The Epic CFF Mountain Bike Thread

That's how KK and I felt. We rode six days in a row; by Sunday we needed a day of rest.

On a different subject, what do you guys think one of these is worth in excellent condition? I have one leftover from the Motobecane and can't use it so may as well sell it.

Ball park $150, they look to be going for about $225 new. The tougher part about shopping for rear shocks is just finding one that fits your frame, since there are so many different lengths and configurations.

Rode Academy on Monday for the first time. Academy is a steaming pile of horse**** that should be set on fire, pissed all over, and then bulldozed so that someone who is not a completely inept monkey can design a new trail that is more than than just a bunch of haphazard lines drawn on a map. But, that's just my opinion.

Riding Mazeppa on Tuesday restored balance to The Force.

Lol! Academy is actually kinda fun on an Ebike so is East Main but both of those suck on an analog bike. Only thing fun on Mazeppa road is GoPro. Have you tried LKN state park?

I have! KK and I rode a few of the trails with Mike Overlay last year. They were fun and Mike did a great job leading the ride.

If you don't like Mazeppa then we may not be on the same page but I get that Mazeppa might be boring on an ebike. :)

I went to two semi-local shops to pick up a hardtail earlier today. I gave myself a $2500 budget. The Specialized shop was sold out of size L and M in my price range. He did have a full suspension S-Works model just under $6k though. The Trek shop had one had a low budget no-namer brand in size M and nothing else available. I called the Trek store in Spartanburg and the guy said that they didn't have anything in M to L in my price range and only a couple of other bikes that were in the $3200+ range. All of them mentioned zero shipments coming in. Estimates of "maybe" end of July on up until December to get hardtails back in.

Have you guys ordered complete bikes from any online places before? Specifically looking for someone that will ship to my home. Thanks!

CHRIS

Even the online guys are getting empty on inventory. Firm believer in local shops for after sales support, but some decent deals can be had online.

I’ve bought 2 bikes D2C, Airborne and YT. 2 friends also bought Airbornes on my recommendation, and I helped them assemble them. So I’ve done 4 D2C bikes, no regrets at all. I love the value proposition from D2C and enjoy doing my own maintenance.

That said, pretty much everyone is sold out right now. I looked around a moderate amount 2wks ago for a friend but could find any Larges in stock. YT said October for most. He ended up buying a Giant locally for around $3500. Sadly you’re at the mercy of inventory right now. I’d say be patient and actively search used deals if you’re trying to maximize your dollar. Otherwise, just start calling all shops and be prepared to drive.

this, I stumbled into the Chameleon last week. Had all but given up and ready to wait till Oct-Dec for the 2021 models to come out. Call of them within driving distance and be ready to buy if you come across something. If found in Gastonia/Belmont/Charlotte area, I can help shuttle it to you

Hellva deal if anyone is hunting. Wont last long at all

Is $2999 too much? In stock in L, and the specs are good:

I have to ask: are you sure you want to spend that much on a hardtail? You can get a good full suspension in that range.

Wow, something wonky going on with their site. Earlier this morning it was available in L (in black).

Maybe they had a database refresh scheduled today.

edit - now that I think about it I noticed that when I was looking at the Capra, too. It would switch from in stock to preorder and then back pretty regularly.

How tall are you? I have a medium 2008 Kona Explosif frame (26 inch wheels) here that's gathering dust. I have enough parts to build a bike. Older school setup but that is a very nice frame. I used it as a single speed for a couple years.

ETA: My frame desperately needs a paint job. I'd suggest considering something else. My buddy has a Kona 29er steel hardtail that he doesn't ride. Size large. If that interests you, I can see if he'd sell it.

Reading this thread reminds me how much I miss the activity. The quality and price of the technology is insane now compared to when I was riding.

Expect a lot of really nice used bikes on the market in 6 months or so.

Our shop is selling out of 3k$ bikes because all the cheaper stuff has been gone. Full suspension bikes that will be used to ride around their neighborhood.

KK and I are planning to go to the WWC this afternoon, Mazeppa Saturday morning, and somewhere Sunday morning.

When I was riding front suspension just came out; rear suspension was almost unheard of. I had a Gary Fisher X-Caliber/XTR with a Manitou suspension fork; at the time, THAT was a $2,200 bike. I sold it a few years ago for $300, for parts.

In the early 90s I worked PT in a bike shop halfway between Duke and UNC; those kids were buying $2K bikes for campus cruisers.

But I really do miss riding.

What time you planning on doing Mazeppa? I’m itching to ride but all 3 of my riding friends are out of town.
