Humor me, if you will, and please just go with me here.
What is the limit on "carrying", per se, an AR pistol in NC? All I know is that I can conceal it and can't put any vert grips or bipods on it.
Is it treated like a long gun for carrying in that we can't? Then what's the purpose of the pistol other than concealment or a truck gun?
You know what I mean?
Just making conversation.
I'm not saying I'm going to make it a point to purposely carry an AR pistol "just because." Im just curious. Seriously.

Since NC CHP states handgun only then my AR pistol is my truck pistol when home. I have a regular cab 1/2 ton truck, so anything behind the seat is concealed as I can reach for it. Would love to keep a 20" AR as my truck gun but state would stay its concealed behind the seat so 10.3" AR pistol it is. Believe me I know how to rock a 10.3" AR as I just shot our and replaced my barrel after 2.5 yrs on my issued AR. House gun is a 14.5" AR. Always have a pistol on body.

Once when I first got my Kentucky Concealed Deadly Weapons permit. I carried 6 handguns concealed into Wally World cause I could. Largest pistol was a Smith 657 6.5"
Classic Hunter N frame in a shoulder holster. Notice the title of Kentuckys concealed carry permit. Doesn't matter if .44 Mag pistol, STEN submachine gun or cast iron frying pan. Deadly force is deadly force as they look at it.

Issued select fire 10.3" with new barrel

My very similar AR pistol (no stock or happy switch). It will later get the T1 when I get home.

Now that's an old-school flare gun. Did you cut up the rubber matting to make the grips for it? Looks like a perfect match to your workbench surface.

Yes, pistol is a 12 ga smooth bore flare gun, Khyber pass made. Gun was all rusted up and action frozen when it came in so off with the grips and into the solvent tank for a year. TACP who had the grips left so in the process of making a set. Traced the grip on paper, copied to kydex and cut those panels out. Then used that kydex on some rubber matting (as on bench top), dapped some Gorilla glue to them and they are now pressed in the vise. Trigger is very hard to pull still but it does go off. Been shooting some S&B non lethal rubber ball ammo out of it. It just goes "pop".

I didn't know the no vert grip rule. What if it's an angled foregrip?
All depends on who you ask and what day of the week you ask them.

What I’ve seen in writing says AFGs are OK, VFGs are not. I know somebody posted on here sometime in the last several months that they were told there was no difference in A vs V, but I can’t remember if that was ATF or LEO.

On top of that, OAL has to be considered. If it’s <26”, adding the VFG creates an AOW. 26”+ and you simply have a firearm.

...and then you have to figure out how to measure OAL. For an SBR, it’s with the stock fully extended. But the lasted word from the ATF is it doesn’t work that way for an AR pistol. You don’t even measure it collapsed. You remove the brace and measure to the end of the buffer tube. Remember, muzzle devices don’t count unless they’re permanently attached.

Did the post state no difference as in they’re both allowed on a pistol (same as an AFG), or no difference as in they’re both not allowed on a pistol (same as a VFG)?

Not allowed. (99.44% sure that’s what it was) :D

If muzzle devices don't count towards oal, what happens when the hand guard is longer than the barrel sans devices?

You still measure to the muzzle, as the firearm would function without the hand guard.

If you had monolithic upper, then flip a coin. I’ve asked that question a couple times and gotten both (muzzle and end of rail) answers.

That sucks because I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to carry my AR pistol sometimes on my person (or all the time?)

What about it sucks?

he’s stating he uses his CHP to cover his concealed AR pistols since he can’t carry an AR rifle...

Because I want to carry my AR Pistol, i understand that they're covered as concealed, but some situations call for something bigger than a 9mm handgun, you know what i mean?

What’s stopping you from carrying one? Other than physically carrying/concealing it?

Right. He’s saying he carries an AR pistol (as a handgun) because it’s covered by his CHP. He’s not differentiating handgun vs pistol. He’s saying AR pistol is ok, where AR rifle is not.

Ok, it wasn't clear, I know no one is a lawyer

the way I read it was it has to be treated as a long gun for carrying, obviously I read that wrong

Remember some states do not consider an AR pistol to be covered under a CHP or what ever term they use for their permission slip. While I can’t cite the SC statute ... SC limits the scope of their CWP by limiting it to “concealable weapons” which they define by size of less than 12” in length ... so if you go to Murder Beach an AR Pistol is not covered under your permit.

Good thing I dont go anywhere but round here lol

Bipod on a pistol is fine, the Ruger 10/22 Charger is one example.

One thing to note, is if one is trying for a OAL over 26in, as to create a "Firearm" so that one could have a vert grip, but fall outside the definition of an AOW, the moment you add the vert grip to the pistol, it is NO LONGER a handgun. ( it can be reverted by removal of said component however)

So if your looking to run a large handgun as a truck gun, remember... OAL doesn't matter as long as you have it configured as a handgun. But be careful of the technicalities inherent to the way you may have it accessorized.

If one were so inclined, you could have, say, an SBA 3, or 4 brace equipped pistol lower mated to a 20in upper.... as long as it is either equipped with a standard handguard, or railed hanguard with an AFG, or even just a hand stop, its just a really, really long handgun.... and heck, a Bipod is even allowable on a handgun, as has been pointed out!

Just some things to consider.
