When you’ve got a migraine

Peppermint oil, on the temples and a bag of ice on each side of the neck. Those are the only things I've ever had to kill one of my migraines once started.

Its the only thing those snake oil peddlers sell that works.

Migraines suck. Hope she gets to feeling better.

Mine just needed the Big D.

Dog in this case.

My wife is dealing with one right now as well. She broke down and took a special pill and is finally laying down. She complains it makes her neck and head numb and upsets her stomach.

I complain because it gives her HORRIBLE gas.

Migraine meds do the same for me...numb the neck and head. It’s a weird, loopy sensation but better than the headache.

Starting to feel a little better. Thanks.

But, what about the gas?

Glad you're feeling better.

I had terrible migraines in my late 20's and early 30's. I couldn't even take a sip of water without immediately throwing up. Lights and noise were almost unbearable. I tried different treatments and doctors and nothing worked. Finally, one of my co-workers suggested seeing a chiropractor. He found that I had 3 vertebrae in my neck that were crushed together and pinching a nerve. It took about 10 visits before he got my neck to loosen up. After seeing him for about 8 weeks, no more migraines. Now, I crack my neck several times a day, and have not had a migraine in over 25 years. It might not work for everyone, but chiropractic adjustments worked for me.

I try to break her back every night. Does that count?

I am sooo lucky that 30 years ago I discovered that a Goody's Powder or Excedrin taken as soon as I see the visual aura will prevent my headaches. I still get the run-over-by-a-truck feeling, but no headache.

Prayers sent for wifey!

My wife used to get them quite frequently. Still has one now and again, but after identifying the main trigger she's able to avoid them.

Oh, the trigger?

No shit, stress brought on by her mother. She had a come-to-Jesus meeting with her mom.
Now, she cuts off phone calls with her mom and says she'll talk to her later if mom starts harping on something. Magic...

Cold, dark, quiet room is the only thing really that works well for me, I try to only take the meds as a last resort.

My wife has had them since law school. She was diagnosed with glaucoma about a year ago and was on a high dollar eye drop that stopped them all. Then she noticed a black line on her face and changed eye drops and they have come back and eye pressure was up again.

Her biggest trigger is stress after eye pain. The migraine medication causes a imbalance with your ears and eyes causing your stomach to do backflips. That's how our dr says it anyway. When they give a shot version that make her take a shot for the sickness it causes as well.

I won't attempt to make a joke about migraines. I used to suffer from them a lot. The only "complete cure" for mine was a shot of Demerol and get knocked out. Then I was prescribed with imtrex (spelling?).
It is a nasal inhaler that you hit when you felt one coming on. It would stop it before it got started. Truly a miracle. Really worked great especially when I was traveling a lot. Later in life I gradually quit having the bad migraines. Every now and then I will feel the blurred vision starting like used to happen at the beginning, but a few Motrin and it goes away. I'm so thankful. A migraine is a miserable think and I woud not wish one on my worst enemy.

They offered me some shots but I try to take as little medicine as I possibly can for everything. So when I feel on starting to come on I get to a nice dark quiet place as quickly as I can and try to sleep it off but I get terrible nausea with mine and that makes it just pure hell for me.

I get horrible ones with auras and whatnot.

Thankfully, ibuprofen knocks it out in like 20 minutes.
Then I’m just dumber than usual and exhausted for rest of day. And mild headache the next day.

I used to get them really bad in my early 20's. Light and sound sensitivity, severe nausea, etc. Always felt like my brain was bruised the next day.

Ditched my current girlfriend at the time and never got another one. It's funny but I'm absolutely serious. I suppose it was stress related?

Many years ago I used to get the migraines. I had the kind that would make me sick and throw up. The only thing that I could do was get in a dark room, lay very still, and try to sleep it off. I had sinus surgery in 1983 and haven't had a migraine since.

My wife gets them on occasion. With the really bad ones, I’ve had her take a Tylenol with codeine (stuff more rare than gold anymore) and it knocks them right out. I’ve seen her go from lying down in agony to cleaning the house in 30 minutes.

Fortunately I only get a migraine about once a year. I get plenty of headaches but those are usually manageable with Advil or Tylenol. I used to take Relpax because I got them more frequently but have not really needed it as I’ve gotten older...but man I was wishing I had one last night.

I finally broke down after decades of "blinders" and went to a headache specialist. He gave me Atenolol, which I took for maybe a week. I had to quit because it gave me "hallucinatory feelings of impending doom". (Picture the storm scenes from "Donnie Darko".) No more headaches after that, for whatever reason.

"But I'm feeling much better now."

Me too!! Two goody powders and a monster energy drink and I am back up and running.

My wife takes a monthly self injection that is a migraine preventative. Sort of like an EpiPen. It's expensive and a shot but it doesn't have the crazy side effects that the last medicine they had her on had. Absent the meds she has 2-3 a week.

My wife uses that pen as well. It helps.

@Chdamn's Wife my wife also got the Daith piercing in her ears as well. Says that helps too. She also gets Botox injection in her forehead area.

I bet that's Imitrex.

This.

I started having them when I was 12 and had to suffer till about 20 years ago. Like you, as soon I get a hint that one is coming- 2 Goody's Powder, noise canceling headphones, and a sleep mask.

Last week I got one and could not get ahead of it. Hot shower, compression wrap around head, Goody's.... nothing helping. Ended up taking 900 mg Gabapitian just to knock myself out till it past. Long 18 hrs.

100% that's it.
Makes my shoulders tighten up to the point of a tension headache, ironically. Does the same to my wife. Another well known migraine med, Maxalt was once offered to my wife in the form of those melt on your tongue films. Reading the label I saw it had aspartame (NutraSweet) as an ingredient, a known migraine trigger and one to which my wife was sensitive! We called the company to inform them.
