June/July 2020 50 yard rimfire challenge

I am trying to post the battleship target! I haven't tried doing this from one forum post to another.

Need some rules to go along with that Battleship .pdf ...

Standard CFF Monthly Rimfire Benchrest Challenge Rules
- Target Size: Standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper
- Target distance: 50 yards
- Any shooting position you'd like
- Front rests, bipods, front/rear shooting bags, bunny ears, ... etc. are all ok.
- No full length rifle mechanical rail/sled type rests allowed
- Iron sights or optics of your choice are all allowed
- All done on the honor system. Shoot it, score it, post it.
- Winner chooses the target and challenge for the next month.
- Post copy of your target and setup and ammo used.

Did anyone decide on a point system?

I tossed out an idea in the other thread.

1 point per target
Points double for each target if you sink the ship

Examples:
1. The one hole boat is automatically 2 points if you hit it, since you sunk it
2. If you hit 3/4 on the battleship, you get 3 points
3. If you hit 4/4 on the baffle ship, you get 8 points

Tie-breaker could be number of shots that hit a ship but not in the dots?

Are we going with 2 chances per sheet or count up the entire sheet?
My vote is one “fleet” per attempt. 15 shots. Same thing as if we were battling each other.

Enter as many times as you’d like, twice per target.

But for those of y’all shooting the expensive stuff, one entry is much cheaper this go ‘round than the last one. :D

So it could be 15 shots for score with 30 points for a high score. Tie breaker ?? Best score on same target sheet??

Yes on the first.

I think that tie breaker forces somebody to shoot another group they might not plan on.

I suggested one tie-breaker above. Haven’t seen any others suggested. Heck, you could even just do something like whose birthday is earliest in the year. Or who posted their winning score first.

Tiebreakers... That is a good question...
We might need a couple if they are based on the shots. The fewer the shots, like this one, the more likely there is to be a tie. A couple of these guys have been on fire lately, and I think someone said the targets were 1/2". If so, some people are likely to clear the target, so it will need to be something that can be used if the entire target is cleared.

I would prefer it had something to do with the shooting. Like cost of ammo (which we have used before but never actually had to go to) or even lowest scope magnification used! Or even both if people are using the same ammo (like CCISV). While having a couple tie breakers seems unlikely, I would love to see them be needed, even if that scope magnification knocks me out!

To be clear, I will be shooting my .22 pellet rifle as I did last month, so if we used ammo costs and I actually tie the 22lr shooter, I would have that in my favor. That being said, it is a pellet rifle vs 22lr. Just wanted to be sure I was very up front with that, in case anyone liked the idea.

Just shot today and don’t think I did better than 10, so you shouldn’t need to worry about my ammo cost. I didn’t think it was that windy either. My rifle has gone goofy the last couple weeks.

So for clarification: is this 15 allowed shots, or shoot until you sink the ship?

If it's 15 shots max, then I'd say the highest number of shots completely inside the circle is the tie breaker. Akin to x-count on an NRA target.
If it's shoot-until-you-sink-the-ship, then I'd say lowest number of total shots is the tie breaker

Guess I'll kick it off. Shot it 3-4 times and this was my best. Kind of interesting strategy because you definitely want to sink the big ships first for maximum points and take your misses on the little ones. So I ended shooting the larger ships until they were all gone or I ran out of bullets LOL. Also, still trying to figure out what ammo my 455 likes. This was shot with SK pistol match. I think it liked the rifle match better though. Score: 24

CZ 455 tacticool: stock
Athlon midas tac 6-24x50
SK pistol match

Do we need to clarify, that we are shooting one shot at each bullseye? Total of 15 shots at each set of ships.

So one shot per bullseye? I like it better if you can shoot however many shots at whatever bull's-eyes you like. (15 total) Let's you up the strategy. Either way though

I assumed that was understood. Guess not.

Doh! Well damn, guess I'll have to do it again...

Edit to say that I'm saying we only get 15 shots, but can choose what bulls-eyes we want to hit. If we miss one we can shoot at it again but then wont be able to shoot them all, but can prioritize the big ships for points.

But if there is six holes in a ship with five bullseyes it would void all points for that ship.

I gave this one a quick try this evening. I shot 2 sheets. Had my best score and my worst score on the same sheet. High score was 21, low score was 9. The other sheet was a 14 and 15. It was fun and I will probably try it again. I was shooting my CZ 455, bipod on front, bag in the rear. Athlon Helos BTR scope, set on 16 power. Geco Match 22 ammo. I forgot to take a picture of the rifle today, but I have an older picture of same setup.20200607_195653.jpg 20200509_073012.jpg

I shot a couple weeks ago and didn’t do better than 10. Nothing was going right. Shot an 18 and honestly thought I might not beat that. But after the rain yesterday, I went back out for 2 more tries... no possible way I beat this (but I will keep trying!) We decided against shooting the same rifle today for social distancing, so I’m glad I ran out yesterday.

Shooting an AGT Uragan .22 pellet rifle with 18.1gr JSB pellets. Athlon ETR scope and Accutac bipod. Wind affects these way more than it did my .30, so these targets are much harder now. Almost No wind yesterday helped.

Top target... Only missed the 1-shot boat, so I scored a 28. I couldn’t be happier!

1st Pic is just a zoomed in version of the 2nd pic of the full card. One at the bottom wasn’t nearly as good! Wind wasn’t much different but the pellets were not cooperating!

I am waiting for my new scope mount so I can try again. Been without a scope for just over a week.

Lets see some more targets. Doesn’t matter how many you hit here, we are just having fun!

I didn't make it out this weekend, but I made it today!:) Best score was 24. I was shooting Eley Club with my CZ 455, bipod on front, bag in rear. I also shot a few rounds at my swing target at 100 yards. 25 shots, but only hit bullseye 5 times. Swing target is 8" plate with 1/2" hole in center and it pops up when you hit it. Lots of fun! ;)20200708_221404.jpg 20200708_221313.jpg 20200708_202416.jpg 20200708_202440.jpg 20200708_195714.jpg

Good shooting! Only missed one. I said at the beginning that some people are going to clear the card. Somebody is going to do it.

And fitting that 1/2” target at 100yds ain’t as easy as 1/2” at 50yds!! That is for sure! Sort of like a field target with the reset.

Maybe I need to try it again. That was my first time trying Eley Club. I have some Wolf Target and some SK Standard that I could try.

Tried again with the 18gr pellets, but couldn’t top my other score. Missed on the 4 and 5 boats. I then tested ammo for 4 hours at 50 and 100yds, so I might try some different ammo next time and see if I can clear the board.

I had so many errors in there, it really changed what I was saying. Had to fix it.

I gave it another try today using my Eley CMP ammo. Didn't beat my last score, best I could do with the Eley CMP ammo was 21. Ammo seemed pretty good, I hoped it might be better. Had a few fliers. Same rifle as before, CZ 455 and Athlon Helos BTR Scope. Either way it was fun to get out and shoot!:)20200719_182548.jpg

BigWaylon, what's the range report? :D
Oh yeah...I took pics of the targets but never scored them. Nobody hold their breath, I ain’t winning. :D

I’ll get them up in a bit.

Tried shooting again today, but with the heat we have had lately, my speeds are not optimal. Still missing 2-3 at best, but usually more. I caught that one target this month on an optimal string. I might try again tomorrow.
