NASCAR bans Confederate flag at events, race tracks
NASCAR will no longer allow the Confederate battle flag to fly at its events and race tracks following nationwide protests against racial inequality in the wake of George Floyd’s death, the company said Wednesday.

The decision came after Bubba Watson, the NASCAR Cup Series' only black driver, and others called on the stock car circuit to ban the flag. The sight of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events was a divisive topic among fans in recent years, with critics arguing it is a symbol of slavery and racial oppression.

“The presence of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry,” NASCAR said in a statement. “Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the Confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”



NASCAR President Steve Phelps pledged last Sunday that the stock car circuit would take steps to combat racial injustice. Wallace was set to run his No. 43 car with a “Black Lives Matter” paint scheme at a race Wednesday night at Martinsville Speedway.

The premier stock car circuit has considered banning the flag in the past. Former chairman Brian France sought to ban the symbol in 2015, only to reverse course after pushback from fans.

And the world has truly divided by zero and gone full retard.

They aren’t wrong. If folks cared about the symbol of their heritage being stolen by racists they should have protected it.

“The battle flag is an important reminder of heritage in the south and of the sacrifices made by our forefathers, it’s not generally a symbol of overt racism.”

But to be fair, removing the flag isn’t going to accomplish anything and as Americans become less and less connected with the mechanical nature of cars the “sport” of NASCAR will ride quiet into history anyway, having accomplished nothing for people of color in America. But you can’t blame for trying.

I'd put money on Bubba Wallace leading at least 1 lap in the "Black Lives Matter" car tonight at Martinsville. He's a mid pack driver at best.

The news media will have plenty to talk about come Labor Day.

I don't think NASCAR'S purpose should be to "accomplish" something for people of color. Seems to me it should be up to the individual to have the skill to "accomplish" something themselves.

Although their DRIVE for DIVERSITY program has probably provided opportunities to several drivers who would have otherwise never had a ride.

Interestingly Kyle Larson who is a product of the DfD program was banned from NASCAR for using a racial phrase that probably would have been brushed off had it been said by Bubba Wallace

NASCAR is close to death. One decade from being a small local track in attendance. Their appeal was regional except certain northern locations. Had they continued instead of building super tracks in middle and western regions they had a base. It was cultural and so was the Confederate flag. These actions will not sit well with those who are diehards still spending on racing experiences. Black Americans don’t give a turd about no damn racing in circles.

Nascar has to jump on the bandwagon to stay popular. They are trying to keep ticket sales and make money through algorithms and sponsor money etc.
The bandwagon has room for alot of people.

NASCAR is trying harder to be PC, the reason is so they can sell it off for big money.

I can remember 20 years ago, races being sold out every week. Now they can't hardly give tickets away. I know Charlotte has removed or covered over tons of seats. They can't sell them and they don't want the place to look empty. Hope this decision finishes them off.

Folks stop going to races and the higher-ups at Nascar will be scratching their heads, trying to figure out how to attract more fans...

He used to rent the same 3 spots in the infield and have 50 people there. They won't survive without these core fans. Oh well, I haven't seen an exciting race since the '90's.

It's been on us for years but it has come in little spurts so nobody paid attention. I'm almost glad I'm long in the tooth, don't have many more years to put up with this crap. Unfortunately it is damn near impossible to to get a 17 year old grandson motivated to learn the stuff he is going to need to survive. Too many hormones and teenage girls.......

If people ever cared about properly representing history, they wouldn't be using the battle flag that wasn't ever officially adopted to represent the Confederacy.

Another sign that Nascar will fold very soon. Or they can just move all their races to tracks in the west and north. No skin off my A** either way because I quit watch several years ago anyway.
