And they’ll put Odumba’s picture on it ...

ETA: I am guessing the reason coin supplies are short right now is because the economy was pretty much kneecapped mid March and people stopped normal spending with cash at all store ... just basically going to grocery stores, drug stores and such where credit/debit card usage is a huge thing. Then on top of that scare of cash and coins carrying C-19 caused a lot of people to stop using it as well as quite a few businesses going to cash free only as well. The supply loop is screwed up and coins are just “stuck” in certain places like jars on dressers, car cup holders, etc.

Sounds like a pretty good scam to improve their bottom line. How many folks will forget about their plastic "change"? Or just not want to deal with it.

Ran into this situation today at the dreaded WM , yes I know but I was in a hurry for oil filter for my truck, I was told by the associate that none of the self checkout stations accept cash, Because I had never heard on a national chance shortage, and yes I apologized for saying (Loudly) this is the stupidest thing I had heard of. I don’t use my credit card at WM! Sorry for the inconvenience, ma’am!

My wife posited that part of it could be all the people who haven't been able to go into a branch with their rolled/bulk coinage like she does about once a month. Credit Union has a coin machine where she dumps the month's change. She hasn't done that since the end of March.

I ran into this in Aiken, SC yesterday, first time coming across it.

We are delivered coin by Garda. This is real. We got 4 rolls of quarters to do a whole week when we need a minimum of 30 rolls. Same goes for dimes and the rest.

So the coinage is just coming home with folks and staying out of circulation? There's not a way for their to be a shortage, otherwise. The coins are there. People just gotta use them.

People are hoarding cash due to the times and using credit or debit instead.

Saw a sign at Sparky’s on the way back from the beach the other day said the same thing.

Rumor has it they want certain color of people want the faces of the presidents who had slaves removed from the coins.

Lowes in Fayetteville yesterday

When we lived in Italy coins bbn in smaller denominations were scarce. Cash registers had a container of "penny" candy. They would get close with coins and then toss in candy until it was done.

Home Depot today and not accepting cash at self check out.

Things there are a shortage of:
Coins, N95 mask, PPE, small deep freezers, toilet paper (although coming back in stock), Lysol or is generic, disinfectant wipes, bicycles, work out equipment, some prescription meds due to recall (some BP meds with HCTZ in it, Ranitidine/Zantac, some Metformin. Most of these have being made in China in common), some OTC meds such as Vitamin D and Zinc (once it was published that these might help fight Covid 19 they flew off the shelves), guns (my LGS owner said some firearms are on back order for weeks.), Ammo and canning supplies. I have a friend that cans and he said supply has dried up for him.
