Have a few rifles in 762x39 have a bunch of brass, a pound of 4198, and a pound of 1680

Anyone reloading the 762x39 with .308 pills,
if so any input on what you like, Bullet ? Weight ? Powder ?

Thanks

Was out at the range and there were 2 guys reloading 7.62x39 with .308's bullets, their barrels were .310 but they were getting decent accuracy from 308 bullets.
it seemed strange to me, I would have thought the bullet would tumble, and not have as much velocity, but it actually worked decent for them just for cheap plinking.

Then today I was looking up loads in Hornady's 10th edition reloading manual, and they showed 123g-125g in .310 and 150g in .308 under 762x32 M43 loads
thats what got me wondering if anyone other than the guys I met were shooting .308 bullets from a .310 barrel

If what I was told is true, it depends on where the individual rifle was made. Overseas it's 0.311, if made in America it's 0.308, cause Merica!
I have a few 0.311 bullets a friend gave me for my 7.62 that he pulled and replaced with 0.308 for his Ruger.

I actually just shot my first x39 reloads today and i sized them all in 308. 125 grain speers and 147 m80s. 125s did pretty dang good in amd 65 and Sam7, 147s not so much. Looking to get some berrys plated for cheap .311 plinking.

If you don't mind, what did you use for powder and charge weight for the Speer 125's ?

Accurate 1680 which is supposed to be the american gold standard for x39. I think 26 grains was the best load.

What rifles are you reloading for?
Ruger uses .308 barrels, Com Block uses .310/.311.

There are so many rumors about Rugers having .308 barrels. Some do, I am sure. But I have an old Mini-30 that, according to all the internet experts, was supposed to be a .308 barrel. So, I tried working up several loads using different .308 bullets. I found some decent loads, but the Mini-30 has never been known for being better than minute-of-pie-plate. Later, I acquired some Cerrosafe and slugged the barrel - turns out it is .3105. I have not bothered to go back to try that one with .310-.311 bullets yet.

With a good load (not low pressure) there should be some bullet obturation that will help engage the rifling, even with .308 bullets. You won't know until you try.

Don't assume an American 7.62x39 is .308. They have to know that there is a high likelihood that someone will use the cheap x39 ammo that is so prevalent, so the gun has to be designed to handle it. The best way is to simply make the bore .310-.311. I suggest slugging the bore to be sure. Cerrosafe is very easy to use, you can even cast the chamber with it if you want to.

Would .310 bullets fired through a .308 barrel be much of a problem? I would think you would have more problems shooting a .308 bullet through a .310 barrel

.310 in a .308 might build up some serious pressure !

If it did, I would hope that there would be all sorts of warnings in the loading manuals and on the firearms with .308 barrels. I seem to remember that it was fairly common to fire 8mm Mauser rounds through a Springfield and that the Pederson device used 32 Auto ammo in Springfields. The best situation is to get the best match between bullet and barrel, but I have never heard of any problems with military ammo out of a Mini 30. I suppose I need to slug the barrel of mine to see what it actually is. I load 308 bullets for my Mini 30 and use military ammo in my AK.

There is some good reading on this link of possible pressure problems

I bought my Mini 30 used, and it came with a fat-50 ammo box full of steel cases ammo. Not knowing anything at the time, I assumed it was ok to shoot it, so I did. Besides having trouble sometimes setting off the hard Russian primers, it shot fine. Then I read that only quality American Ammo should be used in the Mini 30, and several reports on the internet suggested mine was a 308 barrel, when in fact it is 310. I just checked some Winchester x39 and found they were the same diameter as the cheap Russian stuff.

A while back Century arms built a bunch of Polish Tantals they used barrels that were chambered in 5.45x39 but had the American .224 bore
so some barrel company that had a bunch of .224 blanks chambered them for 5.45x39, every one of them shot like crap and the bullets would tumble
( ask me how I know )

I cant imagine a reputable US gun manufacturer building a rifle chambered in 7.62x39 with a .308 bore, maybe some small company
trying to save money, with the liability I cant see something like that happen from a large US manufacturer.

I think theres a lot of misinformation that gets retold on the internet.
has anyone ever posted actual data/pictures of these US 7.62x39 .308 barrels out there ?

I would feel safer using a .308 in a .310-.311 bore, but I would be real careful trying to shove a .310-.311 bullet down a .308 hole.

But that's just me, one thing I learned in life is to be careful what I shove in holes :p
