
I almost forgot, I pulled another double from the shit pile. This one is a smaller gauge over/under and with slightly shorter barrels.

I have no idea, it was cheap too ($25).
After fixing the barrel selection mechanism I found a use for it.

That should help keep the stray cat that has been pissing in my driveway away.

So anyway, the shotgun...
Today was bath day. All the parts took their turn in the ultrasonic cleaner filled with water+vinegar+simple green. It works really well at removing grime and rust. Let it run for 10 minutes, quick scrub with a little wire brush, repeat.
Before and after of firing pins, after the first 10 minutes.

It’s an important part of the job and in this case I really needed to do it so I can properly fit the screw, pins, and whatever else needs to be done.

Most of the metal is in pretty good shape with the worst of the pitting on the side plates.

77F4A302-66C0-4DED-9DF9-29EDF553366A.jpeg

And then, disaster struck, I got bored of the tedious process.

8B05A041-6490-4612-BB19-DA91D3C0ED89.jpeg

Oops.

A few things motivated my decision:
- I wanted a coach gun
- The worst of the barrel pitting was near the muzzle (?)
- The muzzles were really thin and way crooked
- I was bored...

I know I will give you your money back on that one. I have wanted one for years. I concur with @Alabamacoastie on this one. Where is this pile you speak of?

I just got lucky and walked into my LGS as they were inventorying the last batch of evidence guns that some department had just brought in. They know me well and let me dig through it. The nice guns get cleaned up and sold. Some get cerakoated or parkerized. The shit pile is used for parts or sold to idiots like me.
It’s a gamble though as you have no idea what you are buying.
No doubt that they are cutting me a deal though as I have been shopping there for years and bring them business.

I used to have a relationship with Lawmen’s like that, until Safariland bought them.

Congrats on the doubleguns.

.002” is not much. Are you planning to TIG the hook and rejoin it?

Restocking a side plate is not fun. Why not soak the thing in acetone for a couple weeks, mill off the pine and replace with walnut, plug the weight saving measures. Can’t hurt.

If the holes goes all the way through, cowboy loads would be fine in my opinion.

Thanks. I was actually thinking about making an oversized pin but the Tig option might be easier... I didn’t think about that.
I was however thinking about welding up the bite (as opposed to pushing metal with a hammer). I haven’t decided yet. I need to reassemble everything in the white first before I start fixing anything.

As for the stock, I have an idea...

What's your opinion on Aguila minishells for these older doubles?

Not good from my experience. I tried them and had several squib’s which left the wad in the barrel (aka obstruction). That was early on. Maybe they’re better now. Over the counter, the low noise low recoil Winchester AA’s are a VERY light load.

A new shotgun project just fell on my lap, so this one is on the back burner for a while.
But if someone wants to take it one I would trade for some 22/9/38/357/12/223 ammo, Glock mags, small pistol primers, something?
