Fun with a thermometer

I've got some digital Thermometers which track highest and lowest temps over a 24 hour period.

I'll dig them up and set then in different places in the car, with and without sin screen in the windows.

But I can tell you there other day that lollypop thermometer you see above read 140 F after work one day last week, sunny and in the 70s.

Today was partly cloudy, high of 88F.

I have 3 AcuRight Model 00613 humidity/ temperature monitors. They track highest and lowest peaks for each over a 24 hour period, and humidity trends as well.

I put one on my center dash, one on my consul armrest, and one on the floorboard in the back seat.

The dash reached 158F.
The armrest reached 144F.
The floorboard reached 106F.

Here's what one looks like. They're about $10 at Lowes:

In that "proof" thread somebody said Chief needed a new hobby. I think he found one.

You have NO idea!

I put the digital thermometers in the same places today, only this time with the sunscreen in the windshield. I was hoping for similar sun/temperatures today for comparison, but it's completely overcast and cooler.

Ah, well.

Today's high, 84F, overcast all day.

Sun screen was in the windshield.

The dash reached 115F.
The armrest reached 113F.
The floorboard reached 90F.

so, about 40, 30, and 15 ° difference from the sunny day
Do you know anybody who has the same year/model car as you?

Ya know. Car AC’s are about twice to three times more powerful than needed for the amount of space they cool. The reason is the number of uninsulated windows.

If car manufacturers would use double wall insulated glass like we do in homes we wouldn’t need such large AC’s in vehicles.

I happen to own a suspiciously similar car to the Chief's. In fact I parked next to him today. We're starting our own used Buick collection.

Lots of temperature enthusiasts here. I too enjoy a good temperature.

When you get as old and these guys, you start fixating on stuff like that. Some guys have their lawns, some guys love hardwood floors. Us, we're into measuring temperatures.

interesting.
parking a very similar model in a similar place gives you the option of evaluating the efficacy of the sunscreen by removing the variables of internal volume to window/roof area, window size, etc. Assume that the sun is effectively infinite distance away and rays are parallel so that once the sun is UP and one car isn't casting a shadow on the other, that's equal too...

I'm down with this! I'm not sure how @GoWolfpack would feel about being roped into this, even though he's an engineer too!

Yeah. And window tint does a good job as well, some more than others. And if it's not going to rain, cracking the windows will help keep the heat down, too. (I'll check that out later, when I can get come consecutive days of uniform weather conditions.)

The color of the vehicle, inside and out, also has a pretty dramatic effect. I can't do much for the exterior color, but I suppose I could cover the seats and dash with white sheets and see how that works out. I suspect the major advantage of using sun shades in the windshield is to keep the sun off the dash...which is traditionally black, of all colors, the worst for absorbing light in a vehicle. Again...consecutive days of uniform weather conditions needed!

Yall are funny. I've been monitoring temps for a living for the past 4 years. Prior to that I did Scientific Refrigeration and cryogenics repair for 15 years. I've watched too many thermometers to do it as a hobby. :p

What are you talking about? I spent 2 decades monitoring temperatures, pressures, levels, and power for naval reactors. This stuff NEVER gets old, man!

;););)

Nuclear reactor getting warm = BOOM!

Scientific stuff warming up = bad day

The two are not equal. You needed to be OCD in your case. ;)

To segue a bit from automobile or submarine propulsion applications ...

These folks supposedly monitored cloacal temperatures of (tethered) komodo dragons. Tethered or not, this is not my idea of fun with thermometers!!

Nuclear reactor getting warm is kinda the whole point!

Might be @Chdamn 's, though...
